Chapter 65: Brian Mills
"Hey, boss."
"Barney, is everything taken care of in Miami?"
"Yes, boss. I went to the police station this morning to give a statement. Everything is fine. They ruled it a righteous act and even gave us a 'Good Citizen' award for Miami. Thank you, boss."
"Alright, since that's settled, I need you to go to London, pick up my mother, and take her to Devinshire Castle in Oxford. You'll be protecting my mother, Lina. Bring your gear; there might be danger. The job is for two months, at two million dollars a month. Any problems with that?"
"No problem, boss. I'll depart for London in an hour. I can be with your mother in twelve hours."
"Very good. That's all. Be careful, Barney. Bye."
"Understood. Rest assured, boss, we'll be careful. Goodbye."
William then called his private lawyer, Anthony, at the Yuelida Law Firm.
"Good morning, William. Calling me so early? Are you in some kind of trouble?" Anthony's cheerful voice came through the phone.
"Good morning, Anthony. I do need your help with something. I want to buy Devinshire Castle in Oxford. What was the price you told me last time?"
"Without the thousand acres surrounding it, just the castle and the ten acres immediately around it, the price is about four million pounds. Why the sudden interest?"
To him now, a few million was small change. He was confident he would win the upcoming card game, but first, he had to arrange for his mother's safety.
So William didn't hesitate. "As long as it's under five million, buy the castle. Can you get it done by tomorrow?"
"Of course. Right now, people are eager to sell real estate to buy stocks. Since 1998, many stocks have gone up sixfold, and some lucky ones have even gone up tenfold. The owners of Devinshire Castle will be happy to sell. Rest assured, William. If I get on it today, you can expect good news," Anthony guaranteed.
"Okay, I'm counting on you, Anthony."
"Don't worry, I'm on it. I'll contact the castle's owners now. Bye."
"Bye."
William sat on the sofa, thinking about any remaining vulnerabilities. He was taking a huge risk. Lesifer did everything for money, and if William won the card game, Lesifer would definitely retaliate. The most likely scenario was that he would try to kidnap William or someone he cared about.
*Damn, I almost forgot about Alexander,* William thought, realizing he needed to ensure her safety as well.
In this critical situation, William grew frustrated by his lack of manpower. Finding suitable men wasn't easy. He had no choice but to call Barney again.
"Hey, boss. We're cleaning our equipment and getting ready to leave. Did you need something else?" Barney said.
William said, "Barney, do you know any other skilled bodyguards? Preferably a tactical team. I have one more person who needs protection."
Barney thought for a moment. "A tactical team? If you don't mind their age, boss, I know a five-man team. They're all ex-Special Service Bureau. They used to work as bodyguards for the rich, but they're a bit older now and don't get much work. I promise you, though, these guys are top-tier. The team has a mobility expert, a computer expert, and a logistics expert. The most skilled is their leader, a former ace from the Bureau named Brian Mills."
"Okay. Where is this team based?" William asked.
"They're mostly active in Miami, but they'll travel outside the U.S. if the job requires it," Barney said.
"That's perfect. The job is in Miami, Barney. It won't be for more than a week. They need to protect someone here for three days, then escort them to Switzerland to wait for me. Is five hundred thousand dollars enough?"
"More than enough, boss. Because of their age, their rates are low. They'd protect a starlet for four hundred dollars a day. They'll be thrilled. Thank you for the trust. I promise they're the best in the business. Often, they take out the killer before he even sees the target," Barney said with a smile.
William heard Barney's comment and raised an eyebrow. "Damn it, Barney, are they bodyguards or assassins? Suddenly I'm feeling like your recommendation is unreliable."
Barney mentally kicked himself, knowing he had said too much, but he was still very confident in Brian Mills.
He quickly explained, "Boss, it's just their style. Brian Mills is a guy who's good at going on the offensive. Sam, their computer and surveillance expert, usually detects the threat first. Then Brian takes the initiative and attacks the killer. It's actually safer that way. The client is often completely unaware that there was a situation until it's over. That's why they aren't famous—employers often think they're useless because nothing ever seems to happen."
"Alright. I can't find anyone else right now, so I'll have to trust you. Contact them. Tell them if they can keep the client safe without them even getting scared, I'll add a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bonus afterward. And I'll pay in cash if they ask."
"Boss, they'll definitely want cash. It's tax-free, and these guys are all broke. And trust me, no one in Miami is a match for them. It's a lucky day if they're not the ones causing trouble for others," Barney said with a laugh.
"I'm sending you the information now. Time is tight, so find them immediately," William said.
"Okay, boss, bye," Barney replied.
"Bye."
After hanging up the phone, Barney looked up a number and dialed it.
A few seconds later, a low voice, characteristic of a middle-aged man, answered. "Hello, Barney. Why are you calling? What's going on?"
"I am, man. Do you have time now? I've got a good job for you," Barney said.
"Yes, besides spending time with my daughter, I have plenty of time. You know my situation."
Barney looked at the photo William had just sent. Seeing the beautiful brown-haired woman, whose name was listed as Ambrosio, Barney was certain she must be the boss's girlfriend. It made sense. Why else would the boss send his own elite team to protect his mother while hiring another team to protect this woman? It would be strange if she wasn't his girlfriend.
"Brian, this job comes from my current employer. You'll be protecting a model in Miami for three days. After that, you'll escort her to Switzerland to meet with my employer. The whole thing won't take more than a week. The pay is five hundred thousand dollars. Are you interested?" Barney explained.
