Chapter 9 - The Rhythm of the Game

The quiet sound of Tristan's body clock woke him up before his alarm clock could even make a single beep. The world outside his window was still completely dark. It was the kind of deep black sky that you only see in the very early hours of the morning. The air coming through the small cracks in his window felt cold and a little bit wet. This was the silent, early morning time that he had started to love so much. At this hour, the whole world felt like it belonged only to him.

He slowly got out of his thin bed. His body did not feel heavy or tired. Instead, he felt very strong and completely ready to move. This good feeling was clear proof of all the hard work he was doing every single day. He looked at his invisible blue system screen. He still had a big running mission to finish. He needed to run fifty kilometers in one week. He had already done some of it, but he still had a long way to go. However, running did not scare him anymore. He did not want to stop. Running was now a normal habit for him. It was a daily morning rule that made his new, strange life feel real and grounded.

Tristan walked quietly into the small bathroom. He took a bucket of cold water and splashed it all over his face. The cold water made him feel completely awake. He quickly put on his gray running shorts and a simple black shirt. He tied his old running shoes tightly.

He walked carefully to the front door so he would not wake up his mother. He opened the heavy door and stepped outside. He was moving very quietly, like a ninja. But when he looked out at the street, he stopped. He heard a soft laugh coming from the dark road. Under the weak yellow light of the street lamp, he saw two familiar faces. It was Marco and Gab. It was so cold outside that little white clouds came out of their mouths when they breathed.

"What, you thought you were going to leave us behind?" Marco asked. A very big smile was on his face.

Gab just shook his head. He had a funny, joking smile on his lips. "We could not let our best player run all by himself in the dark. What kind of teammates would we be if we stayed in bed?"

Tristan felt a very warm and happy feeling grow inside his chest. He was really not alone anymore. He had a real team now. They were his team on the basketball court, and they were his team in real life, too.

"I really did not think you guys would be waiting here," Tristan said. He had a big, real smile on his face. "I thought you two were going to sleep until the sun came up."

"And miss the chance to see a running monster in real life?" Marco said. He sounded very proud of his friend. "No way, man. We are in this together now."

The three friends nodded at each other. They turned around and started their morning run. The narrow streets of Barangay Burol II were empty. It felt like their own private running track. This was their home, and they knew every turn and corner. Tristan ran with a very steady and strong step. His legs moved fast and smooth. His new Stamina score from the system was a solid 20. This high score changed everything. He could run for many miles, and his lungs did not burn. His legs did not feel like heavy rocks anymore.

Marco and Gab, on the other hand, were just starting out. They did not have a magical system helping them. After only a few kilometers of running, they were already breathing very loud. They were taking huge gulps of air. Their faces looked like they were in a lot of pain. They started to fall behind Tristan. Their fast running turned into a very slow, painful walk. Tristan was a good teammate, so he slowed down his own running to stay beside them.

"Dude," Marco said. He stopped running and leaned his body against a tall lamp post. He put his hands on his knees and breathed heavily. "Seriously, what kind of person are you? You do not even look a little bit tired. I have no breath left. I feel like I am going to fall asleep right here on the road."

Gab's face was very pale and covered in thick sweat. He nodded his head to agree with Marco. "He is a monster, man. We told you yesterday. He is not a normal human anymore."

Tristan just laughed. It was a quiet, happy sound. "It is just practice, guys. You will get better at it soon. You just have to keep doing it every day."

Tristan looked at his two best friends. He felt very proud of them, but he also felt a little bit sorry for their pain. They had actually woken up early to support him. They were trying very hard. That was the most important thing. This morning run was not just about getting stronger muscles anymore. It was about friendship. It was about building a strong team bond, taking one painful step at a time.

After they walked slowly for a few more minutes, they finally stopped completely. Their morning exercise was done. Marco and Gab were totally out of energy. Their bodies made tired sounds, and they groaned in pain.

"I have a really good idea," Tristan said. He had a funny, happy look in his eyes. "Why don't you guys come inside my house for breakfast? My mom just made a lot of garlic fried rice, sunny-side-up eggs, and red hotdogs."

When Marco and Gab heard the word "food," their tired faces suddenly looked very bright and awake.

"Are you serious right now?" Marco asked. His eyes were very wide. He looked surprised and very thankful. "That sounds like the best idea in the whole world."

"Yeah, man, your mom is the best cook ever," Gab added. His voice was full of real happiness.

The three boys walked slowly back to Tristan's small house. They were very tired, but they were also very happy. When they opened the front door, a wonderful smell hit their noses. It was the smell of hot, cooking hotdogs, fresh eggs, and garlic frying in a pan.

Tristan's mother, Linda, was standing in the kitchen. She looked very peaceful and focused as she moved the food around in the pan. She turned her head, and when she saw the three boys, a huge smile appeared on her face.

"Tristan! You are all here so early!" she said. Her voice was very warm, sweet, and welcoming. "Sit down at the table, boys. Breakfast is completely ready for you."

Linda put three large plates on the small wooden dining table. Each plate had a huge pile of garlic fried rice, two bright yellow eggs, and three red hotdogs. The three hungry boys sat down quickly. They started eating right away. They did not talk much because their mouths were full of delicious food. They just ate in happy silence. Their stomachs were getting full, and their hearts felt very light.

Linda stood near the kitchen counter. She just smiled while she watched them. She had a look of very quiet, deep pride on her face. She loved seeing her son with his good friends. For a long time, Tristan had just stayed in his bedroom, dreaming alone and feeling sad. Now, he was living his life out in the real world, and he was bringing his good friends along with him.

After the boys ate every single grain of rice on their plates, their stomachs were round and full. Their energy was back. Marco and Gab stood up to say goodbye.

"Thank you so much for the amazing food, Tita," Marco said. He used the respectful word for auntie. His voice was full of real thanks. "It was the best breakfast ever."

"Yeah, Tita, thank you! We will see you later at school, Tris," Gab added. He waved his hand as they walked out the front door. Their bodies were still sore from the run, but they were very happy.

Tristan took a quick shower to wash off the sweat. He put on his clean school uniform. His body felt perfectly balanced. He was a little bit tired from the running, but he also felt very awake and full of ready energy. He grabbed his bag and walked out. He met Marco and Gab at the corner of their street, just like they always did. They walked together to Dasmariñas National High School. While they walked, they talked about their homework and their big plans for the basketball tournament.

The morning classes went by very fast. Tristan's mind felt very clear. This new, sharp focus helped him understand his lessons easily. Their first class was Science. Their teacher was Ms. Budbud. She was a very strict teacher who wanted everyone to pay close attention. Today, she was teaching them about the heavy rules of Physics. She wrote long math equations and hard formulas on the green chalkboard. Before, Tristan would feel very confused by these numbers. But today, his brain worked fast. He understood the math easily.

After Science, they had their Filipino class. This was a very nice change. Instead of hard math numbers, they learned about the beautiful words in the Tagalog language. It felt quiet and a little bit like reading poetry. It was very different from Physics, and Tristan enjoyed the rest it gave his brain.

Next was their T.L.E. class, which stands for Technology and Livelihood Education. The three friends worked together on a small electronics project. They used wires and batteries. It was a very fun, hands-on class. They liked using their hands to build things instead of just reading books.

Finally, the best part of the day arrived. It was time for M.A.P.E.H. class. Today was Wednesday, so it was their day for Physical Education (P.E.). The class went outside to the school court. The teacher made them do many drills. They had to run in lines, jump high, and move left and right very fast. This was Tristan's time to shine. He showed his amazing skills to his friends and to all his classmates. When he ran, he looked like a fast blur. When he jumped, he went very high. He was totally natural. He was full of moving energy. He was not just a normal student hiding in the back anymore. He was a shining star on the court, and everyone could see his quiet, strong confidence.

When the P.E. class ended, the three friends walked to the school canteen to eat lunch. They were all very hungry again. Their bodies felt a good kind of tired. They bought their food and sat at a plastic table. They talked loudly about the P.E. class. They talked about their new basketball team, and they talked about the big intercolor league that was coming soon.

"You guys should have seen Tris during P.E.," Gab said. He had a giant smile on his face as he chewed his food. "He was an absolute monster out there. He ran circles around every single person in the class."

"I am telling you the truth," Marco added, pointing a finger at Gab. "He is a completely different person right now. He is much faster, he is much stronger, and he is not even a little bit tired after a whole morning of running and jumping."

Tristan just smiled at them. He felt a very quiet, warm happiness in his heart. He did not need to say proud words about himself. His fast running and high jumping showed everyone the truth.

The rest of the afternoon classes went quickly. They had Math, English, and History. Finally, the school bell rang. It was exactly 3:00 PM. The school day was over. Tristan, Marco, and Gab grabbed their bags. They rushed out of the school gates and walked quickly to the barangay basketball court.

When they got there, they saw that the rest of their team was already waiting. There were ten boys in total. They were a mixed group, but they all loved basketball very much. Kyle, the quiet boy who loved playing tough defense, was sitting on the ground. He was carefully pulling his legs to stretch his muscles. Felix, the tallest and biggest boy on the team, was standing near the basket. He was throwing the ball gently to make easy shots. The other new players on the team, Ian, Mark, John, Joseph, and Joshua were standing together in a circle. They were talking deeply about how to win games.

When Tristan walked onto the court, he felt a huge wave of pride hit him. But he also felt a very heavy, quiet feeling of duty. He was the point guard of this team. He was the leader on the floor. It was his job to tell them what to do. He had to be the one to start the practice the right way.

"Alright, guys!" Tristan called out loudly. His voice was very clear and full of belief. "Let's get this practice started right now."

All the boys stopped talking and walked to the middle of the basketball court. Ten boys stood in a circle, ready to work hard.

"First things first," Tristan said, looking at all their faces. "We have to stretch our bodies. We cannot play with cold muscles. We cannot risk anyone getting hurt before the big tournament."

They all sat down on the hard concrete floor. They started to bend and pull their bodies. They stretched their legs, their backs, and their shoulders. Kyle, who was very serious about not getting hurt, helped lead the stretching. He showed the others the exact right way to bend. He did not say much, but his careful help showed how much he cared about the team.

After they were all warm, loose, and completely ready to move, Tristan picked up a basketball. He pushed it hard against the floor. Bamp, bamp, bamp. The loud bouncing sound was a steady, happy rhythm that they all knew and loved.

"Alright, listen up," Tristan said. "Today, we are going to work entirely on our shooting ability. We will do a long series of shooting drills. We will practice our close jump shots, our fast layups, and our long three-pointers. We need to make our shooting form very sharp, and we need our shots to go in the basket every single time."

The team started the drills right away. Soon, the whole court was very loud. There was the sound of many basketballs bouncing fast. There was the beautiful swoosh sound of the net moving when a ball went in. The boys were talking, laughing, and cheering for each other.

Tristan moved around the court very fast. His hands were quick and completely controlled the ball. When he threw the ball to shoot, he felt very confident. His new system stats for Vertical jumping and arm Strength made everything easier. When he jumped to shoot, he went high in the air. His arms pushed the ball perfectly. His shots looked clean and crisp. Almost every time the ball left his hands, it went straight into the middle of the net.

Marco, the team's shooting guard, looked like a machine. He caught the ball and shot it without stopping. He stood far away behind the three-point line. His body moved in one smooth, beautiful motion. It was very fun to watch Marco shoot because he looked so natural doing it.

Felix, the big center, was practicing near the ring. He was very strong. He caught the ball and pushed his way close to the basket. He used his big body to shoot powerful layups and short, strong jump shots.

Ian, who was their other tall center, was also playing very well. He used his long arms to reach high above everyone else. His shots showed how naturally strong and skilled he was near the basket.

The other boys on the team were also showing their special skills. Mark was very fast. He practiced running down the court at top speed to score quick layups. John had a very nice shot from far away; he was very dangerous from the three-point line. Joseph was a smart player who could shoot from anywhere, close or far. Joshua was known for his tough defense, but today he proved he could also shoot the ball very well. He never gave up on a single play.

They stayed on the court for hours. They ran and shot the ball until they were covered in heavy sweat. They were very tired, but they did not want to stop. The sky above them slowly changed colors. It turned from bright blue to fiery orange, and then to a dark, beautiful purple as the sun went down. But the boys kept playing. They were a real team now. They were like a family, and their long basketball journey was just starting.

Finally, it was getting too dark to see the basketball hoop clearly.

"Alright, guys," Tristan said loudly. He was breathing heavily, but his voice was full of true, happy pride. "That is enough for today. You all did a really great job out there. We will meet back here tomorrow at the exact same time. Tomorrow, we will focus on our team defense."

All ten boys clapped their hands together loudly. It was a happy cheer of tired success. They gave each other high-fives. They smiled and said their goodbyes. Then, they walked away in different directions, going back down the dark streets of Dasmariñas to their homes. They were not just a group of random boys playing a game anymore. They were brothers holding the same dream.

Tristan walked home completely by himself in the dark. His legs were sore, and his body was deeply tired, but it was a good kind of tired. Inside his chest, he felt a massive, quiet sense of winning. This warm, happy feeling was very different from the sad, lonely, and frustrating dreams he used to have just a few weeks ago.

He finally had a real team that believed in him. He finally had a clear goal to reach. He had a big dream, and that dream was slowly coming true right in front of his eyes. As he walked under the small streetlights, feeling the cool evening wind on his face, he smiled. For the first time in his entire young life, Tristan felt totally sure that he was exactly where he was supposed to be in the world.
