Chapter 28 - Meet the Family

"Don't be a sore loser. Do better next time," Yuno encouraged the young boy.

"Yes, brother Yuno," the young boy said, bowing his head.

"Come, let me introduce you to my parents," Yuno turned to Rye and waved him over. They walked to the courtyard.

There, an elderly man was stripping bamboo. Beside him was a woman who was using the bamboo strips to weave a basket.

Like the young boy, they had scales on their face.

"My son the second seat," the man said immediately he saw Yuno.

He got up and bowed to him. His mother on the other hand ran to hug him.

"We missed you, I thought I told you to visit more often," his mother scolded him.

"Mama Yuno, you should not talk to him like that. He is second seat," Yuno's father cautioned.

"He was my son long before he became second seat," she said and she examined him.

"They don't give him the respect he deserves up top. We should not let our respect be clouded by familiarity," his father explained.

Rye watched in silence.

'These people are more human than some. This was not something I expected to see in a dungeon,' Rye thought.

"Who is this?"

Yuno's mother walked to Rye.

"This is Rye Kappa, he is here to solve the murders. I was hoping he could stay here for a while," Yuno explained.

"Rye, are you starving?"

Yuno's mother asked and Rye shook his head. The young boy hugged Yuno from behind.

"This is my brother Yanko, and these are my parent Ego and Peg," Yuno said.

"Nice to meet you Rye you can call me Papa Yuno," Ego grabbed Rye's hand as he said.

They had dinner together and told stories of Yuno's childhood. After dinner, they went to bed.

Deep within the burrow it was difficult to tell night from day. People close to the edge of the pit were able to tell when a sun ray beamed down the opening.

The only way others could tell was with the beds in the forest. Somehow they always knew when it was day.

A huge flock flew out during the day and returned before it got dark.

Rye was shaken awake by Yuno.

'It's already morning?' Rye thought the moment he saw Yuno.

"We have to go we have a long day ahead of us," Yuno said all dressed up.

"Can I at least have breakfast?" Rye asked as he dozed off.

"Get ready. I'll wait for you at the gate," Yuno instructed and walked away.

When Yuno walked out the gate he saw his brother. He was with some other boys much older than him.

"Yanko!"

He walked over and grabbed him by the arm.

"What did I tell you?"

Yuno asked and dragged him away.

"The second seat thinks he is too good for us," a voice said from behind.

Yuno ignored him and kept walking.

"You think you are one of them? The toppers will chew you and spit you up," a young man dressed shabbily said.

Yuno stopped, "Robbing, killing, and terrorizing toppers is not going to solve anything," he yelled at the young man.

"You even talk like them now. You used to believe it made a difference," the young man said and walked away.

Other boys who were with him followed him.

"I told you to stay away from Scorpions," Yuno said as he shook Yanko.

Just then Rye walked out. Yanko ran past him into the house.
