The morning mist still clung to the courtyard when Theo spotted a figure ascending the final steps of the thousand-step staircase.
She moved with deliberate grace, the hem of her black robe swaying with each step. A golden crest shaped like a blooming lily was embroidered at her chest. Even at a distance, Theo noticed the way the fabric clung to her curves, hinting at the body beneath.
When she reached the courtyard, he saw her clearly. Silver hair spilled over her shoulders like liquid moonlight. Her face was dangerously beautiful highlighted by a set of bright blue eyes. The cut of her robe was modest, yet it could not disguise the fullness of her bust or the narrowness of her waist.
Theo bowed. "Welcome to Cloudpetal Shrine."
Her gaze lingered on him before she spoke, "And who might you be?"
"I am Theo, attendant to Lady Yue."
Her eyes swept over him in return. His simple robes, straight posture, calm expression. A faint smile touched her lips, as though she liked what she saw.
"I am Seraphine of House Virelia," she said, resting her hands lightly before her. "I hope my arrival is not inconvenient."
"Not at all," Theo replied. "Allow me to bring you to Lady Yue."
He led her across the courtyard. Gravel crunched softly underfoot, and the faint scent of incense drifted through the air.
Lady Yue awaited them at the inner hall, her white robes flowing like mist, black hair cascading down her back.
Seraphine stopped at the entrance and bowed deeply. "I came to the Serene Jade Empire for my academy mission. While here, I wished to pay my respects to the Heavenly Maiden on behalf of my family."
Yue's smile was gentle. "You are far from home, yet you made the climb. Your respect is received."
Theo stepped aside as Yue gestured for Seraphine to rise.
"You may rest here for a time," Yue said.
"I am grateful for your generosity," Seraphine replied. "May I stay until the festival?"
"It's rare for us to have guests. You are welcomed to stay."
Inside, Theo poured tea for them. Seraphine's eyes followed the movement of his hands, her expression unreadable but attentive.
When the tea was done, Yue instructed him to prepare a guest room.
As they walked, Seraphine let her gaze roam over the polished beams and sliding doors.
"This place is more peaceful than I imagined."
"Lady Yue values its quiet," Theo said.
"And you?" she asked, her tone soft but edged with something warmer.
"I like quiet too."
A small smile curved her lips. When they reached her room, Theo slid the door open for her.
"I hope it will be to your liking," he said.
She stepped inside, her sleeve brushing his arm as she passed. "It will be," she murmured.
Theo bowed and turned away, unaware of her eyes on him.
What a beautiful man, she thought, her lips parting slightly. I want to taste him.
