Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Do Zombies Still Sell Soy Sauce?

Just as Bai Wen was about to descend the stairs, he suddenly realized something. He immediately pulled out a grenade, removed the safety pin, and slid it into the door gap. If the door was pushed open, the grenade would explode instantly. Although the Beautiful Zombie was quite intelligent, her IQ wasn't exceptionally high—this should work without issue.

He then untied the rope from his arm, fastened it to the railing, and secured the zip line, preparing to slide down directly from the outside of the building!

Of course, such a high-difficulty maneuver was usually only mastered by trained soldiers or experienced rock climbers. This was Bai Wen's first time attempting it, but he truly had no choice. Things like acrophobia? In the apocalypse, that was a luxury no one could afford.

As expected, a few minutes later, the rooftop door was violently kicked open. The grenade's safety mechanism disengaged, and it rolled right to the Beautiful Zombie's feet.

"Bye-bye~" Bai Wen, already prepared, waved at the Beautiful Zombie before plunging headfirst down the zip line at high speed.

BOOM!

Flames erupted into the sky, instantly engulfing the entire rooftop in a fiery blast.

Bai Wen didn't have time to confirm whether the Beautiful Zombie was dead or alive. The moment he landed, he unhooked the harness, already gripping his two pistols, and opened fire on the approaching zombies.

Pew-pew-pew-pew!

After a rapid series of gunshots, over a dozen zombies collapsed with headshots. Bai Wen swiftly weaved through the horde, sprinting toward the Safe Spot.

In Bai Wen's eyes now, these ordinary zombies weren't even worth considering as a threat.

As long as he took the right route, had enough firepower, and avoided being completely surrounded, he could easily escape unscathed.

Less than five minutes after he left, a charred figure plummeted from the sky with a thud. She let out a series of agonized shrieks, desperately clawing forward, but her injuries were severe—she wouldn't last long.

She dragged herself to a zombie corpse, suddenly opening her bloodied maw to tear into it with frenzied bites, devouring it ravenously.

Then, the charred flesh on her body began to visibly regenerate at an astonishing speed, quickly scabbing over and peeling away—restoring her to pristine condition!

Even her two legs, which had been blown off in the explosion, rapidly regrew as she continued to gorge herself on the corpses.

Bai Wen dashed through streets and alleys, gunning down over twenty ordinary zombies along the way. But his Crystal earnings were pitiful. Today really was an unlucky day—not only had he gained nothing, but he'd also encountered that freakish zombie. Had it been blown to bits?

SCV chimed in: "SCV products guarantee quality. Barring unforeseen circumstances, she's definitely dead!"

"Good!" Bai Wen quickly returned to the entrance area. Out of habit, he circled the vicinity twice to ensure it was safe, casually clearing out nearby zombies before deciding to call it a day. He'd head back, rest up, and resume "hunting" tomorrow.

But just as he reached the Sewer entrance, he suddenly spotted a suspicious figure lurking around the corner ahead, crouched and peering out—clearly surveilling the Safe Spot's entry point.

Bai Wen remained expressionless as he quietly approached, though inwardly he was quite shocked. He had only spent one night at the safe spot before being discovered. Could it be someone from the Black Cloud Safe Zone? But this person's equipment didn't seem to match.

"Don't move," Bai Wen pressed his pistol against the back of the other's head, instantly freezing them in place. Their body began trembling violently before their legs gave out, collapsing to the ground.

"B-big bro, d-don't kill me! I-I was just passing by to get some soy sauce!" The voice was choked with sobs, youthful and clearly belonging to someone quite young.

Bai Wen nearly lost his composure. "Soy sauce? Does anyone still sell soy sauce now?"

"Y-yes! At Zombie Old Wang's Store two streets away!" The person wiped their tears pitifully.

"Zombies sell soy sauce now?" Bai Wen continued suppressing his amusement, keeping his tone cold.

"Of course they do! If you don't believe me, come see—wahh—" Mid-sob, the figure suddenly sprang up from the ground and twisted away.

Bang! The bullet grazed past their nose by three centimeters, the sheer force still carving a wound across the tip. Ignoring the pain, they lunged at Bai Wen with a vicious slash toward his neck.

Bai Wen tilted his head to dodge. With senses five to six times sharper than an average person's, the attack moved in slow motion before his eyes—effortless to evade. As he sidestepped the dagger, he seized the assailant's wrist and squeezed lightly.

"Ow!" The figure yelped in pain, dropping the dagger instantly. Bai Wen's pistol returned to their forehead.

He flashed a bright smile. "Try moving again."

Then his smile faded. The attacker was just a fourteen or fifteen-year-old boy, gaunt from hunger but not as emaciated as the survivors from the safe zones in his past life—this kid must still get at least one decent meal a day.

"Talk. Who are you, and what are you doing here?" Bai Wen demanded coldly.

The boy mirrored Bai Wen's grin. "If you want to kill me, just do it. Why waste words?"

"Then may humanity still exist in your next life. Goodbye." Bai Wen's finger tightened on the trigger.

"Stop!" A sharp, urgent shout rang out behind him. Bai Wen's second pistol was already raised, aimed at the sudden, graceful figure that had appeared.

"Sister Yan Jiang, why are you here?" The boy's voice brightened with hope.

For all his tough talk, no one truly welcomed death. Even in this living hell, survival was preferable.

Bai Wen let the two reunite. The woman called Yan Jiang first asked the boy worriedly, "Tai Long, are you okay?"

"I'm fine, Sister Yan Jiang. You shouldn't have come!" Tai Long glanced at Bai Wen's calm expression and the twin gun barrels, sighing helplessly.

"Don't be ridiculous. How could I not save you when you're in danger?" Yan Jiang flicked his forehead before turning to Bai Wen, raising her hands. "Sir, please don't be alarmed. We mean no harm—we're just looking for food."

"How did you know this was the entrance?" Bai Wen asked flatly.

"It... it was by accident that we saw you. Yesterday, when you were being chased by zombies, you first threw a grenade, then lifted the manhole cover and went inside!" Yan Jiang answered honestly.

Bai Wen was very surprised. He hadn't noticed anyone nearby at all yesterday.

He immediately thought of the television tower not far away. If someone was at the high-end restaurant on the tower with a telescope, they could easily monitor the area for several kilometers around.

So he bluffed, "The television tower is really a great spot—not only safe, but also perfect for keeping an eye on the surroundings. And you must have plenty of food supplies there, so why come here looking for food?"
