Ramiel opened his eyes. Everything around him was thick with fog. He sat up, blinking, and realized he was in a dense, overgrown forest, bushy and filthy.
"Eww, what happened to me?" he muttered, trying to piece together his memories.
Then it hit him. "Right, I was about to enter the shaft when something held
me…"
"You're awake?" a soft voice interrupted.
Ramiel turned toward the sound and saw a little girl's ghost hovering nearby.
"Who are you?" he asked cautiously.
"Just a ghost," she replied simply.
"What do you want from me?" he pressed.
"Nothing. I helped you when you took that step. Poison on the ground seeped into your body, but I saved you."
Ramiel frowned. "No wonder I feel weak."
"Why did you save me?" he asked, curious.
"I don't know. I just felt like helping," the ghost said with a faint smile.
"What do you want?"
"Nothing. I just want to accompany you inside. My true body lies within the shaft. I need to return to it to be alive."
