Chapter 190
"Bankai-Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō!"
Komamura Sajin released his Bankai, and a massive armored figure wrapped in black ropes rose from the ground, towering over everything and casting its shadow across him. The giant form held a colossal Zanpakutō and bore two horns upon its head. It loomed behind Komamura like a guardian, yet also like a curse.
Komamura engaged Tōsen Kaname without hesitation. Their clash was swift and destructive. Tōsen's blade cut into Myō'ō's arm, and at the same moment, a wound split open on Komamura's own arm-the link between them was absolute. Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō's strength was immense, but its greatest weakness was unavoidable: every injury it suffered was mirrored on Komamura's body.
Even so, Komamura pressed forward, forcing Tōsen down. Under his command, Myō'ō's massive Zanpakutō smashed into Tōsen and sent him crashing to the ground. His body twisted unnaturally, his left arm crunching with the sound of breaking bones.
Yet Tōsen did not falter. He turned the broken limb, twisting it back unnervingly until the arm was whole again. Komamura's eyes widened.
"Super-speed regeneration… You truly have no intention of remaining a Shinigami."
Tōsen hovered in the air, his voice carrying bitterness and anger.
"You accuse me of having fallen. Then I ask you-those who enter the Gotei 13 seeking revenge, who then choose to live quietly, abandoning their purpose to serve the organization they once despised… Are these not also fallen? To me, that is a greater disgrace."
Komamura's chest tightened as the meaning in Tōsen's words hit him.
"Tōsen… Was your reason for becoming a Shinigami to seek revenge?"
Suppressing his fury, Tōsen answered coldly.
"Did you never question it? A man whose dearest friend was murdered joined the very institution tied to her death…"
Komamura lowered his gaze.
"...I thought it was for justice."
Tōsen's voice hardened, his mouth opening wide to reveal sharp, Hollow-like teeth.
"Yes-for justice! Forgiving the one who killed your closest friend may be called kindness, but failing to avenge her, pretending peace is acceptable… that is the greatest sin!"
Komamura looked directly at him, his tone steady despite the weight of his words.
"It seems I misunderstood you. Our beliefs will never align. For the sake of Soul Society, I will stop you here. Do not mistake me-I do not want this fight. To be truthful, after hearing your words, I wished I could forgive you."
Tōsen's laugh rang out, wild and unhinged.
"You forgive me? Komamura, since when did I ever need your forgiveness? If you wish to fight, then fight! Witness the power of my blade! Suzumushi Hyakushiki: Grillar Grillo!"
Inky-black reiatsu flooded outward from Tōsen, overwhelming and suffocating. His body twisted as the energy consumed him, reshaping him into a monstrous form. His body became insect-like and black, lined with two horns, his head grotesquely white, and translucent, insect wings spread from his back. With these eyes, now wide and inhuman, Tōsen gazed upon the world he could finally see for the first time.
"So this is sight… This is the sky… This is the world! And you, Komamura-you are even more repulsive than I imagined!"
Their battle resumed with renewed ferocity. Komamura's thoughts drifted as he fought-memories weighed heavy on him. In the past, his appearance had driven others away. Only two had offered him friendship. One was Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni, who had not only accepted him but had given him a place within the Gotei 13. The other had been Tōsen Kaname. Though blind, Tōsen had spoken with him, shown him kindness, and Komamura had cherished his friendship.
They had once stood together before the grave of Tōsen's beloved friend Kakyō. The stone there had been unremarkable, yet Tōsen's words had stayed with him.
"She lived for justice. She loved this world deeply and died in its name. I don't want her justice to vanish, so I will risk my life to inherit her legacy. That is why I became a Shinigami."
Now Komamura understood what had been hidden in those words. Tōsen had spoken of her love for the world-but never of his own. He realized now that Tōsen had always hated it.
Komamura clenched his fists, his resolve firm.
"Tōsen… I understood too late. You could never forgive this world. Still, I wanted to be your friend. If you grieved, I would shoulder it with you. If you strayed, I would rebuke you. If you erred, I would forgive you. And when you had nothing left, I would support you. I wished only to make you, who no longer loved the world, able to love it again."
"Kyōka Suigetsu-Juppō Seki!"
Tōsen unleashed his power. His reiatsu became sound waves that struck Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō with violent force. The armored giant's chest collapsed inward as cracks split across its form, the damage mirrored upon Komamura's own body. Blood spread across his chest as he fell into the rubble, the rocks beneath him warm in the sun.
His voice was ragged as he whispered,
"My apologies… Hisagi Shūhei, Iba Tetsuzaemon… and Tōsen… I cannot kill you."
As Tōsen prepared to deal the final blow, a blade pierced cleanly into his neck. The weapon was a Zanpakutō adorned with a chain-Kazeshini.
"You are no longer Captain Tōsen," a voice declared evenly. "If you truly could not see, you would have evaded this strike with ease."
"Sever him-Kazeshini."
In that instant, a vision stirred before Tōsen. A face took form, blurred and indistinct, though certain details stood clear: long black hair, smooth and flowing, and the outline of a woman's kimono.
"Who… is this person?" He faltered for a moment, his voice shaken. "Strange… I should not be able to see anything."
