Chapter 181
The Suzumebachi was launched like a torpedo, dragging a long tail of flames.
Even when it was reflected, the incredible recoil force directly shook Soi-Fon away.
High-temperature flames erupted fiercely behind her, exploding outward in violent waves.
The power of this Bankai was overwhelming; even the recoil alone was terrifyingly destructive.
Boom!
The battlefield fell silent in that instant.
The Suzumebachi Thunder Whip detonated above, blooming into a massive flower of fire that lit the sky like a blazing sun.
The silence across the battlefield lingered as eyes turned toward the explosion's center.
Even Tier Harribel, who had been intent on returning to her blade after seeing Sung-Sun and the others fall, turned her head in the direction of the blast.
"That... what is that thing?" Lilynette gasped, her eyes widening in shock.
Lilynette's small frame and youthful appearance contrasted with the hollow hole in her chest. She wore a white vest that parted sharply in the center like an open doorway. The cut covered only her chest, leaving the center exposed up to her sternum and her flat stomach bare, her figure so slight it was hard to tell front from back.
The immense recoil transformed into a shock wave, tearing apart the ground and sending debris flying in every direction.
Ūmaeda Marechiyo was thrown violently into a wall, the masonry collapsing as he struck.
Soi-Fon herself plummeted from the sky like a severed kite, her body wracked with the shock of her Bankai's force.
As she fell she forced her eyes open, straining to see through the blinding light of the detonation.
"Did it work?" she whispered to herself.
The glow of the explosion blinded her vision; she could not yet tell the outcome.
Her body screamed with pain as though her bones would shatter apart from the strain, but her resolve remained firm.
If the enemy could be eliminated, the cost was acceptable.
If she died here, it would still be the duty of the Onmitsukidō Commander.
Still, the faintest regret traced her thoughts. She had not spoken properly with Yoruichi-sama… not even seen her enough times before this battle.
Then unexpectedly, her mind turned to Yuta, the one always lingering by Yoruichi-sama's side.
That infuriating man. Where was he now?
Even as she thought it, she realized she was smiling faintly.
At that moment she felt her body fall into someone's arms.
The voice that followed carried an undeniable strength.
"It's alright."
The weight of the impact seemed to vanish.
Strong arms pulled her back as sparks of reiatsu rippled outward, neutralizing the raging shock waves.
Anchored in midair, Soi-Fon looked up in disbelief. The figure hovering over her was the very one she had just been thinking of.
"You... you're Yuta!"
"What, you didn't notice me?" Yuta asked.
"Who has the time to pay attention to you?" Soi-Fon turned her face away quickly, unwilling to meet his eyes directly.
"Hey, I was the one who caught you just now," Yuta replied firmly.
"Who... who needs your help? That recoil, I could have handled it."
Yuta smirked. "Right, right. If it weren't for our Captain Soi-Fon using up her strength with Bankai, then none of this would've been a problem for her, correct?"
"You... you're infuriating," she snapped, her cheeks burning with anger. She bit down on his hand sharply.
"Are you a cat now? Why are you biting people?"
"What do you care?"
Yuta glanced at the bite marks as they healed almost instantly before releasing her lightly.
"Leave Baraggan to me," he said, stepping forward without hesitation.
"Wait..." Soi-Fon reached out instinctively but caught only the edge of his clothes as he moved away. The fabric slipped through her fingers as he advanced toward the battlefield alone.
She gritted her teeth and whispered under her breath, "Don't die..."
...
The flames of the burning fortress flared in the distance.
In the skies above, Aizen Sōsuke opened his eyes.
"Since Yuta has entered the fight, we cannot delay any further."
The Garganta split open in the sky above the battlefield.
From its black depths stepped a figure-a young Arrancar with vacant eyes. Wonderweiss Margela.
He had been created by Aizen Sōsuke specifically to neutralize Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni.
Behind Wonderweiss emerged a massive, grotesque being. The creature's swollen body resembled a mound of pulsating flesh. Its enormous size alone rivaled a mountain, its features twisted into a single eye and gaping mouth. From its bulk extended two monstrous arms, each hand ending in a distorted face with a long pointed mask reminiscent of Gillian-class Menos.
The sheer fusion of countless Gillians had created this abomination.
It opened its mouth wide and exhaled, its breath blowing away the inferno consuming the fortress.
Ichimaru Gin let out a drawling remark.
"My, death is thick in the air already."
"It's fine," Aizen replied coolly. His eyes swept across the battlefield toward the injured vice-captains struggling below.
Kira Izuru, Hisagi Shūhei, Abarai Renji, Ikkaku Madarame, Ūmaeda Marechiyo-and others all raised their eyes toward the figure in the sky as Aizen's crushing reiatsu pressed down upon every soul.
This was to be the decisive battle.
"Long time no see, Aizen-kun," a voice rang out clearly.
The Visoreds stepped into view before him.
The one who spoke was Hirako Shinji.
When the group had learned of Aizen's presence in the Human World, they had resolved to confront him directly. There was no friendship left in this fight-only a shared enemy that bound them together.
The wind swept Shinji's hair as his familiar sharp grin cut across his face.
"We've all got a debt to settle with you."
Hirako Shinji, Sarugaki Hiyori, Muguruma Kensei, Yadomaru Lisa, and the others of the Visoreds stood arrayed before the traitor captain.
Gin glanced at them with his narrow eyes and spoke quietly.
"Oh, this is interesting. All these old faces return."
