Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 15 – ROCK BOTTOM 1998

December 13, 1998 – General Motors Place, Vancouver, British Columbia

The screen flickers with grainy black-and-white shots of J.J. Styles standing in a dimly lit locker room, taping his fists, eyes cold. JR's voice narrates over footage from SmackDown and Raw.

JR (voiceover): "A young man from the Philippines… a fighter with no friends in the back… no allies in the ring… just a will to survive and a taste for pain."

Clips of Jeff Jarrett smashing J.J. with a guitar, blood pouring down his face, fade into Jarrett smirking beside Debra.

Jarrett (clip): "Kid, you're outta your league."

Cuts to J.J. busting Jarrett open on Raw, holding the broken guitar aloft as the crowd roars.

JR (voiceover): "Tonight… there are no rules. Tonight, there are no excuses. Tonight… there will be blood."

The Rock Bottom logo slams onto the screen.

Kevin Kelly stands with Jarrett and Debra. Jarrett's in his sleeveless black gear, sunglasses on, cocky smirk in place. Debra wears a revealing silver dress, playing her usual distraction role.

Jarrett: "Street Fight or not, this punk's bitin' off more than he can chew. He thinks one lucky shot makes him a star? Tonight, I'm not just gonna beat him — I'm gonna humiliate him in front of the whole world."

Debra: "And honey, when Jeff's done, I'll make sure everyone remembers the name Jeff Jarrett… not that other guy."

Jarrett struts off, smug as ever.

Michael Cole stands in a different hallway, the lighting colder. J.J. wears black MMA-style shorts with silver trim, black boots, and his hands heavily taped. His bandage from Raw is gone — the scar from the SmackDown cut still visible.

Cole: "J.J., tonight's your first WWF pay-per-view match, and it's against a veteran in a Street Fight. What's your mindset going in?"

J.J. stares directly into the camera.

J.J.: "This isn't about climbing a ladder or earning respect anymore. Jarrett made it personal when he split me open. Tonight, I'm gonna show him… and everybody else in that locker room… that I'm not here to survive. I'm here to hurt people. And Jarrett's the first name on my list."

He walks away without another word.

Jeff Jarrett's theme hits — the crowd boos loudly as he struts down the aisle in his signature gear, white hat, and guitar in hand. Debra follows, blowing kisses to the men in the front row.

King: "There's a smart man, JR. Always bring a lady to ringside. She's better than any weapon!"

JR: "She's not supposed to be out here, King — Slaughter banned her! But look at this, Jarrett's already breaking the rules."

Security meets Debra at ringside and escorts her back up the ramp as she protests. Jarrett shouts after them, furious.

The lights drop.

"Violence Fetish" by Disturbed hits — the crowd explodes into a massive pop. White strobes flash as J.J. Styles walks out slowly, hood up, eyes locked on Jarrett. The fans are on their feet, chanting "J.J.! J.J.!" as he heads to the ring.

JR: "Listen to this ovation! This young man has fought his way through hell the last few weeks, and tonight could be the night his career changes forever."

King: "Or it could be the night Jeff Jarrett ends it before it really starts."

[The Match – Street Fight]

Before the bell, J.J. slides in and charges — they're throwing fists instantly! No lock-ups, no feeling out. J.J. wins the exchange, backing Jarrett into the corner with rapid-fire MMA strikes.

Jarrett rakes the eyes, whips J.J. to the ropes — J.J. ducks a clothesline, rebounds, and nails a huge flying knee that drops Jarrett early.

J.J. rolls out, grabs a steel chair, and slides back in — CRACK! right across Jarrett's back. Crowd roars.

JR: "Good Lord! J.J. Styles is here to fight!"

Jarrett bails to the outside, but J.J. follows — they brawl into the barricade. Jarrett counters with a low blow (crowd boos), then whips J.J. into the steel steps, shoulder-first.

Jarrett pulls a trash can from under the ring and smashes it over J.J.'s head — loud metallic CLANG!

At the 10-minute mark, they're fighting near the guardrail. Jarrett whips J.J. face-first into the steel post — J.J. staggers, and when he turns around, there's blood above his left eyebrow.

King: "He's already bleeding, JR! This could be over quick."

JR: "The kid's got heart, King — and I don't think he's done yet!"

J.J., bloody but furious, blocks another post shot and slams Jarrett's head into the steel three times — Jarrett comes up bleeding now! The crowd erupts.

J.J. grabs Jarrett, whips him over the barricade, and they brawl into the crowd — Attitude Era chaos. Fans slap J.J. on the back as he drags Jarrett toward the tech area.

They climb onto the timekeeper's table. Jarrett tries the Stroke — J.J. blocks it, hooks the head, and suplexes Jarrett off the table through two chairs!

JR: "By God almighty! That young man may have just broken Jarrett in half!"

King: "That's not wrestling, that's insanity!"

Back in the ring, Jarrett catches J.J. with a guitar shot out of nowhere — wood splinters everywhere. Jarrett covers:

1… 2… KICK OUT! The crowd explodes into the loudest pop of the night.

JR: "My God, he kicked out! He kicked out of the Stroke and a guitar shot!"

Jarrett, desperate, swings a steel chair — J.J. ducks, hooks the arms, takes Jarrett down into the Kimura Lock! The crowd's roaring. Jarrett claws for the ropes… almost there… J.J. rolls him back to the center. Jarrett taps!

Bell rings — huge pop!

Finkel: "Here is your winner… J.J. Styles!"

J.J., blood still trickling, stands over Jarrett as the ref raises his hand. JR yells into the headset:

JR: "That young man may have just put himself on the map here in the World Wrestling Federation! This is the night J.J. Styles arrived!"

J.J. is in the trainer's room, stitches being prepared for his eyebrow. Stephanie McMahon passes by the open door, glancing in for a brief moment before walking away without a word — but with the hint of a smirk.

Jarrett storms down another hallway, yelling at officials, vowing revenge.

The last shot of the night is J.J., walking out of the arena in street clothes, fans outside chanting his name as he disappears into the night.
