Ralts' body dissolved into countless shimmering motes of white light.
They drifted through the cold prison cell like spring blossoms caught on the wind, before slowly fading into the darkness.
Kael sat numbly on the floor, his palm outstretched. A faint glow lingered there, the last trace of Ralts' sacrifice.
He understood what had happened Ralts had given its life to save him.
But… why?
From their first meeting to now, barely a day had passed. Less than twenty-four hours. In his old human life, that would scarcely have been enough time to even call someone a friend.
Yet in this world, the small, fragile Ralts had chosen to spend the last of its life to protect him.
The thought left Kael shaken.
His chest tightened. By logic, he should have felt deeply moved. Anyone would be grateful if another laid down their life for them.
But the emotion in his heart wasn't simple gratitude it was strange, difficult to name. Confusion. Unease.
It felt like a neighbor he'd only met once suddenly leaving him their entire inheritance. A gift far too heavy for such a brief bond.
What Kael didn't realize was this: to Ralts, he was everything. He had been the first Pokémon it had ever truly met, the only one to enter its lonely mind. That simple exchange had been enough for the sensitive, empty heart of Ralts to cling to him as a partner.
And once it knew its life would not last much longer, the choice had been inevitable. Giving its last spark to the one it treasured most.
So, what seemed unthinkable to Kael was, for Ralts, the only ending it could accept.
The last motes of white light flickered out, swallowed by the shadows of the cell.
Kael folded his arms, shut his eyes, and sat cross-legged on the floor.
He reflected.
Ralts' death ignited something in him. A spark, a fuse catching flame.
Since awakening in this world, he had grown reckless. Ever since discovering his system, realizing that death only meant wasting a few items before waking up again in the cycle, life had stopped feeling real.
He had acted like this world was nothing more than a game. Everyone he met was a human or Pokémon-like NPC. His actions, just another way to complete quests.
But he had been wrong.
Every choice mattered. Every step could change lives.
"Maybe… I need to take this seriously. All of it."
Exhaling deeply, Kael felt a weight lift from his chest. His gaze sharpened, no longer scattered and casual, but carrying determination.
He clenched his fists. His arm bulged with power, muscles swelling, sending a gust of air swirling around the cell. Dust whirled up in small cyclones and drifted through the bars.
The darkness lifted.
Ralts' gift had done more than free him from the Blood-Eye's curse it had calmed the chaos within. The three forces inside him, once tearing each other apart, now coiled together like strands of rope. Not truly fused, but existing in a fragile balance.
Fighting energy and Ghost energy were natural opposites. To combine them was impossible.
But coexistence? That, perhaps, was possible.
Kael studied his altered form.
His eyes, once bright orange, now glowed a dark crimson, tinted with a faint malice from the Blood-Eye's influence. But with that came sharper vision, heightened reflexes, and the ability to see clearly even in pitch black.
His skin had shifted too. Machop's natural stone-gray tone had dulled, darkened into a murky gray, as though shadowed by storm clouds.
Even his muscles felt denser, more compressed. His body hadn't grown bulkier, but leaner, built for explosive force like a predator ready to strike.
He knew these changes were only the beginning.
"…Wait."
He frowned. Something about his last punch had felt different. Stronger.
Opening the system, Kael read the panel:
[Species: Machop
Level: 8 (↑ from 5)
Ability: Steadfast
Moves: Low Kick, Leer, Focus Energy, Confuse Ray, Revenge, Grudge
Evaluation: An unusual Machop. Its body shows signs of unstable transformation.]
"…Level 8?"
His eyes widened. Before the last surgery, he had been Level 5. Now, he was three levels higher.
Flipping open the system log, he saw:
+1 EXP
+318 EXP
+1 EXP
+1 EXP
A massive surge of experience, appearing out of nowhere.
Kael frowned, thinking hard. Both times it had happened after he awoke from surgery.
Could it be… the experiments themselves were feeding him power? Altering his body, and in return, granting him huge amounts of experience?
His suspicion grew stronger the more he considered it.
"Yes. That has to be it!"
Just as he was about to close the menu, his gaze caught on something new.
"Grudge?"
Among his normal Fighting-type moves was a new one a Ghost-type skill he had never seen before.
The shadows of Ralts' sacrifice. The taint of the Blood-Eye. And now, his path was diverging from that of an ordinary Machop.
