Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 – The First Dungeon’s Breath

The narrow canyon walls loomed high on either side, casting jagged shadows that seemed to writhe as the cold wind howled through the fissures. Rain adjusted the strap of his worn leather satchel and tightened the grip on his blade. Each step forward sank into a soft layer of moss and damp soil, the scent of wet earth filling the air.

Behind him, the party's footsteps echoed faintly. There was Lira, the sharp-eyed archer with her bow already drawn; Kael, the mage whose hands twitched with restrained mana; and Rurik, the towering warrior whose armor plates clinked softly as he moved. Though they had only just met within the VRMMORPG's sprawling city hub, a shared quest had bound them together — The Breath of the Fallen Dragon.

They finally arrived at the jagged entrance to the dungeon, a yawning black mouth framed by thick, thorn-like vines. From within came the deep, rhythmic sound of breathing. It was slow, heavy, and unnatural.

"That's not an effect, right?" Lira whispered, eyes narrowing at the darkness.

Kael smirked faintly, but the twitch in his left hand betrayed his unease. "If it's an effect, it's a good one. But… something tells me it's not."

Rain stepped forward, his System Interface flickering in his vision:

[Quest Objective: Enter the dungeon and locate the Dragon's Breath Chamber.][Warning: Difficulty – Moderate to High.]

He could almost feel the game urging him forward, the way the AI subtly applied atmospheric pressure to manipulate emotion.

Inside, the air was damp and heavy. Their footsteps were muffled by the moss-covered stone, and droplets of water slid from the ceiling to echo in the cavern depths. The deeper they went, the more the faint sound of breathing turned into the rasping hiss of something alive — and massive.

They reached a chamber lit by a dim green glow emanating from crystals embedded in the rock. The ground here was littered with half-buried skeletal remains — some human, some… not.

Rain's HUD flashed.

[New Hazard Detected: Miasma Spores][Status Effect: Poison – Light]

He coughed, covering his mouth. "Mask up. This place is toxic."

The group equipped their filter masks, and Kael immediately began tracing a glowing rune in the air, forming a barrier to thin the miasma.

But before they could move further, a sudden, piercing click-click-click echoed through the chamber. The crystals flared brighter, revealing dozens of Venom Crawlers — arachnid-like monsters the size of wolves, with translucent bodies that pulsed with green venom.

Lira loosed an arrow in one fluid motion, pinning the first crawler to the wall. Rurik charged forward, swinging his massive axe in a wide arc that cleaved two of the beasts clean in half.

Rain didn't hesitate. Activating his skill [Blade Rush], he darted forward, his sword leaving a streak of silver light as it sliced through a crawler's head. His system interface pinged:

[Critical Hit!][EXP +120]

The crawlers swarmed from every crevice, forcing the team to back into a defensive circle. Each kill was met with two more emerging from the darkness.

"This isn't stopping!" Kael shouted, unleashing a torrent of flame that charred the nearest group to ash.

Rain scanned the room, then spotted it — a massive, cracked crystal in the center of the chamber, pulsing with the same green glow as the crawlers' bodies.

"It's the core!" he yelled. "Destroy it!"

He sprinted forward, weaving between snapping mandibles and venomous strikes. The moment his blade connected with the crystal, a blinding flash erupted, and every crawler in the chamber froze mid-motion before collapsing into lifeless husks.

The room fell silent, save for the distant, heavy breathing from deeper within the dungeon.

[Objective Updated: Proceed to the Dragon's Breath Chamber.]

Rain exhaled, gripping his blade tighter. Whatever was making that sound was still ahead — and now, there was no turning back.

Teaser Question:What monstrous presence lies ahead in the Dragon's Breath Chamber, and will Rain's party survive their first true boss battle?
