Chapter 1 - System

With the sound of brakes and a loud crash, a bus overturned on the side of the road. The massive inertia threw Asmon toward the roof, but the seatbelt yanked him back into his seat. Then, the tremendous impact knocked him unconscious.

"This injured person is waking up!"

"Don't move! We're taking you to the hospital!"

After an unknown period of unconsciousness, Asmon heard a man's voice. He tried hard to open his eyes but failed.

"So lucky. Out of 45 people on the bus, he's the only one with almost no external injuries." Asmon heard another voice marveling at his good fortune.

He tried opening his eyes again, and this time, he saw blurry images. Sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, falling on his face. His head was facing the interior of the vehicle, and beside him sat someone in a white coat.

"A doctor? Then this must be an ambulance. Guess I'm not dying." Asmon let out a long sigh and tilted his head slightly.

His blurred vision gradually cleared, and the moment he saw the doctor clearly, he froze in shock. A line of text appeared before his eyes.

"What the hell is this?" The previously dazed Asmon instantly snapped awake and struggled a few times, but since injured patients were strapped to the stretcher before being loaded into the ambulance, he couldn't sit up.

"Don't move. Even though you seem fine, you still need to be examined before we can conclude anything." The doctor, assuming Asmon was trying to sit up, quickly stopped him.

"Alright, but I don't feel nauseous or dizzy, and I still remember the moment of the crash. I probably don't have a concussion." Asmon's father, Jason, was a doctor, and growing up around him had given Asmon some basic medical knowledge.

"You know quite a bit, kid, but we have to be responsible for the injured. Just hang in there a little longer." The doctor who had earlier marveled at Asmon's luck spoke up. He was sitting on the other side of the ambulance.

Asmon turned his head to look at the other doctor, and a similar interface appeared, though the stats were slightly different. He also noticed that the stretcher on the other side was empty.

"This feels like an RPG character stat screen."

[Greetings, carbon-based lifeform. It is an honor to coexist with you.]

Asmon was startled but quickly calmed down, attempting to communicate with this thing that seemed to have parasitized his brain. "Who are you?"

[A silicon-based lifeform from another universe, but our civilization has already perished. I drifted here.]

By the time they reached the hospital, Asmon had mostly figured out the situation with this "lifeform."

The system was a remnant of a silicon-based civilization from a parallel universe. That civilization had ultimately perished due to reproductive failure. This thing was a unit left behind by the civilization, possessing powerful learning capabilities but lacking complete consciousness or life characteristics.

Unable to contain his curiosity, Asmon dug deeper.

"Then I'll call you 'System.' When did you come to Earth? Why did you attach to me?"

[This system arrived on Earth shortly before the Industrial Revolution. Our physical compatibility is extremely high. In fact, I must attach to a living being to develop consciousness. Otherwise, I can only function based on preset logic.]

"So you've never attached to anyone else before?"

[If by 'person' you mean carbon-based lifeforms, then no. In the distant past, we were created as attachments to silicon-based lifeforms.]

Looking at the doctor beside him, Asmon suddenly grew concerned about the upcoming examinations.

"Can the hospital detect your presence?"

[As long as we are not communicating, they cannot.]

Asmon sighed in relief. At least he wouldn't become a subject of intense research—though the idea of being dissected was a joke, if this thing were discovered, constant surveillance would be unavoidable.

Just as he was about to continue talking to the System, the doctor beside him seemed to want to distract him and started a conversation while filling out the medical form.

"What's your name?"

"Asmon."

"Jason's son?" The two doctors were momentarily stunned, and Asmon was also surprised. It seemed they were his father's colleagues.

"My father is Jason, a doctor at Second People's Hospital."

Asmon noticed the other doctor making a call, likely to inform his father. He should have thought of it himself, but the System's appearance had been too overwhelming.

"I'm Preston, and he's Linn. We joined the hospital at the same time as your father, but we ended up in surgery and emergency medicine." Asmon's father worked in dermatology, a different department, which explained why Asmon didn't recognize them.

He summoned their stats again, and sure enough, the *** parts were now replaced with their names.

The doctor named Linn put the phone on speaker so Asmon could reassure his father. It turned out Jason had been working when news of the accident came in. Learning his son was on the bus, he had been frantic with worry but couldn't leave his department, so he asked some acquaintances to keep him updated.

Jason broke down in tears of relief, and Asmon told him to inform his mother, Grace, as well. Linn then hung up.

Meanwhile, Preston and Linn began discussing the accident, while Asmon focused on studying the System.

"What do these values mean?" Asmon wasn't too surprised by his lopsided stats.

[The average human's stats are 10. Your energy and focus are exceptional, but your body is weak. I recommend more exercise or physical enhancement. You can directly use attribute points to boost stats up to 20. Further enhancements require meeting additional conditions.]

Asmon pulled up the System's stats panel.

[System Level Lv0, Low Energy, Pending Activation

Attribute Points: 5

Fortune Value: 100

System Funds: $600,727.70, +$0.01/sec]

At this point, Asmon could no longer stay calm.

"What's with these funds? And what's Fortune Value?"

[The System has acquired nearly infinite resources over its long existence, including money, which can be directly transferred to your account as overseas deposits. However, the System's current energy consumption is too high, its functions are incomplete, and funds must be released gradually. Fortune Value can be exchanged for various things. I recommend browsing this part yourself.]

Asmon's hands trembled slightly. Even if the growth rate stayed the same, he had instantly surpassed 90% of the population. At the current rate, he earned $8,64 per day, equivalent to nearly $26,000 per month. Fortune Value was like in-game currency, exchangeable for money at a 1:10,000 ratio.

However, unlike game currency, Fortune Value could be exchanged for money, but money couldn't buy Fortune Value.

"How do I level up and unlock other functions?" Asmon noticed the System was currently Level 0.

[The System detects the host's emotions and inner desires to issue tasks. When the host's emotions are released, they receive money and Fortune Value. When particularly intense emotional fluctuations occur or the System identifies a critical timeline event, level-up tasks will appear.]

By the time he was wheeled into the hospital, Asmon was in a daze—not from a concussion but from the overwhelming shock of his sudden good fortune. He even pinched himself a few times to make sure he wasn't dreaming, and each time, it hurt.

The examinations lasted until the next evening. The hospital director repeatedly marveled at Asmon's miraculous lack of injuries, while his parents, now calmer, prepared to take him home.

Staying a few more days in the hospital wouldn't have been a problem, but that night was one of the most important moments of Asmon's life—the release of his High School Exam results.
