Vale's POV
"Finally," the voice in my incomplete bond whispered.
Before I could process what that meant, Vincent's shadow army attacked.
Dark creatures poured over us like a black wave. I tried to move, to fight, but my body wouldn't respond. The battle with the Devourer had left me completely empty.
"Vale, stay down!" Dante threw himself over me as shadow claws raked the air where my head had been.
Around us, my friends formed a protective circle despite their exhaustion. But they were barely standing. One good hit would finish any of them.
This was it. We were going to die.
Then something impossible happened.
One of Vincent's shadow creatures stopped attacking. It tilted its head, confused, then turned and struck another shadow creature instead.
"What?" Vincent snarled. "No! Obey me!"
But more shadow creatures were rebelling. Breaking free from his control and fighting their former allies.
