Chapter 5 - Why is the Villian Shop so Expensive!?

Anyways, the F's that the system showed as his stats didn't look too good either. He was more pathetic than he had thought was possible for a human being to be.

In the game, Lucas had been well known for having some of the worst starting statistics of any recruitable character.

Apparently, that translated accurately to this reality as well.

It seemed he had a lot to do to get himself ready for the Legion's invasion if he didn't want to end up as a statistic.

I'll make a training regiment and get to work later, now I still need to familiarize myself with the System.

He decided to check out the Quests tab next to see what was going on.

=====

[SYSTEM QUEST LOG]

[Active Quest: "Petty Revenge"

Objective: Get back at Lydia Astrolome for her public humiliation

Reward: +10 Villain Points, Basic Skill: "Intimidating Presence", Full System Integration

Failure: Death

Time Remaining: 23:18:34]

=====

Lucas wondered how was he supposed to get revenge on someone he was actively trying to befriend?

Would he have to discard what he had been building and go full Psycho Villian mode? Maybe the system will tell him more?

=====

[System Notice: Quest parameters are non-negotiable. "Getting back at" the target can be interpreted broadly, but the action must result in some form of consequence or embarrassment for Lydia Astrolome that can be directly attributed to your actions.]

=====

Great. Even the system is reading my thoughts. But this means I don't have to do anything drastic to Lydia to fulfill the quest but I wouldn't want to humiliate someone I'm trying to be friends with.

But if it's my life or her ego, I'm sorry Lydia but my life is obviously more important. Besides, I have 23 hours to figure out something.

Lucas leaned against one of the stone pillars flanking the library entrance. He was trying to think of a solution that wouldn't destroy his chances of building an alliance with Lydia while also not making him end up dead.

In the game, Lydia's greatest weakness wasn't her limited mana pool or her defensive nature. It was her pride in her academic achievements. She took her academic reputation super seriously, and anything that threatened it could send her into a spiral of depression.

But could he really use that weakness against her?

Even if it satisfied the system's requirements, it felt wrong to do something that down low and despicable even if he was supposed to be the Villian.

=====

[Reminder: Extended inaction will result in increasing penalties. Current penalty level: 1 (Mild headaches). Next penalty level: 2 (Severe pain and partial motor function impairment)]

=====

As if summoned by the warning, a dull ache began building behind his eyes. Not as severe as before, but definitely present.

I still need more information about this system, Lucas thought. There might be details I'm missing.

Lucas entered the Shop next.

Holy shit! So many options. Spells, Equipment, and even Potions!

But when he saw the prices, his heart plummeted again. He only had 0 Villain Points.

[Ding!]

[Villian Points can be earned through completing quests and performing villainous acts. The more heinous the deed, the greater the reward!]

The system helpfully explained to him.

F*CK. Does this mean I really have to be the Villian. I hope not.

"System, explain to me how this whole thing works. Can I get points without doing villain stuff?"

[Host can get points by going up in rank or completing quests. Otherwise, there is no way to increase points without completing villainous actions.]

"I see. Well, just know I won't be committing r*pe or anything like that."

[System will not force Host to commit more heinous crimes but Host should keep in mind that more heinous crimes reward Host with more Villian Points.]

Another message quickly followed.

[Af... ..l, Sy....m ha.. to .... Host i..o a fal... s...e .f se..ri.y.]

But it quickly disappeared and was replaced by another one.

[After all, System would never do anything to harm Host.]

Damn. That is suspicious. I'll worry about that later. For now, it's the time for the last one. Equipment.

So that's how it is. It seems I'll have to find better equipment as well if I want to survive the War with the Legion.

All in all, the situation was bad but he had two years until the Legion went all out in it's offense so if he stayed low-key and accumulated power until then he would definitely survive.

"....and that's why frogs can't eat chickens!" A voice said as two guys passed beside him.

The one who told the joke was blonde with blue eyes and a cheerful smile while the one he was telling it to had long black hair and a stern expression.

Lucas didn't pay them any attention at first but then his eyes widened and he spun around in shock.

Seeing the guys clearer, it was as he had thought. It was the protagonist, Damion and the rival character, Zacard who were having this conversation but Lucas knew this shouldn't be possible as at this point in the story Zacard should absolutely and utterly despise Damion, not cracking jokes with him.

As, Lucas watched them go he began to think of how things were in the game.
