Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The beginning of the end I

At home, they both lay exhausted. They had gone through numerous procedures—even Mei was exhausted.

"Yunxia, you're not building a safe house, you're fucking building a small metropolis. Also—" Mei sat up, squinting. "I finally guessed your plan."

"What?"

"The world's gonna end soon, and you're building a safe house where you and your friends can survive. Am I right?"

Yunxia wasn't surprised. With Mei's kind of imagination, it was no wonder she figured it out. Though she wasn't completely right… nor was she wrong.

"Mmm, you're partly right, yes."

"Yes! I knew it! See, Yunxia—I'm a genius." Mei pointed at all her awards and certificates.

Yunxia couldn't help but smile. From this body's fragmented memories, she knew they were certifications from schools and institutions, proof that Mei knew her stuff. But to Yunxia, they were just plain paper. After all, when the apocalypse begins, who would need them?

Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

Mei jumped up to check.

"Who's there?" Yunxia called out.

"I'm coming!" Mei shouted, thinking it was the delivery person.

But Yunxia knew better. She had sensed killing intent—and there was no way the person behind that door was good, let alone an ally. Before she could warn Mei, the door had already swung open.

A dark-haired guy stepped in. His black eyes were emotionless, weighed down with heavy eye-bags, as though he hadn't slept in days. He carried a don't-talk-to-me aura, dressed in full black, radiating killing intent.

There was no way this kind of person was a good guy.

He sauntered into the room like he owned the place—the audacity! Unfortunately, both Yunxia and Mei were frozen. One from the crushing pressure of his killing intent, the other from sheer shock.

"Ding-dong."

The bell rang again. Yunxia's chains broke, and she could finally move. She looked at the unwelcome guest, then at the trembling Mei. She had to keep her safe.

"You—stay put. And don't touch anything," Yunxia said sharply.

Grabbing the fire extinguisher, she made her way to the door.

"Ding-dong."

The person outside was getting impatient. The man on the couch simply stared at the door, almost… anticipating.

"Ding-dong."

Yunxia peeked through the peephole—and saw the delivery guy.

She sighed. Behind her, Mei had already retreated to her room, shaking like a leaf.

Opening the door, Yunxia was hit with a rush of energy, like a tsunami crashing into her. She instinctively shielded herself. Just as she was about to react—the pressure vanished.

"Good day. Here's your delivery. Please sign here," the man said politely, holding out a pen and clipboard.

Yunxia blinked. "G-good day… okay."

She signed quickly, then noticed the massive pile of boxes stacked behind him. Not surprising—she had ordered a lot—but still… how had he brought them all up without Mei noticing?

"Thank you." His calm voice snapped her back from her thoughts. "I should probably help you move these things inside." He continued, stepping backwards to help move the heavy boxes that filled the hallway out and into the suite.

She counted everything—solar panels, batteries, gallons of diesel fuel, bottles of all types of wine and cigarettes, medicines, electrical appliances, etc. There were a large number of them, and truly she couldn't move them all. "Sigh, even if I did move them, they wouldn't enter inside this suite. Sorry for bothering you, but could you maybe hold on for a while?" She needed to find where to keep all of them.

At that moment, Mei descended like an angel <> actually she peeked out of her room.

"I have a warehouse close here, about 10 kilometers away. It was a gift from my dad 'cause I said I wanted to build a bunker."

Just then, a chuckle began—slow, low and deep, like it was reverberating from the ground. Then another, and another. Soon, the glass side window that once twinkled with star-like street lights of the cityscape was now filled with red glowing eyes.

They both turned to look, and the red eyes disappeared, leaving only black feathers. The boy who was once sitting on the couch was nowhere to be seen. Even the delivery guy had disappeared with the packages, almost like they hadn't existed before. But the look on Mei's face confirmed they had indeed been there just a moment ago. And the chuckling had blown into an uproar of laughter—it was as if it was mocking them.

Turning around, she found that all the lights had gone out. There was a red moon shining right outside the window, and the shadows seemed to writhe and squirm with the darkness.

"Sh*t, not good, we don't have time." The moon wasn't completely red—only a portion of it was red, a small tiny portion.

"Y-Yunxia, what's going on?" Mei asked, her eyes reflecting the terror outside, body visibly frozen.

"M-Mei, the apocalypse… we don't have much time left. We still need to find those two and get out of here."

"Where do you think you're going?"

A dark feminine voice came through from the darkness.

"Y-Yunxia…" Mei called out instinctively before abruptly covering her mouth.

Yunxia couldn't help but notice the way the voice sounded eerily familiar to this body's, and the feeling of being suppressed was evident.

Sh*t, this is bad, she thought.

The figures emerged from the darkness, making their presence known.

A flock of crows coalesced into the silhouette of the guy from earlier, the one who had so rudely barged in.

The other guy on the right didn't appear immediately. Instead, the sound of footsteps on puddles were heard, and a dark slinky liquid began floating upwards, bubble by bubble, creating a slimy dark figure that condensed into a man… the delivery man from earlier.

And as for the person with the voice of Yunxia—she didn't show herself, although it was obvious who she was just from the shadow on the blood-colored walls.

Three pairs of eyes stared at the sky, but it felt like they were being watched by a million red eyes.

In Mei's heart, she knew this was danger.

One moment, she was facing against those three… monsters… people. She didn't know what to call them. But the next thing she knew was she was weightless, falling, into the abyss… was she?

No—she was falling down from the building with Yunxia holding her.

"Stay still, or we'll both die."

Yunxia knew this was a gamble. She was praying with all her stars for a miracle to happen.

"Anything, just anything that can help."

She didn't notice that she was bleeding from the glass shards, nor did she notice the trio that had jumped with them.

But to her surprise, she received a message—the kind that made her heart beat with joy. Normally, she wasn't a fan of Sysi, but hearing that voice… that familiar, annoying system voice made her relieved.

"Ding. Do you wish to activate 'Master's Weapon'?"

Yes! Yunxia shouted internally. If there was a way—even if it was a slim chance—to leave this place alive, she was taking it.

"Ding. Master's Weapon has been activated."
