Penny's POV
The sound is so soft that I almost convince myself that I had imagined it. A faint click, like metal against metal, but loud enough in the silence. Andrew's breathing steadily beside me, heavy with sleep, but mine… mine feels like I swallowed thunder.
Do I wake him? Or do I take a look?
The apartment's still, like the air is holding its breath. My bare feet touch the floor and I instantly regret it as the boards creak under my feet. I freeze immediately, my heart beating loud and fast, hammering in my ears. There's nothing. Just the shadows stretching across the hall.
I slip out of bed with the locket in my hand, and creep down the hallway. My eyes dart between the locked door and the balcony glass, half-expecting the shape of a person to appear. But nothing.
And then,
"Penny?" Andrew's voice cuts in in the dark, startling me.
