Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Exposure

The following days blurred together like silk slipping through fingers. Ethan stayed. Vanessa let him. Their world became something private—separate from the judgment of society, from the sharp labels of right and wrong.

She took him to events, dressed him in tailored suits, introduced him to people as her "companion." But never as her nephew. That truth remained their secret, wrapped in layers of glances, long touches, and forbidden nights.

Still, Ethan knew this couldn't last.

And it didn't.

It was a charity gala—mid-June, champagne glistening, chandeliers gleaming—that cracked the illusion.

He stood beside Vanessa, her arm resting gently in his, when a woman approached.

Tall. Elegant. Older. With familiar green eyes.

"Vanessa Whitmore," she said with a too-tight smile. "And Ethan... Crawford, is it? Your sister's boy?"

Vanessa's fingers stiffened against Ethan's arm.

"Caroline," Vanessa replied curtly. "How charming of you to appear."

Caroline's smile sharpened. "I thought you disapproved of family gatherings. Yet here you are, so... affectionate with your ex-nephew."

Ethan flushed. Vanessa said nothing.

"I suppose we all find comfort where we can," Caroline added, turning with a parting glance. "Even if it's in the wrong bed."

Later, back at the penthouse, Ethan paced.

"Who was that?"

"My former business partner," Vanessa said coldly. "And my ex-lover."

"She knows."

"She suspects."

"What happens now?"

Vanessa poured a drink. "Now? We live. Until someone makes us stop."

Ethan crossed the room and took the glass from her hand.

"I don't want to keep hiding. This isn't just sex anymore."

"No," she said quietly. "It's not."

"I want to be with you. All of you."

Her eyes searched his face, uncertain for the first time.

"You'd risk everything?"

"You are everything."

She stepped closer. "Even if the world turns on us?"

He touched her cheek. "Then we build our own world."

She kissed him—deep, slow, reverent. And this time, there was no power game. No surrender. Just two people holding on to something neither of them had ever had:

Belonging.
