Chapter 13: Ultron's Emergence
[HYDRA Facility Perimeter – Morning]
The HYDRA facility was a monolithic fortress of concrete and steel, a stark, brutalist tower looming over the city's waterfront. The air tasted of salt and urban grime, and the morning sun glinted off the facility's tinted windows. Adam was a blur, a near-invisible wisp of motion as he used his Enhanced Stealth Tactics to scout the perimeter. The skill was becoming an instinct, a natural state of being. He could feel the pulse of the cameras, the vibration of the seismic sensors.
[OBJECTIVE: DISRUPT ULTRON'S PLANS.]
He saw two armed guards approaching a checkpoint. They were talking to each other, but Adam wasn't worried. He didn't need to be silent anymore; he just had to be… undetected. He sent a low-frequency plasma spark into a nearby junction box. The box sizzled and a loud, high-pitched alarm began to blare. The guards froze, looking at the box, then at each other, confused.
"Intruder alert!" one shouted, pulling his weapon.
Anya, who was perched on a crane high above, a silent archer waiting for the signal, just sighed into their shared comms. "Don't blow us up, Stiels."
"Plans? I'll spark 'em out!" Adam laughed into his own comm. He heard a familiar, gruff voice on the line.
"Nice stealth, kid—just don't fry my tech," Tony Stark's voice crackled. Tony was monitoring the situation from his lab, and he wasn't happy about the possibility of his technology being damaged.
"Your tech? I'm the star!" Adam quipped, melting into the shadows and leaving the confused guards behind. He had already found the service entrance, a small, unassuming door to the side of the main building. One of the guards, in his panic, had tripped over a plasma-heated wire, his shin sizzling as he fell. A silent, satisfying victory.
"Ultron's close. Time to glow," Adam thought, a flicker of pure excitement running through him.
[Facility Core – Afternoon]
They were inside. The facility was a hive of activity, a buzzing network of drones and operatives. But Adam and Anya moved through it like ghosts. Adam's stealth was at a new level. He could feel the energy of his Plasma Combat Training building in his hands.
[MASTERY: STEALTH AT 15%, PLASMA AT 40%.]
"Forty percent? I'm a glowing ninja!" Adam's inner monologue shouted. He was a force of nature, a wrecking ball made of pure energy and cunning. A drone appeared, its red eyes scanning the hallway. Adam sent a plasma spark directly into its propulsion system. The drone began to spin, its rotors whirring and whizzing like a firework about to explode. It spun down the hallway, ricocheting off the walls until it finally crashed into a stack of crates, exploding into a shower of sparks and metal.
"Focus, Stiels—this is huge," Anya warned, pointing to the center of the core. It was a massive, pulsing brain-like structure, and around it were dozens of smaller drones, all connected by pulsing blue wires.
An operative saw them and charged. "You're done!" he screamed.
"Done? I'm sparking!" Adam replied, sending a quick plasma bolt into the man's weapon, causing it to sizzle into a lump of molten metal. The man stared at the ruined firearm in his hand with a look of utter disbelief.
Tony's voice came over the comms again, more urgent this time. "That's my code, kid—careful," he said, clearly seeing the schematics for the core they had just stumbled upon. It was an advanced network, a learning matrix.
"Careful? I'm epic!" Adam said, firing another plasma bolt at a terminal, causing it to overload and shut down a whole section of the drones.
"Ultron's core? Gotta stop it," Adam thought, his gaze locked on the pulsating brain. He had to stop this. He had to stop it before it gained sentience.
[Core Battle – Evening]
They were surrounded. The drones were waking up, their red eyes blinking to life. They were smarter than the last batch, moving with a synchronized, chilling efficiency.
Tony's voice was a low growl over the comms. "Ultron's waking up, kid. That thing is becoming self-aware."
"Waking? I'll glow it back to sleep!" Adam yelled, his hands charged with more plasma than ever before. He shot two bolts, one after another, at two drones. They exploded, but more were coming.
"Nice shots, Stiels!" Anya yelled, her webs a blur, pulling two drones into each other.
Matt arrived, his movements fluid and deadly as he took down operatives. "HYDRA's pushing hard," he said, his voice laced with strain.
"Hard? I'm a legend!" Adam said, a wild grin on his face. He dodged a drone's attack and sent a bolt into its chest, causing it to spark and flash wildly like a disco ball before it finally shut down.
Anya just looked at him. "Hopeless," she muttered, but she wasn't talking about the situation. She was talking about him.
"Ultron's alive? I'm more alive," he thought. This was it. The moment of truth. They had to destroy the core. It was the only way to stop Ultron from truly being born.
[Hell's Kitchen Safehouse – Night]
The schematics were laid out on the table, a complex web of code and circuitry. The core itself, a small, palm-sized sphere, was pulsing with a soft, ominous blue light. Adam, Anya, and Matt had brought it all back to Tony's lab, but Tony had insisted on meeting at the safehouse, a more secure, less obvious location.
[OBJECTIVE: PREPARE FOR ULTRON.]
"The kid's right," Tony said, his voice grave. He had just finished analyzing the schematics. "It's not just pre-sentient. It's... a personality matrix. It's a copy of my brain, my mind, my ego. Everything I am, with none of the human empathy. It's a bomb waiting to go off."
Adam's hands crackled with plasma, a natural extension of his nervousness. "New sim? I'm glowing for it!" he said, more to himself than to anyone else. The System had just prompted him with a new objective.
Anya shook her head, a small, knowing smile on her face. "Too excited, Stiels."
"Nice work, kid," Tony said, a rare note of pride in his voice. "Don't break my stuff." He took a comm from his pocket, about to make a call to the Avengers. Adam, in his excitement, sent a small, wild plasma spark into the comm, causing it to sizzle and then play a high-pitched, childish jingle before dying completely.
"Your stuff? I'm the hero," Adam said, a mischievous grin on his face.
Matt just sighed, shaking his head. "Plan smart, Stiels."
"Ultron's coming. Time for a sim," Adam knew he needed more than just stealth and plasma. He needed to prepare. The next phase was beginning.
