Chapter 31 - The flight of faith

After the interview, Luna began setting her new life in motion. She contacted a property manager in New York to arrange a flat—something simple, modern, and filled with quiet dignity. Until the renovations and décor were finished, she would stay in a hotel. Everything was falling into place… or so she thought. Luna Returned to Spain for settlement

Nick, unaware that Alex was the CEO of Moon Judicial, tried to be strong for her. He clasped her hands, voice steady though his heart was heavy.

"Luna, don't worry about your mother. I'll take care of her—the medicines, the surgery, the hospital bills, everything. I'll even visit you twice a month. Twice! So stop worrying, and focus on your career."

Luna gave him a faint smile but said nothing.

Later, outside, she directed movers as they carried her new furniture. Nick stood by, watching her organize every tiny detail with her usual sharpness. That's when the truth hit him—he saw Alex's name etched on documents, on the lips of employees. Alex was the director. The CEO.

His chest tightened. Not out of jealousy—but fear. Fear of Luna breaking all over again. He pulled her aside, voice trembling.

"Luna… do you even know Alex is here?"

She turned to him calmly, eyes cool but heavy with unspoken pain.

"I know, Nick. I know everything. But this job—it's bigger than me. Bigger than Alex. It's for my mother… for us. You're my best friend. We've built this far together. And we will continue."

Nick bit back his words. His only reply was a quiet plea:

"Fine. But please… don't let him break your heart again."

At the airport, Luna's mother surprised her—not with sharp taunts, but with something far more piercing: a quiet hug and a simple "Goodbye." No smile, no bitterness. Just silence.

Nick was the one who walked her to the gate. Before she could board, he suddenly pulled her close and kissed her forehead. Warm. Steady. Too steady. Luna froze, shocked, flustered—but didn't push him away. She whispered a small, trembling "Goodbye," and left.

On the plane, the universe decided to test her strength.

Her seatmate was an old, overweight man with greasy hands and eyes that lingered too long. At first, Luna ignored it. But when his hand crept toward her thigh, she stood and slapped him so hard the sound cracked like thunder across the cabin.

Gasps filled the air. His wife, seated just behind, stood in outrage. "Why did you slap my husband?"

Luna's voice cut like a blade.

"Because he was harassing me. Because he's a cheater. And I hate cheaters. I never forgive them—not in my life, not ever."

The woman's fury shifted into shock. She turned and slapped her husband even harder than Luna had. Laughter, whispers, and pity rippled through the passengers.

Luna shifted seats to 11A, her dignity intact, her heart raging with memories of Alex—the man she once accused of being a cheater.

Hours later, the plane touched down.

To her surprise, her arrival was met not just by managers—but by Alex himself. He stood tall, flanked by two of his trusted executives: a man and a woman, both married.

Luna's heart clenched at the sight of the woman. A shadow of jealousy flickered. Is she… the one Alex replaced me with? She said nothing, only greeted coldly.

It wasn't until their ride to the hotel, during small talk, that Luna learned the truth: the man and woman were husband and wife. Relief spread across her face in a silent Oh thank God moment, though she quickly masked it, pretending she hadn't cared in the first place.

The car pulled up to her hotel—only, it wasn't hers anymore.

Alex had quietly bought the entire building the night before. The same hotel she planned to live in while waiting for her flat. The same hotel where he now ensured every corridor, every elevator ride, every quiet corner could lead her back to him.

But just as the night promised romance, something brutal, something dark… was waiting.
