Chapter 37 - Black Mambas vs White Sharks (3)

The long, harsh ring of the halftime buzzer echoed across the covered court of Barangay Burol II, cutting cleanly through the roaring noise of the crowd. The sharp sound signaled the end of two exhausting quarters of basketball.

For a few seconds, a heavy silence seemed to fill the gym as hundreds of spectators took a collective breath. The air inside the venue was thick, warm, and humid, filled with the rich smells of fried banana cue, sweet ice-cold melon juice, salty popcorn, and dusty concrete. Outside the open sides of the roofed building, the bright afternoon sun shone down on the busy streets of Dasmariñas, Cavite, but inside, the atmosphere felt like a high-pressure cooker.

The ten players of the Black Mambas slowly walked off the concrete floorboards, their black jerseys completely soaked in sweat. They made their way down a narrow concrete hallway behind the bleachers toward a small storage room that served as their temporary team room. Their steps were heavy with fatigue, and their chests rose and fell as they breathed in the cool air away from the court.

They held a narrow three-point lead over the White Sharks, but none of them were celebrating.

The scoreboard on the gym wall burned brightly in their minds:

BLACK MAMBAS: 29

WHITE SHARKS: 26

A three-point lead was better than trailing, but after watching the White Sharks unleash a terrifying full-court trapping defense in the final two minutes of the second quarter, that three-point lead felt as thin and fragile as a sheet of paper.

Inside the small storage room, the air was quiet except for the heavy breathing of tired high school players, the rustle of towels, and the sharp sound of athletic tape being ripped off wrists and ankles. Plastic water bottles were unsealed, and long gulps of cold water echoed through the small space.

Tristan Herrera sat down on a low wooden bench near the back wall. He leaned his back against the cool concrete, closed his eyes, and took a deep, controlled breath. His lungs felt like they were burning, and his legs felt heavy from running at high speed for most of the first half.

Tristan mentally opened his glowing system display interface to check his current condition:

Name: Tristan Herrera

Title: Floor General (In-Training)

Speed: 35

Agility: 30

Stamina: 52 / 100

Equipped Badges: Acrobat (Bronze)

Active Skills: Floor General (Level 1)

Current Mission: Mission 5 — Qualify for the Next Round (Win at least 2 games in the league stage or face System Deletion).

Tristan stared closely at his status numbers. During the ten-minute halftime rest, his stamina bar was slowly recharging, rising from 52 back up toward 75.

He knew that winning this specific game against the White Sharks was absolute life or death for his basketball journey. If they won today, their tournament record would rise to two wins and zero losses, officially securing their spot in the playoff knockout rounds and completing Mission 5.

If they failed and lost, his Basketball System would be deleted forever, taking away his dreams of ever becoming a elite point guard.

Furthermore, sitting high up on the concrete bleachers during the entire first half was Coach Gutierrez, the legendary head coach of Dasmariñas National High School. The coach sat with his black clipboard, watching every pass, screen, and tactical decision Tristan made on the court.

Tristan also remembered his promise to Christine. They had agreed to meet for a Sunday afternoon study group near the Dasmariñas town library to prepare for their fourth periodical examinations coming up in March. If Tristan wanted to pass his classes and earn an invitation to the official high school varsity tryouts, he needed to excel both on the basketball court and in the classroom.

Tristan opened his eyes, wiping sweat from his neck with a clean white towel. He looked around at his teammates. Marco was sitting with his head down, staring at his red basketball sneakers with a tense jaw. Gab was sitting on a folded chair, rubbing a red bruise on his ribs from colliding with the Sharks' heavy center. Mark was tapping his foot nervously against the floorboards, clearly frustrated by the turnovers he had committed against the Sharks' late pressure.

Tristan let the silence linger for a minute, giving everyone time to calm their racing thoughts. Then, keeping his voice quiet, steady, and clear, Tristan spoke up.

"Halftime, guys," Tristan said calmly, attracting the attention of all nine players. "No yelling. No speeches. We just talk like smart players. What happened out there during those last three minutes of the second quarter?"

For a few seconds, nobody said anything. The only sound was the distant noise of the crowd outside.

Then Marco lifted his head, his voice tight with frustration. "They suffocated us, Tris. When Mark drove or when I tried to cut, it felt like four blue jerseys were instantly closing in on us. It wasn't just my direct defender; it was their whole team shifting together. I couldn't even see the rim on that drive."

Mark leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees. The playful, casual streetball grin he usually wore was completely gone, replaced by a sharp, focused expression.

"It's not a normal zone defense or a basic man-to-man coverage," Mark explained, analyzing what he had experienced on the floor. "It's a moving trap. They aren't watching our bodies; they're watching the ball in the air and watching our eyes. That steal Cedrick got off my pass? His guy wasn't even looking at me. He read my eyes before I even moved my hands and jumped the lane."

Gab let out a deep breath, touching his side. "And they are playing extremely physical down low near the paint. The referees are letting them bump us off our paths. Every time I set an off-ball screen, their center, number forty-four, hits me with a heavy hip or an elbow. They're trying to wear us down and force us to quit."

Tristan listened carefully, nodding his head to show he agreed with every word. They were seeing the floor correctly.

"You are all completely right," Tristan confirmed, his voice firm and reassuring. "The White Sharks adjusted their strategy. They realized that playing a slow half-court defense wasn't working against us, so they turned their defense into an aggressive attack. They are using their physical strength to make us panic, force bad passes, and drain our energy."

Felix looked up from his seat. "So how do we break it in the third quarter, Tris? Their double-teams feel like a solid wall."

Tristan stood up from the bench and walked over to a small white coaching board hanging on the wall. He grabbed a black dry-erase marker and uncapped it with a quiet click.

"Their greatest strength right now is their anticipation," Tristan said, a new spark of confidence lighting up his eyes. "They jump into passing lanes because they think they know where we are going to throw the ball. So, we are going to use their own anticipation against them. We will give them something obvious to react to something that looks like a threat, but is actually a trick. We will make their smartest defensive instinct their biggest mistake."

Tristan began drawing clear circles, arrows, and lines on the whiteboard. The entire team leaned in close, watching every mark he made with total focus.

"We are going to run a brand-new set play to open the third quarter," Tristan announced, writing the title at the top of the board. "We are calling this play Mamba's Fury."

The name echoed through the small room, bringing a feeling of strength to the group.

"The key to this play isn't just one player's individual skill," Tristan explained step-by-step using simple words. "It is all about exact timing and team chemistry. Every single movement must happen like a chain reaction."

Tristan pointed the marker at the guard position at the top of the key.

"Mark, you are starting at point guard again for this first possession," Tristan said, looking at Mark. "You are going to initiate the play. But this isn't a normal drive where you look to pass early. I want you to explode toward the right side of the painted key at full speed, looking like you are going to jump up for a hard layup. You are the bait. You have to sell the drive so completely that their interior defenders have no choice but to drop down and collapse on you."

Mark smiled sharply, nodding his head. "I'll make them think I'm going all the way to the rim."

Tristan then moved the marker to the power forward position. "Gab, the second Mark makes his hard move, you are not rolling to the hoop. Instead, you are going to sprint up and set a heavy, solid back-screen on Marco's defender near the wing. A legal, rock-solid screen."

"Got it," Gab grunted, clenching his fist. "I'll clear a path for Marco."

Tristan pointed to the center position. "Felix, you flash up to the free-throw circle with your hands ready. You pull their heavy center out of the paint, creating space inside and acting as a quick safety pass if Mark gets stuck."

Finally, Tristan drew a clear circle at the right corner of the three-point line.

"Marco," Tristan said, turning to their shooting guard. "This play ends with you. You have to read Gab's screen. The moment you feel his screen hit your defender, do not cut inside toward the basket. Sprint out to the deep right corner behind the three-point arc. Set your feet before the ball even leaves Mark's hands. Trust that the pass will arrive."

Marco stared at the drawn lines on the board, his eyes burning with intense fire. "I flare out to the corner, set my feet, and shoot. I'm ready."

"What about you, Tris?" Kyle asked from the bench.

"I am re-entering the game at small forward in place of Kyle," Tristan answered, turning to Kyle with an appreciative nod for his hard work in the first half. "I will be running down the left side, ready to crash the weak-side glass for an offensive rebound if Marco misses. Every single person has a job. Every movement is connected. The White Sharks think they have us figured out. We are about to prove them wrong."

As Tristan finished explaining the play, a sudden system prompt flashed across his vision:

Tactical Synergy Unlocked: Mamba's Fury (Team Pass Accuracy +15%, Screen Effectiveness +10% during execution).

Tristan smiled internally. The Basketball System recognized the intelligence of their strategy!

TRRRRIIILLLL!

The sharp sound of the referee's whistle blew in the main gym, signaling that halftime was officially over.

"Alright, Mambas!" Tristan called out, holding his right hand out into the middle of the room. "Let me hear it!"

All ten players placed their hands together in a tight, strong stack.

"ONE! TWO! THREE! MAMBAS!" they shouted in unison, their voices echoing off the concrete walls of the storage room.

They walked out of the narrow hallway and stepped back onto the bright floorboards of the Barangay Burol II covered court.

The loud roar of the crowd washed over them like a wave of heat. On the bleachers, local fans were clapping, shouting, and cheering for both teams. High up in the middle row, Coach Gutierrez watched attentively, taking his seat with his black clipboard ready on his knees.

The five Black Mambas players took their places on the floor: Mark at point guard, Marco at shooting guard, Tristan at small forward, Gab at power forward, and Felix at center.

Across from them, the White Sharks lined up in their blue-and-white uniforms. Cedrick Estrella stood near the wing, looking confident and relaxed after leading his team's second-quarter comeback.

The referee walked to the sideline, held the orange basketball, and handed it to Mark to begin the third quarter.

Mark caught the ball, took a deep breath, and waited for the referee's whistle.

TRRRRIIILLLL!

The whistle blew! The third quarter was underway!

Mark bounced the ball slowly past the half-court line, keeping his dribble low and calm. The White Sharks' point guard picked him up closely, shifting his stance to cut off the left side.

Suddenly, without any warning, Mark exploded!

Activating his raw streetball speed, Mark dropped his shoulders and drove down the right side of the painted key with terrifying force! He sprinted into the paint, rising up on his toes as if he was going straight for a contested layup!

Just as Tristan had planned, the White Sharks' defense took the bait!

Their heavy center #44 and their wing defender both abandoned their assignments, collapsing inward into the painted key to form a wall of blue jerseys to block Mark's path to the rim!

At that exact millisecond, Gab executed his assignment to perfection!

Gab sprinted across the wing and set a heavy, rock-solid back-screen on Marco's defender, jersey number twelve!

BOOM!

Number twelve ran straight into Gab's chest, completely stuck in place!

With his defender trapped behind Gab's screen, Marco flared out quickly to the right corner, setting his feet perfectly behind the white three-point line. His hands were open and ready in his shooting pocket.

Inside the crowded paint, surrounded by three tall defenders, Mark jumped high into the air!

With two defenders raising their broad arms to block his shot, Mark didn't even look toward the rim. Utilizing the boosted accuracy from the Mamba's Fury tactical synergy, Mark whipped a breathtaking, no-look laser pass right past the ear of the White Sharks' center!

ZIP!

The ball flew cleanly through the crowded lane, spinning fast through the air, and landed right into Marco's waiting hands in the right corner!

The entire gymnasium seemed to hold its breath!

Marco didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. Catching the pass in rhythm, he rose smoothly into the air with textbook form, flicking his wrist as he launched the jump shot high above the court!

The orange basketball arced high through the warm air of the gym, spinning backward in a perfect, graceful flight path.

SWISH!

The cotton net snapped sharply as the ball fell straight through the middle of the hoop!

"THREE-POINTER! NUMBER EIGHT, MARCO!" the court announcer screamed into his microphone, his voice echoing through the loud speakers!

32-26, Black Mambas!

"YES!" Marco shouted, roaring with joy as he pointed both index fingers directly at Mark while running back on defense!

The Black Mambas bench exploded in wild cheers! John, Joshua, Ian, and Joseph jumped out of their folding chairs, waving their white towels in the air! The local fans on the bleachers stood up, clapping and stomping their feet on the concrete stands!

"INCREDIBLE PLAYWRITING BY THE BLACK MAMBAS!" the announcer added. "A TEXTBOOK EXECUTION TO START THE THIRD QUARTER!"

The White Sharks were noticeably stunned by the sudden, flawless play. Their point guard received the inbound pass quickly, his face displaying visible shock. Wanting to answer immediately and reclaim the lost momentum, the Sharks' guard rushed up the floor and attempted to throw a high, fast skip pass over the defense to Cedrick Estrella on the left wing.

However, the pass was rushed, thrown slightly too high and off-target.

Gab, whose defensive instincts were fully locked in, read the guard's eyes instantly! Gab exploded upward off the floorboards, reaching his long arm high into the air!

SMACK!

Gab snagged the high pass right out of mid-air with both hands!

"STEAL BY GAB!" the announcer yelled!

Gab landed on the floor with the ball. Without taking a single dribble, Gab turned his body around and launched a long, full-court chest pass down the open floor, throwing it like a quarterback throwing a football!

Tristan had already released down the court the exact millisecond Gab touched the ball!

Using his upgraded Speed 35, Tristan sprinted down the left sideline like a sprinter on a track, leaving his defender three steps behind!

The long pass from Gab led Tristan perfectly into stride near the free-throw line. Tristan caught the flying basketball cleanly without slowing down!

Only one White Sharks defender was sprinting back—Cedrick Estrella, who was chasing him down from behind with incredible speed!

Tristan took one powerful plant step with his right foot near the right side of the key. Feeling Cedrick closing in fast on his right hip to attempt a block, Tristan activated his equipped badge:

Badge Triggered: Acrobat (Bronze) — Increases body control and layup success during mid-air contact.

Tristan gathered the ball with both hands, leaped high into the air, and shifted his body mid-flight to shield the basketball with his left shoulder!

Cedrick jumped right beside him, reaching out his long arm, but Tristan smoothly brought the ball under Cedrick's outstretched hand, gliding past the defender in mid-air. With incredible body control, Tristan laid the orange leather ball softly off the top corner of the white glass backboard!

The basketball hit the glass, bounced gently off the inner metal ring, and dropped cleanly through the net!

SWISH!

34-26, Black Mambas!

"AND THE FAST BREAK FINISH BY TRISTAN HERRERA!" the court announcer roared into the microphone! "AN 8-POINT LEAD FOR THE BLACK MAMBAS!"

TRRRRIIILLLL!

The White Sharks' head coach immediately slammed his clipboard onto his chair, raised both hands toward the scorer's table, and shouted for an emergency timeout!

In less than forty-five seconds of play in the third quarter, the Black Mambas had transformed a scary three-point game into a dominant eight-point lead!

The crowd in the Barangay Burol II gym went completely wild! The noise was deafening as supporters chanted the team's name!

Tristan landed on the concrete floorboards, turned around, and let out a triumphant shout, flexing his arms as his teammates swarmed him! Gab, Marco, Mark, and Felix ran over, jumping together and slapping Tristan's back with huge smiles on their faces!

"THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL, TRIS!" Felix yelled above the loud noise of the crowd.

"GREAT STEAL AND PASS, GAB!" Tristan shouted back, high-fiving Gab with a heavy smack.

As both teams walked toward their respective benches for the White Sharks' timeout, Tristan glanced up toward the middle row of the concrete bleachers.

Coach Gutierrez was standing near his seat, looking down at Tristan with a rare, genuine smile on his face. The veteran high school coach nodded his head three times in clear approval before jotting down a long note on his black clipboard.

Tristan took a deep breath of the warm gym air, feeling a surge of pure joy and confidence flow through his body.

Their strategy had worked perfectly, his Basketball System was safe, and the momentum was completely in their hands. They were no longer just holding on against a powerhouse team, they were dominating the floorboards of Dasmariñas.

The second half was far from over, but as Tristan grabbed his water bottle and sat down with his brothers, he knew one thing for certain: the Black Mambas were ready for whatever battle came next.
