Chapter 9: Pranks and People: Introducing Lydia and Allison
With Peter Hale on a wild goose chase and the pack finally settling down, it was time to focus on the social side of high school. I wasn't just a werewolf consultant; I was also a student, and I needed to act like one. That meant making friends, going to classes, and, of course, pulling a few pranks.
The prank this time wasn't for a werewolf or a rage monster. It was for two very specific, very important people. Lydia Martin and Allison Argent.
I was sitting in the school library, a quiet, reassuring presence in a world of chaos, and I was watching them. The library was a cavernous, sprawling room, filled with the comforting scent of old paper and dust. Lydia, a blur of red hair and a sharp, witty mind, was a social chameleon, a queen of the school. Allison, a new girl in town, was a quiet, reserved presence, a girl who was a hunter in a family of hunters, a girl who was about to fall in love with a werewolf.
Okay, so I have a genius and a hunter on my hands. How do I get closer to them without revealing my secrets? With a prank, of course. A prank that's not about chaos and rubber chickens. A prank that's about connection and a little bit of weirdness. It's my brand. And my brand is about to make me a lot of friends. Or at least, a lot of confused friends.
The prank was simple. I had a few small, discreet drones I had bought online—a perk of being a rich kid with a tech addiction. I programmed them to fly around the school, playing a series of low-frequency, almost imperceptible sounds. The sounds were a mix of classical music, a high-pitched frequency that only dogs could hear, and a faint, almost ghostly whisper of a voice. The whispers were a mix of nonsense words and cryptic phrases, just enough to be noticeable, but not enough to be understood.
I watched from a distance as Lydia and Allison, sitting at a table in the library, started to get distracted. Lydia, a genius with a sharp mind, was the first to notice. She kept looking around, a furrowed brow on her face, as if she could hear something that no one else could. Allison, with her hunter senses, was the second. She kept looking around, her eyes scanning the room, as if she could sense a presence that no one else could.
I walked up to their table, a small, knowing smile on my face. "You two look a little... distracted," I said, a low, conspiratorial whisper. "Is it the sound of a phantom dog? The sound of a ghost singing a lullaby? Or maybe a unicorn with a rainbow coming out of its rear end?"
Lydia looked at me, a flicker of surprise in her eyes. "How did you know?" she asked, her voice a low, incredulous whisper. "I've been hearing this sound all day, but no one else can hear it. It's been driving me crazy. It's like a low hum, a weird frequency. It's illogical."
"It's a prank," I said, a half-smile on my face. "A prank to get a little closer to two very smart, very interesting people."
Lydia just stared at me for a moment, her face a mask of utter confusion. "You... you did this?"
"Yeah," I said, a little too casually. "I'm a prankster. It's a job. And I'm pretty good at it. It's just a little bit of harmless fun, a way to break the ice."
Allison, who had been silent up until now, finally spoke. "It's... it's a little strange," she said, her voice a quiet, reserved presence. "But it's also... kind of brilliant."
I just smiled. "Brilliant is my middle name. So, you want to get to know the guy who can make you hear ghosts? Or do you want to keep studying?"
They both smiled, a small, genuine smile that made my heart flutter. The prank had worked. I had gotten closer to them, and I had done it with a series of drones and a very, very good lie.
I had a long, detailed conversation with them, a conversation that was filled with witty banter, sarcasm, and a quiet, supportive friendship. I also used the opportunity to subtly encourage Allison's feelings for Scott. I told her that he was a good guy, a little clumsy, a little weird, but a good guy who would always have her back. I also told her that he was a guy who was just as lost and confused as she was.
The conversation was a success. Allison's eyes, a quiet, reserved presence up until now, were now filled with a flicker of hope and a touch of genuine affection.
The pack is forming. The bonds are strengthening. And I'm right in the middle of it. This is going to be a lot of fun. I'm a puppet master of emotions, a prankster with a purpose. Who knew a transmigrator with a system could be so good at being human? I'm not just a wild card anymore. I'm a core member. And I'm pretty good at it.
