Chapter 63: Macross – Ambushed and Trapped
Three Zentraedi humanoid mecha, seeing that long-range attacks were useless, immediately charged in, preparing to engage the VF-1SS Valkyrie in close combat.
Monty Hill instantly switched to battroid mode and unleashed a barrage of gunfire at them, taking them down with ease in just a few strikes.
But then, the Macross began its transformation. Lynn Minmay and Lynn Kai were both sucked toward the massive vacuum created by the transformation's openings.
Nearby buildings were also torn apart by the suction, fragments scattering everywhere. Some unfortunate people were directly pulled into the void of space, instantly freezing into ice sculptures.
Lynn Kai spotted a place to grab onto. Without a second thought for Lynn Minmay's life, he let her go and clung desperately to a building, struggling to avoid being swept away.
Monty Hill saw Lynn Minmay cast off by Lynn Kai. He immediately accelerated, switching the VF-1SS Valkyrie back into fighter mode, and darted toward her.
In a hair-raising moment, he caught up with her just in time. With another burst of speed, he flew ahead of her.
Switching the VF-1SS into guardian mode, Monty Hill opened the cockpit and stood up, catching the drifting Lynn Minmay in his arms.
He quickly pulled her back into the cockpit, settling her into the back seat, and gently reassured the panicked girl:
"Minmay, it's okay. It's okay now, everything's over."
No sooner had he spoken than a massive piece of debris slammed into the VF-1SS Valkyrie. With the powerful suction and momentum, the mecha was hurled into an isolated enclosed section, wedging tightly against a wall and a tangle of pipes.
Just like in the movie version, it was stuck fast.
Monty Hill cursed inwardly at the situation.
"What the hell is this supposed to be? Am I seriously replacing Hikaru here? Don't tell me I'll have to go through Misa Hayase's storyline too?
I don't want anything to do with that old lady! I don't have Hikaru's weird taste. That auntie is an absolute no-go! Damn it!
And Lynn Kai, you piece of trash—how dare you throw Minmay away. I hope you're not dead yet, because if I get out of here, I'll make sure to kill you myself…"
From the back seat, Lynn Minmay, watching Monty Hill's shifting expressions and his odd silence, finally asked with concern:
"Brother, are you okay?"
Monty Hill snapped back to himself, tapped his spacesuit helmet, steadied his breathing, and turned to her.
"Minmay, I'm fine. What about you? You didn't get hurt, did you?"
Lynn Minmay shook her head, hugging her knees as she sat curled up.
"I'm fine, brother. Just really scared… I never imagined something like this would happen during my very first concert.
But luckily you were here… otherwise, I would have—ah!"
At that moment, the Macross finished transforming and unleashed a massive heavy particle beam cannon toward the Zentraedi fleet.
Countless battle pods and humanoid mecha caught in its path were instantly vaporized.
Even Zentraedi battleships disintegrated in a dazzling array of explosions, bursting into brilliant fireworks in the void.
The recoil from the Macross's cannon blast shook the ship violently. Terrified again, Lynn Minmay broke down crying.
Monty Hill reclined his seat, moved beside her, and held her tightly, comforting her:
"Minmay, it's alright. I'm here. Don't be afraid."
Minmay only cried harder in his arms, sobbing out her fear and grief.
Monty Hill silently patted her back in comfort until, at last, she calmed down.
He then made a show of pulling a towel from his storage space, handing it to her from inside the cockpit.
"Here, Minmay, wipe your face. I'll try starting the Valkyrie, see if we can break free."
Choking back her tears, Lynn Minmay accepted the towel and wiped herself down.
Monty Hill powered up the VF-1SS Valkyrie, but it was wedged too tightly—half the machine was locked solid in the armor plating.
Without exposing his neo DG cells, there was no way to get free. For now, they were stuck.
If not for the VF-1SS's reinforced armor and PS plating, both he and Minmay would've been crushed into paste by now.
Was the plot really trying to kill him off here? Or maybe it knew his machine's defenses were strong enough, so it deliberately wedged him tighter to keep the story on track?
And the timing—just when he was about to head back in two days.
Could it be this whole setup was intentional? That he was put in this isolated, unsupervised place precisely so he could leave without causing disruptions, even if time shifted afterward?
He sighed. Overthinking wouldn't help.
After all, in this world he was just a tiny nobody, barely even a speck.
Everything would be left to fate. Life was like being forced—if you can't resist, you might as well try to enjoy it.
Shaking off his thoughts, Monty Hill told Lynn Minmay:
"Minmay, the Valkyrie's jammed tight. We can't get out for now. I'll check for another exit—you wait here a moment."
But Minmay gripped his arm tightly, fear written all over her face. It was clear she'd burst into tears again if he left her.
"Brother, let me come with you. I don't want to be alone."
Monty Hill had no choice but to agree. The two climbed out of the cockpit together in search of an escape.
Just then, the gravity in the enclosed section vanished. Both Monty Hill and Lynn Minmay floated into the air.
Startled, Minmay cried out as her skirt floated up, inadvertently giving Monty Hill an eyeful.
He stared for two seconds before quickly averting his gaze.
But Minmay didn't seem embarrassed, nor did she think it improper. Instead, she stuck out her tongue playfully at him.
After all, except for "that," the two of them had been sharing the same bed every day. This sight was nothing new—she saw it every morning.
Now, like a curious child, Minmay delighted in the weightlessness, happily playing as she floated about.
It was her first time freely flying in zero gravity without fear.
Back in the shelter, she had always clung to Monty Hill in terror, never experiencing the thrill of drifting through space like this.
