Chapter 8: Woe What a Dance

Nevermore's ballroom was a gothic cathedral of light and shadow, its chandeliers dripping with crystals that caught the fairy lights draped across stone arches. The Rave'N dance pulsed with energy, music thumping through the air, heavy with the scent of perfume and polished wood. Adam Stiels adjusted his black tie, the fabric stiff against his throat, his HUD glowing: Level 1, 10/100 uses, 10-minute cooldowns. The Time Control System was his trump card, but memory gaps about the Hyde and Crackstone made Wednesday's monster hunt a labyrinth. Tonight, he was Enid's date, tasked with watching Tyler Galpin for the Nightshades. His goals: protect Enid, dodge Wednesday's suspicions, and steal a dance or two. Let's not crash and burn, he thought, smoothing his blazer.

Enid Sinclair twirled onto the dance floor, her glittery dress shimmering like a disco ball, pink streaks in her hair glowing under the lights. "You clean up nice, troublemaker," she teased, her grin wide, her werewolf energy electric. Adam's heart raced, his grin matching hers. "You're stealing the show, Sinclair," he said, offering his hand. They danced, her laughter a melody against the pulsing beat, her hand warm in his. Ajax Petropolus watched from the sidelines, his gorgon eyes narrowing, snakes twitching under his cap. Jealousy's a bad look, dude, Adam thought, focusing on Enid's smile, her dress catching every light in the room.

Wednesday stood by a pillar, her black dress a void against the festive glow, her eyes scanning the crowd like a predator. Her latest vision—claws, blood, a monster—screamed danger at Rave'N. "Tyler's off," she told Adam, her voice low, sharp as a scalpel. "Your memory gaps aren't helping, Stiels. Stay sharp." Adam nodded, his gaps a fog where the Hyde's identity should be. Tyler Galpin, all charm and coffee-stained apron, laughed with normies across the room, his smile too easy. Something's wrong, but what? Adam wondered, frustration coiling.

Bianca Barclay took the stage, her siren song weaving through the air, a haunting melody that pulled at the crowd's hearts. Her silver jewelry glinted like scales, her voice hypnotic, her eyes commanding. The room swayed, entranced, and Adam clapped, impressed. "She's got skills," he told Enid, who nodded, her eyes wide with awe. "Total queen," Enid said, squeezing his arm. Bianca joined the Nightshades after, whispering about Tyler. "He's hiding something," she said, her siren instincts sharp. Adam's gaps blocked any insight, gnawing at him.

A creak echoed above, a massive wooden beam—a stage prop—swaying dangerously over Enid. Adam's pulse spiked. Stop Time: 40 seconds. Activate? The world froze—Enid mid-twirl, her dress sparkling; the beam suspended, its wood splintered; fairy lights static like fireflies. Adam sprinted, boots pounding the polished floor, and shoved the beam aside, his muscles burning as it crashed harmlessly. The system snarked: Hero move, Romeo. Don't expect a medal from Wednesday. Time resumed, and Enid gasped, her eyes wide. "Adam, you saved me!" She hugged him tightly, her warmth flooding his senses, her scent like vanilla and pine. "You're my hero," she whispered, her eyes shining. Adam's heart stuttered, his monologue swirling: Her smile's worth every second, but these gaps are a nightmare. What's the monster?

Wednesday approached, her stare piercing. "Nice save, but Tyler's the key. Find out what he's hiding." Adam nodded, still reeling from Enid's embrace. For a prank, he targeted Tyler. Stop Time: 40 seconds. The world froze, Tyler mid-laugh, his coffee-stained grin locked. Adam tied his shoelaces to a chair, the knots tight and petty. The system laughed: Tying Tyler's shoes? You're dancing with danger, kid. Time resumed, and Tyler tripped, cursing as the crowd roared with laughter. Wednesday's smirk was faint but approving, her eyes glinting.

Enid pulled Adam back to the dance floor, her hand warm, her grin infectious. "You're trouble, but I like it," she said, her voice soft, her eyes locking with his. Ajax's glare burned from across the room, but Adam ignored it, lost in Enid's light. Bianca rejoined them, her siren performance still buzzing. "Keep an eye on Tyler," she whispered, her voice low. Adam's gaps gnawed at him, the Hyde a shadow he couldn't grasp. His monologue churned: Enid's my light, Wednesday's my challenge, but these gaps are gonna get someone hurt. Gotta stay one step ahead. The system pinged: 11/100 uses. Don't let love blind you, hero.
