Chapter 9 - The Voice Behind the Door

The ancient staircase seemed endless.

With every step Kael took, the air around him grew colder. The glowing symbols carved into the walls pulsed softly, as if they possessed a heartbeat of their own.

His mother's voice still lingered in his mind.

"If you have reached this place, then the prophecy has already begun."

The words sent countless questions racing through his thoughts. What prophecy? Why had everyone hidden the truth from him? And why did it feel as though the kingdom itself had been waiting for his arrival?

At last, the staircase came to an end.

Before him stood a massive golden door covered with ancient symbols that resembled the mark on his hand. Unlike the rest of the palace, this door carried an overwhelming aura of magic.

Kael cautiously placed his hand upon it.

The moment his skin touched the door, golden light spread across its surface.

"Royal blood confirmed," an ancient voice echoed through the chamber.

The door slowly began to open.

As it did, countless whispers filled the air.

"The heir has arrived."

"The chosen one has returned."

"The kingdom's fate is in his hands."

Kael stepped inside.

The chamber was unlike anything he had ever seen. Crystal pillars stretched toward the ceiling, illuminating ancient murals that depicted the history of Elysium. In the center of the room floated a glowing orb of golden light.

Yet something felt strange.

There was no Echo Crystal.

No ancient treasure.

Only silence.

"Where am I?" Kael asked.

"You stand within the Chamber of Memories."

The mysterious voice from before answered him.

Kael immediately turned around but saw no one.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"I am the keeper of the palace's memories."

"Show yourself."

"I cannot."

The voice sounded almost sorrowful.

"For a thousand years, I have remained bound to this chamber."

Kael walked closer to the glowing orb.

"What do you want from me?"

"Nothing."

The orb suddenly grew brighter.

"It is you who came seeking answers."

Images immediately appeared around him.

He saw the kingdom of Elysium at its peak. Citizens laughed in the streets while dragons soared through the sky. Ancient guardians protected the kingdom alongside the royal family.

Then he saw war.

Darkness spreading across the land.

The royal palace burning.

The Echo Crystal shattering into countless fragments.

And finally...

A man dressed in black robes standing before the crystal.

His face remained hidden by shadows.

"Who is that?" Kael asked.

No answer came.

Instead, the vision changed once more.

This time, he saw himself.

Or rather, a future version of himself.

He stood upon the royal throne wearing black armour while darkness consumed the kingdom around him.

His eyes glowed crimson instead of gold.

"No..." Kael whispered.

The vision disappeared instantly.

"What was that?"

"One possible future."

Kael took several steps backward.

"You mean I could destroy Elysium?"

"Every choice creates countless possibilities."

The keeper's voice echoed calmly throughout the chamber.

"The prophecy was never written in certainty. It was written in possibility."

Kael remained silent.

For the first time, he realized something important.

He was not destined to become Elysium's saviour.

Nor was he destined to become its destroyer.

His choices alone would determine the kingdom's future.

Suddenly, the chamber began shaking violently.

The golden orb dimmed.

"What is happening?" Kael asked.

"The kingdom's barrier has been breached."

Outside the palace, dark clouds covered the sky.

Seraphina and Arven immediately prepared their weapons as ancient alarms echoed throughout Elysium.

"The barrier protecting the kingdom has been broken!" one of the guardians shouted.

"Impossible!" Seraphina replied. "No outsider should be able to find Elysium."

A massive explosion shook the city walls.

Dark figures emerged from the shadows surrounding the kingdom.

But these were not Shadowborn.

They were something far older.

Something that should not exist.

Back within the Chamber of Memories, the mysterious voice spoke once more.

"They have finally come."

"Who?" Kael asked.

There was a brief silence before the keeper answered.

"The hunters of the Echo Crystal."

Kael's expression immediately changed.

"They know I'm here?"

"No."

The voice grew colder.

"They have always known."

Far away, hidden within the darkness, a hooded figure smiled while observing the kingdom.

"After a thousand years," the figure whispered, "the gates of Elysium have opened once more."

The stranger slowly removed a golden pendant bearing the royal crest of Elysium.

"Let us finally meet, Kael Arwyn."
