Chapter 13 - Echos beneath the moon II

The arena fell silent.

A ripple of sword intent swept through the courtyard, sharp enough to make the air tremble. Disciples instinctively stepped back. Elders narrowed their eyes.

Shen Kai had arrived.

He was tall, lean, and dressed in the deep blue robes of the Eastern Sword Pavilion — a sect feared for its precision, discipline, and brutal dueling culture. His blade, _Silent Edge_, hung across his back like a sleeping predator. His eyes were cold, calculating, and utterly still.

Shen Kai was known across the Eastern Territories as a prodigy who had never lost a duel. Not because he was the strongest — but because he was the most efficient. He studied his opponents like puzzles, broke them down piece by piece, and struck only when the outcome was certain.

He didn't bow.

He didn't ask permission.

He simply pointed the blade at Zhen Ruhan.

"You passed the Trial of Moonlight. You fought without element. You moved like mist and struck like memory. I want to know what you are."

Ruhan didn't flinch.

"I'm not here to prove anything."

Shen Kai smiled coldly.

"Then you're in the wrong world."

Elder Qian stepped forward, his voice sharp.

"This is Moonflow Temple. You have no authority here."

Shen Kai didn't look at him.

"I'm not here for your approval. I'm here for truth."

Lan Xiyue's gaze flicked between the two men. Her seal pulsed again, stronger this time. She felt it — the tension in the air, the way time seemed to hesitate, the way Ruhan's presence bent the flow of qi around him.

She stepped forward.

"This is not the place."

Shen Kai's eyes narrowed.

"Then name one."

Before anyone could respond, a ripple spread across the arena.

A group of cultivators entered — robes of green and gold, bearing the crest of the Azure Dragon Sect.

The crowd murmured.

Elder Qian of Moonflow Temple stiffened.

"You weren't invited."

The lead cultivator, a man with a scar across his jaw, stepped forward.

"We don't need invitations to clean up our own mess."

His eyes locked onto Ruhan.

"You left our sect without notice. You took our resources. You passed our trial. And then you vanished."

Ruhan's jaw tightened.

"I never belonged to you."

The man's aura flared.

"You belonged the moment you accepted our qi."

Lan Xiyue stepped between them.

"He's under Moonflow protection now."

The Azure Dragon cultivator sneered.

"Then Moonflow protects thieves."

Shen Kai raised his sword.

"Let him speak. Or let him fight."

Ruhan looked at them — Shen Kai, the Azure Dragon envoy, the elders, the disciples, Lan Xiyue.

He felt the pressure mounting.

The system pulsed behind his eyes.

He exhaled slowly.

"I didn't come here to fight."

Shen Kai stepped closer.

"Then kneel."

Ruhan's eyes darkened.

"No."

The sword moved.

Fast. Precise. Lethal.

Ruhan activated Moment Step, vanishing mid-motion and reappearing behind Shen Kai. He didn't strike. He didn't speak.

He simply stood.

The crowd gasped.

Shen Kai turned slowly.

"You're fast."

Ruhan's voice was quiet.

"I'm inevitable."

Lan Xiyue's seal flared violently.

The Moon Serpent, sleeping in the garden, stirred.

The courtyard was no longer a place of trial—it had become a battlefield of words.

Elder Qian of Moonflow Temple stood tall, his robes shimmering with spiritual threads, but his expression was tight with restraint. Across from him, Elder Han of the Azure Dragon Sect radiated fury barely contained behind a mask of formality.

"We are not here to threaten," Han said, voice sharp. "We are here to reclaim what was taken."

Lan Xiyue stood between them, her presence calm but commanding. "Zhen Ruhan is not a possession. He is a cultivator who passed your trial and chose his path."

Han's eyes narrowed. "He vanished without notice. He accessed our archives, our resources, and left without permission. That is theft."

Ruhan remained silent, standing just behind Lan Xiyue. His aura was masked, but the tension in his body was clear. He hadn't expected the sect to pursue him so quickly—or so publicly.

Shen Kai leaned against a pillar, watching the exchange with quiet amusement. "Seems the boy's made quite the impression."

Elder Qian turned to Han. "You have no jurisdiction here. Moonflow Temple is neutral. We do not answer to your pride."

Han's qi flared. "Then perhaps we'll see how neutral you remain when your disciples start disappearing."

Lan Xiyue stepped forward. "Enough."

Her celestial seal pulsed, casting a faint glow across the courtyard. The Moon Serpent, now fully awake, slithered into view from the garden's edge, its eyes locked onto Ruhan.

Han hesitated.

The serpent's presence was not just symbolic—it was sacred. To threaten someone under its gaze was to challenge the temple's legacy.

Ruhan finally spoke.

"I didn't steal from you. I didn't betray you. I left because I had to."

Han's voice was cold. "Then you'll explain that to the sect tribunal."

Shen Kai pushed off the pillar, stepping into the center of the courtyard.

"Or," he said, "you'll explain it to me. In a duel."

Lan Xiyue's eyes flashed. "This is not the time."

Shen Kai ignored her. "You hide behind borrowed robes and masked aura. But I've seen how you move. I've felt the distortion. You're not like us—and I want to know why."

Ruhan looked at him, then at Han, then at the elders of Moonflow Temple.

The system pulsed.

Ruhan exhaled.

"I won't duel for your curiosity."

Shen Kai's blade hummed. "Then I'll force it."

Before he could move, Lan Xiyue raised her flute.

A single note rang out—clear, sharp, and layered with moon qi.

The serpent hissed.

The wind stilled.

And Shen Kai paused.

Lan Xiyue's voice was quiet, but firm.

"If you strike him here, you strike the temple."

Shen Kai lowered his blade, but his eyes never left Ruhan.

Han turned to Elder Qian.

"This isn't over."

The Azure Dragon Sect withdrew, their robes trailing fury behind them.

Shen Kai lingered a moment longer, then vanished into the mist.

Ruhan stood in the silence that followed, the weight of the moment pressing against his chest.

Lan Xiyue turned to him.

"You've made enemies."

"I've always had them."

She studied him.

"Then you'll need allies."
