My head was a chaos. It had multiple thoughts on multiple people, making me go crazy. I was sure I loved Matthew and wanted to get him out of Mr. Wolfe's evil trap, but a part of me couldn't forgive him for his selfish side, especially after the nightmare I had. If only Mr. Wolfe didn't offer me the contract, I'd have lost Mira a long time ago, as Matthew didn't bother about saving her.
However, my logical side kept telling me it was his money, and I shouldn't expect him to spend it on my sister. But the only question that started to make me restless was if I were in his position, would I have done the same? No! I'd have prioritized a person's life over everything.
As if it was not enough, I couldn't stop thinking about Mr. Wolfe. I hated him for everything he had done, but he saved my sister and kept saving her despite everything I had done. He could've targeted her if something bothered him, but he didn't do it. The chaos and the confusion in my head started to kill me from inside.
"Are you still thinking about working with Mr. Wolfe?" I texted Matthew despite knowing I'd not get any proper reply.
Poor heart, it couldn't stop wishing for Matthew's safety even after everything.
As usual, the only reply I got from him was another blame, accusing me of all the things. But I didn't get angry. If I had known that he was sleeping with some other girl, I might've reacted the same way.
Days passed, but nothing changed between us. Mr. Wolfe and Matthew were both pretending everything was fine between them because of the business, while I kept failing to convince Matthew despite the number of times I tried.
After many days I reached the hospital and faced Mira's wrath for not visiting her regularly like I used to.
"It feels like I am not your priority anymore." She pouted.
I held her hands and kissed her knuckles, saying, "You are always my priority. I have been just busy…"
"Busy earning money for us." She spoke in a low tone.
Her face turned pale, and she kept quiet. Her eyes filled with tears, which she tried to hide from me.
"Hey! What's wrong?" I pulled her towards me.
"Nothing." She pulled herself away like a typical rebel teenager. "You have to struggle for both of us. If only I had gone with our mom and dad, you wouldn't have to…"
"Mira!" I yelled, standing straight. "Stop talking like that."
She scoffed. "Fine! I won't say that again."
Then I noticed the fresh flowers and fruits beside her bed. Out of curiosity, I asked, "Do you receive them every day?"
"Yeah!" She smiled. "They truly lift up my mood."
She then looked at me, asking in her excited tone, "Elira, do you know about the sponsor? Have you met him?"
"What? Me? No! How could I?" I tried to sound confident, but I stammered.
Even though I couldn't see it, I felt the redness of my cheeks, and I pressed my palms together.
She looked at me confused as she asked, "Okay! Why are you stressed?"
I rolled my eyes and lied, "I am not."
Ignoring me, she took one of the apples into her hands and said, "I want to meet this person and say how thankful I am for saving my life."
"Mira!" I looked into her eyes and sat beside her. "What if this person is a bad one? Like the one who plays with other people?"
She narrowed her eyebrows and looked at me suspiciously for a moment. Then she let out a sigh and spoke, "Everyone on this earth is bad in their own way. At least, this bad person saved my life."
Her words made me fall into thoughts. I shook my head when I started to agree to what she said.
"No!" I held her hand. "Don't act like a philosopher. Tell me, what if that person is really a bad one? A monster?"
"Are you okay?" She freed her hand from my grip. "You are acting weird."
"Right." I kept silent, not wanting to drag the conversation.
We then happily talked about multiple things until she asked, "Where's my brother-in-law?"
A sharp pain hit my heart after hearing her. Letting out a fake smile, I replied, "He has been so busy. And…"
In a low tone, I spoke, "He is not your brother-in-law."
"Elira, is everything okay between you two?" She looked at me, concerned.
I didn't want her to bother about my issues. I simply smiled, saying, "Of course! It's because we are not any couple for you to address him like that."
She didn't stop looking at me with her worried face. Having no choice, I only switched the topic to the new series about her favorite superhero.
Before I left, the doctor and I had a conversation about Mira's health. His positive response lifted my spirits, and I thanked him with all my sincerity.
"It's because Mr. Wolfe arranged the specialists and has been paying lots of money for them every two weeks. Because she has been receiving the treatment she needs, she should be able to live like other teenagers. You just have to wait for a few more months."
I nodded my head. "Please take good care of her."
In the night, after reaching the villa, I couldn't help but smile brightly at the thought of Mira attending classes, roaming with her friends, and doing all other things girls her age would love to do.
But again, I wondered how I could afford the expenses once the contract ended. He'd bear our expenses only if we were bound by contract. The future scared me.
I fell on my bed while thinking about the ways to earn money after ending the contract. When my head started to ache with all the thoughts and worries, the door suddenly pushed open, which left me startled. I stood straight, and when my gaze fell on Mr. Wolfe, a shiver ran across my spine.
His white shirt was stained with blood, and the hole on his shirt right above his heart, which looked like a gunshot, frightened me.
His left arm was bleeding while his right held the gun, and the way he ran towards me and pulled me into a protective hug left me perplexed.
