The days blurred into a haze of numbness and unexpected stabs of pain.

I couldn't go back to that house.

I ended up at Dad's place, crashing there with my stepmother while we "prepared" for the burial.

Prepared. What a joke. How do you prepare for burying the one person who'd held your world together?

The house smelled the same—faint lemon cleaner mixed with Dad's old aftershave, clinging to the air like it refused to let go.

Every creak of the floorboards, every shadow in the corner, brought him back: Dad in his armchair, chuckling at some dumb TV rerun, or calling me for dinner with that gravelly "Kid, you eating or starving yourself again?"

The burial was quick, respectful and contained, the way Dad would've wanted it if he'd ever talked about this crap.

Just the essentials: a simple ceremony at the crematorium.
