After checking them and making sure they were fine, Mitchelle finally had the time to properly look at them, noticing how fidgety they seemed, she asked
"what's going on?" She asked, "You guys have been acting weird since you came in. Mind telling me what's going on?"
A few minutes of silence passed until they finally decided to come clean.
"So... you're telling me that there was no earthquake, but what really happened was you guys trying to commit suicide." Michelle said
"It wasn't suicide, we didn't know what it was" Cal' said in defense
"Exactly, haven't you always learnt to ALWAYS run away from the unknown. Your little expedition has now put Michael's life in danger, are you proud of yourselves?" Michelle said going full mom mode on them.
"I called sheriff Jacob and he is on his way right now. I also got the headphones." Tyler said as he returned back into the room.
"Great, put it on him"
"Why does he need those?" Cal' asked
"Looks like his eardrums burst, so they'll be very sensitive now"
"Okay"
"I'm here, Michael... what's wrong with him?... can someone tell me what is wrong with my son?" Jacob said as he stormed into the room.
"Jacob calm down... if you keep yelling like this we're never gonna get anything done" Michelle said
"Tell me what's wrong with my son and I'll calm down." Jacob said looking right at her
"The earthquake that cut short their field trip wasn't an earthquake at all, that was caused by these kids finding and touching something they know nothing about, your son touched something no-one knows anything about and that caused the explosion. Blasting them in different directions, causing all this problems which leads us to our current situation." She said
Jacob took a few seconds to think, "I understand everything"
"You're not mad?" Cal' asked
"Nope, I mean... it's Michael, even if there was a bomb with the word BOMB literally written on it, he'd still touch it, I'm not surprised. What i don't get is, why does he get the short end of the stick? I mean, you guys are practically fine except from slight inconveniencies, but he's lying in the hospital unconscious" He said
"Maybe because he was the closest to the thing?" Sally said hesitating
"Right" Jacob said
"He's waking up" Tyler said when he saw Michael's fingers move.
They turned to Michael waiting for him to fully awaken, his eyelids twitched a bit and his eyes opened
The first thing Michael saw when he woke up was his fathers face
"Dad? Wait, where am I?" He asked
"You're at the hospital, how do you feel?"
He sat up and moved his body a bit before answering...
"I feel like i got hit on the head with a hammer a couple of times, and um... I'm cold, like really cold, and what is this?" He said referring to the headphones
"Your ears are sensitive right now, you need those or you could die"
"You're joking, right?"
"Nope, don't take it off"
"And as for your temperature, yeah your temperatures dropping really fast, it's in the twenties now" Michelle said
"What does that mean?" Jacob asked
"I don't know" She said
His temperature kept dropping till it got to the negatives, nobody knew what was going on but bits of ice started to encase things around Michael.
"Michael whatever you're doing, stop it"
"I-I can't, it's so cold" The ice kept spreading and the temperature kept dropping with no way to contain it
"Wait, I have an idea" Cal' said, "This qualifies as a superpower right? How about you try to imagine something else, like right now the only thing you're thinking of i how cold it is, how about you change that and instead think about how hot it is?"
"The hell are you talking about- That actually makes sense. If i could just control this..." Michael said trailing off. He started whispering something to himself. Slowly, the ice started melting, actually it couldn't be called 'melting' considering the fact it just turned into dust.
The temperature quickly returned back to normal, the room was covered in what seemed to be snow, but everything was alright now.
"Okay, now that everything is alright, and you're fine, there's nothing wrong so... clean this up, we'll be waiting for you" Michelle said stepping out
"What?"
"Good luck"
20 minutes later...
"I'm done" Michael said walking out of the room, "You guys could've helped you know?"
"It's your mess, why should we clean it? And besides we needed the rest, you gave us a fright you know?" Sally said
"My apologies, your highness, I'll keep that in mind the next time i come so close to death" He said sarcastically
"Hey, aren't you guys done yet?" Michelle said from the door
"We are, we were just about to come out" Sally said walking to the door
"We?" Michael asked
"Can we just go please? I'm exhausted" Cal' suddenly said from the door, cutting the brewing tension
"You're exhausted? You didn't do anything, you guys just sat here on your phones while I did all the work" Michael said
"Okay, get your asses in the car, it's late, you can continue your little banter tomorrow. Oh and by the way, Michael you're not going to school tomorrow" Michelle said
"Why? I'm fine, you said I was fine"
"Yeah, you are but, you still need to stay home for a bit, we had no idea what triggered you at school today, or what the hell is even going on in your body, hell you have powers now. You're not going to school tomorrow, you could hurt yourself or somebody else" She explained
"I controlled it well though" Michael said
"Michael, can we not?"
"Fine, you guys have fun tomorrow" He said turning them and walking out
"Thank you. Now, Sheriff Jacob will drop you guys off at your homes. Why haven't your parents called yet? It's almost 10pm?" She asked addressing Sally and Gwen
"Nah, they don't really care" Sally shrugged
"Oh, why?" Michelle asked
"I don't know, don't care either" She replied
"Well, I forgot my phone at school, so…" Gwen said quietly
"Oh my God, your parents must be worried sick"
"I just got a missing persons report for a Gwendolyn Johnson? I believe that would be you" Jacob said walking towards them "Come on, let's get you home"
"Okay, good night everyone, Cal' come on"
"Good night"
They got in the cars and started moving, a few minutes into the ride and something caught their attention
"What is that?" Michael asked looking out the window
"Holy shit, what the hell is that?" Sally said
"What's what?" Jacob asked
"That, you can't see it?"
"Kids, I don't see anything out there, just trees"
Sally and Michael made eye contact at this very moment, a silent agreement to check it out later.
