Chapter 5 - Shy competence

Jane leaned back slightly in her chair, watching him carefully. He was nervous—no doubt about it—but there was something almost… endearing in the way he fidgeted with his pen before answering.

"Tell me about your experience managing multiple projects," she asked, her tone precise but curious.

He cleared his throat. "W-well… in my previous role, I coordinated schedules, handled communications, and ensured deadlines were... um, met efficiently. I… I also implemented a system to track progress more accurately…" His words stumbled out, hesitant, yet each sentence was structured, precise, and professional.

Jane raised an eyebrow. Efficient. Even nervous, he's competent.

He hit a stack of papers place on the desk unintentionally, making them nearly fall from the table, but he caught them just in time, cheeks reddening. "Sorry," he muttered, voice barely above a whisper.

Charming, but why… Jane thought, shaking her head at herself. She had no time for distractions, yet here she was, noticing the curve of his jaw, the subtle nervous tick in his hands, and the way his eyes avoided hers when he was flustered.

"Impressive," she said finally, leaning forward. "You handle pressure well, despite… your nervousness."

He looked up, eyes meeting hers for the first time since he entered. A small, uncertain smile appeared. "Thank you, Ms. Jane. I...I try my best."

Jane couldn't help it. She smiled too, a dangerous glint in her brown eyes. She doesn't appreciate fun in an office. But there's no harm in teasing him a little.
