Chapter 2 - A doomed future

The world we live in is a dangerous world. Cracks and monsters could pop out of nowhere and put the lives of the civilians in danger without warning.

People called it the apocalypse and the end of the world, since we had no hope or chance of survival against monsters that firearms had little to no effect on.

But in this dangerous world, humans found hope. And the ones we put our hopes and fate into are the Espers. Humans who underwent changes and gained psychic powers with the appearance of the cracks.

I mean, it's a story we all know, so to cut a long story short, these Espers aren't exactly omnipotent since they have a limit.

And to overcome this limit, they need to be physically involved with a guide. The other set of humans that underwent changes during the emergence of the cracks.

But it didn't make them all-powerful or strong. They're weak as fuck, trust me. But they have a power that can calm an Esper who is on the verge of overload, a state that leads the Espers to break down and possibly put them, and the world around them, in danger.

Um, I think we get the gist of it, so moving on...

Anyway, what I'm about to tell you now is something that the world hasn't discovered yet.

As I said, I'm a transmigrator so I've seen the future that these morons haven't seen.

A future where even these so-called guides with a high sync rate with Espers could do nothing about.

A doomed future.

I don't know why I was sent back to the past, but I plan to stop it at all costs.

*Slam*

"Mister Choi Joon-ho, it has come to our notice of your recent... Activity." The officer in front of me slammed a notepad on the desk in front of me. My information was on the front page so even if I hadn't said anything, they already knew a ton about me.

I was in handcuffs and in an interrogation room in the police station like some criminal, being interrogated on what all that was about.

Ahem.

"I have no comment." I simply said, retaining the smile on my lips and this made him frustrated.

I mean, if I wasn't going to talk, they might as well give up, don't you think?

"I simply felt like the world would end soon, so I wanted to end my life first," I said, shrugging nonchalantly. "But that cool and handsome Esper saved me and what do you know? The world didn't end. Can I go home now?"

This was all they were going to get out of me, I swear.

The officer shoved his fingers through his hair in frustration.

"Just give it a rest." Another officer said as he walked in and we both turned to see who it was.

Turned out, it was the chief of staff, so the officer immediately stood at attention and saluted.

"What... If I may ask, what are you doing here, sir?" He asked, and I could tell he was nervous.

The chief of staff being here was a pretty big deal.

"Relax, it's nothing grand." He said and then glanced at me. "Anyway, this interrogation section is over."

"Sir?"

"Though it was a reckless act to try to take his life, which should get him a sentence, good fortune came along with his recklessness."

I nodded, proud that someone had finally recognized the merit of my actions.

"If he didn't try to commit suicide at that time of the day and so many people didn't crowd around him, they'd have been shopping in the center where the Earthquake happened and more lives would be lost."

"But that was a coincidence. Of course, he didn't know something like that would happen when he decided to take his own life."

Of course I did. I'm not stupid.

"In any case, it saved a lot of lives." He said and then looked at me. He could see my smugness and that suddenly irritated him. "But don't be complacent." He said and I flinched. "Fortune smiling on you this time doesn't mean it'll smile on you a second time. So, don't take life for granted, kid."

Kid? I felt offended by that word. Excuse me, sir, I'll have you know that I am 26 years old and 55 years old if I were to add the life I lived in my previous life.

Wait, the equation is a bit wrong. Should I calculate it from the point I was returned to from the past or...?

Still, I'm not a kid.

(He died at 29)

"But sir, we still can't release him. I feel..." The officer gulped. "He'll make even more trouble."

I leaned forward, my chin on my palm, and smirking proudly.

Look at you being all smart. Of course, I'll make even more trouble. But let's keep that between you and me.

"Even if we wanted to keep him here, we can't anyway." The chief of staff said. "Someone has already issued his release."

"Who? A family member."

"I wish." The chief of staff said, looking a bit disturbed. "It'd be easy to handle one family member but this is someone we can't afford to mess with."

Hm? What are they talking about now?

The chief of staff suddenly turned to me and asked,

"Kid, what's your relationship with the S-class Esper?" He asked and my ears twitched. Oh? I see how it is.

I giggled.

"No relationship whatsoever, sir," I said but they weren't buying it.

"If you don't have a relationship, then why the hell is he outside, waiting for you to be released?"

Ah, this happened way more easily than I thought. He didn't give a response so I was sure I had failed.

I was going to ask him like two to three more times before I was able to completely sway him but I succeeded in the first try.

Sung-min, you're just too adorable to ignore.

I smiled and then said,

"Maybe because I promised him dinner tonight." I nonchalantly said and then got up. "So, if we're done here, can you please get these bracelets off me?" I grinned. "They kinda hurt."

My plan as a love-struck fool was simple. Save as many lives as I could to appease my conscience.

But above all, save the one man whom I can not do without.

I rubbed my red wrists as I walked out of the interrogation room and then saw him leaning on the wall. I could feel his cold energy from where I stood. So melancholic.

It subconsciously brought a warm smile to my lips.

He probably doesn't know this yet but I'm sure he's begun to feel it. I am the puzzle that will fill the blank in his life and make him complete.

It looked like a beautiful beginning from this point. But you know something? Not all beautiful beginnings end with a happy ending.

Still... I plan to make mine so, at all costs.
