Chapter 8

Zara

My stomach growled. The hunger was telling on me. I sighed. Regretting why I sent back the food.

If I could still calculate correctly, it has been more than four hours since I had last done anything. Knowing this alpha he might have given the instructions for me to starve. There was nothing else to do than sitting and waiting until they decided to show Mercy. I kept having the same recurring nightmare and it made staying in this place more dangerous.

I heard footsteps approaching closer and there were groans and several curses. I waited until I could see who it was. The guard was dragging the other guy who was previously here. He had already strained a few more bruises. They threw him into the cell, he stayed in one position for a while. For a moment, I thought he was dead until he moved and coughed

"Where did they take you to?" There was an iron barricade that separated us, there was no way I could help him even if I wanted to.

"It is none of your fucking business." He snapped at me. I stayed on my own feeling a little sad. It was a good thing to have someone here to talk to. It helps me not to run insane for a while even when that was my last resort. I could tell how frustrated he was. I would be too if I was carried away just to face torture and more pain.

When is all of these going to end? I continued to ask myself. This was the time where I had wished for death but I had to pull through every form of pain that I was reviewing from the alpha.

"Are you hungry?" He asked out of the blue.

"I am but there is no way I can get food. We might as well starve to death here." I chuckled wistfully.

"Take. " I turned to his direction and he stretched two apples to me and kept one to himself. I hit into it before I had the chance to tell him thank you.

I was done with the fruit he had given me and I stared at him for a while. "Do you have another one from your stash?"

He stared for a while before smiling. "No, I was able to pick them from the tree which it had fallen from before they had me. That was the last one."

My shoulder fell in disappointment. I knew that he was only helping but I imagined if he had picked more which he couldn't. It was a miracle that he was able to sneak three red apples.

"I never asked you for your name."

"Zara. You?" I asked him.

"Harry." I nodded.

"Well nice to meet you Harry. It is a huge relief that you are not dead." He laughed. "I believe if we hang in here for a while, help will come." I saw him through the streak of light that came sneaking in. He smiled before he burst out laughing.

"Why the hell are you laughing?" I was embarrassed that he was kind of fun to me.

.

"I am sorry but if I remember vividly, you were the one filled with pessimism that no one was coming for you and now you are optimistic that you are going to get out of here. I am just surprised how the tables have turned."

"You better stop talking." He laughed some more, making me laugh as hard as I could. "Right now, I hope we have all we have. And even if we leave here with the good graces of the alpha, that would count as something."

He shrugged. "Tell me about your life in your pack."

I hesitated for a while because I wasn't one to speak about myself. Then, there was nothing else we would be doing here than trying to chat about our lives we had before now. "I had a beautiful life. I was adopted by this beautiful family in the Red moon pack. They took me…"

He coughed. "Did you say Red moon pack?"

"Yes, why?"

"I worked with the Alpha but as a spy. That was how I was captured. I am not from there through. I went off grid because I didn't want to be tied to any pack. I have a lot of enemies and if I am being traced to any pack or neighbourhood, they might be in danger." He paused recollecting. "I am sorry for interrupting. Go ahead with your story."

"It is okay. They took me in. They found me after my pack abandoned me. When I tried to find the pack, I realised that the whole pack had been wiped outta, so I stopped looking. My adoptive parents were the beta of the Red moon pack, so we worked close to the alpha. I went to school there, made friends until I fell in love with James."

"The Alpha's son." He finished the statement.

"Yeah. Then they were all killed, including my parents. Thinking about it, causes more grief for losing everything becomes worse. Do you know that James wanted a luxurious wedding but because I needed something simple we started our plans from the scratch. Come to think of it now, everytime we had a date for the wedding, something always came up that we had to push the dates further into the year. And this happened after we were finally ready to seal the knot."

I sighed. I didn't want to say what that meant but it seemed like it was a bad omen and on the day my fiancé died, I found my mate. Infact, my mate killed my family. I didn't know how I was going to live with that."

I could hear his breathing. "I'm sorry you had to go through that."

"It's fine. I'm here and it seems I am going to be stuck here all my life." A thought came to my head. "Is there a way we can run away?"

"Yes, there is only one way." He said.
