Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: The Bait and the Butcher

Rylan moved through the tall grass like a ghost, keeping low to avoid being silhouetted against the crimson-stained sky.

He reached the corpse of the Crimson Lotus Seeker. The body was a headless ruin, but the robe was intact. Rylan rifled through the pockets with efficient, bloody hands.

He found a spatial pouch—a rare item for a mere investigator—and the metal tracking rod the man had used. The rod was still vibrating, humming with a hungry resonance.

[Ding! Item Acquired: Blood-Dowsing Rod.] [Function: Tracks specific blood signatures over long distances.] [Current Lock: The "Blood-Beast" vaporized by your barrier.]

Rylan gripped the rod. It wasn't tracking the beast anymore; it was tracking the residue of the beast on the barrier. It was a homing beacon pointing straight at Oakhaven.

He snapped the rod in half. The vibration stopped.

He grabbed the corpse by the ankle and dragged it back toward the village gate. He didn't bring it inside. He left it in the center of the pile of rotting Jade Empire refugees.

"Master?" Lyra whispered from the gate, cracking it open just enough to let him slip through. "What are you doing?"

"Setting the table," Rylan said, wiping his hands on a rag. "When wolves find a dead pack member, they don't leave. They howl. And then they hunt."

He pushed past her, heading for the forge.

The forge was hotter than the rest of the village. Mei was there, stripping to her undershirt, her skin glistening with sweat and soot. She was surrounded by piles of raw Spirit Ore and the volatile chemical compounds Lyra had synthesized.

She wasn't building a wall. She was building canisters.

"Show me," Rylan ordered.

Mei jumped, nearly dropping a wrench. She gestured to a heavy iron cylinder resting on the anvil. It pulsed with a low, unstable green light.

"It's... a variation of a 'Core-Breaker' charge," Mei explained rapidly, her eyes darting to Rylan's face to gauge his reaction. "I took the raw Spirit Ore and crushed it into dust. I mixed it with Lyra's nitrate and bound it with a disruption rune. If you trigger this..."

"What happens?"

"It doesn't just explode with fire," Mei said, tapping the casing. "It creates a momentary vacuum of spiritual energy. It sucks in all the ambient Qi in a twenty-foot radius and then... inverts it."

"A spiritual implosion," Rylan mused. "Nasty."

"It will liquefy organs," Mei whispered. "It's a forbidden weapon in the Jade Empire. Too cruel even for them."

"Perfect," Rylan said. "How many?"

"Four. I ran out of casings."

"Plant them," Rylan commanded. "In the field of bodies. Under the corpses."

Mei recoiled. "Master? You want me to go out there?"

"The Seeker is dead," Rylan said. "But his team is coming. They will land to investigate his body. When they do, I want them standing on a graveyard that bites back."

Mei looked at the terrifying calmness in his eyes. She saw no hesitation, no revulsion. She realized that to him, the dead refugees were just terrain features.

"Yes, Master," she said quietly, picking up the heavy cylinders.

Rylan returned to the clinic. It was quiet.

Elara lay on the cot, staring at the ceiling. Her arms were wrapped in fresh linen, immobilized completely. Her face was pale, drained of blood by the exertion of the bow shot.

Rylan stood over her.

"Did you sleep?" he asked.

"No, Master," Elara whispered. "The pain... it throbs."

"Good," Rylan said. "Pain is a reminder that you are still alive."

He sat on the edge of the cot. The mattress dipped under his weight. He reached out and traced the line of her jaw with his thumb.

"You saved us today, Elara. That shot was impossible."

A faint flush of color returned to her cheeks. She leaned into his touch, desperate for approval. "I... I just became the wood, Master. Like you said."

"You are more than wood," Rylan murmured. "You are my instrument."

He leaned down and kissed her forehead. It wasn't a kiss of affection; it was a seal of ownership.

[Ding! Loyalty Reinforced.] [Elara's mental state is fracturing into pure devotion. She perceives her pain as a necessary sacrifice for your approval.]

Rylan pulled back. He didn't feel guilty. He felt efficient. A broken tool that loved its user was a dangerous thing, but a useful one.

"Rest now," Rylan ordered. "When you wake up, the noise will start."

Midnight.

Rylan, Lyra, and Mei lay prone on the flat roof of the watchtower. They were covered in dark blankets, invisible to the naked eye.

The field below was silent. The smell of rot drifted up on the wind.

"Are you sure they're coming?" Lyra whispered. She was clutching a detonator wire that ran down the side of the building and into the earth, connecting to Mei's buried charges.

"They are arrogant," Rylan replied, his eyes scanning the dark sky. "They lost a specialist. They won't send a scout this time. They will send a hammer."

Whump. Whump. Whump.

The sound was low, rhythmic. A displacement of air.

"There," Rylan pointed.

Three dark shapes descended from the clouds. They weren't flying on swords or artifacts. They were riding beasts—large, bat-like creatures with leathery wings and glowing red eyes. Blood-Drakes.

The mounts of the Crimson Lotus Elite.

The drakes circled the village once, sniffing the air. The barrier was dormant, set to low-power mode by Mei to avoid detection. To the drakes, Oakhaven looked like a sleeping, defenseless hamlet.

They landed in the field, right in the center of the refugee corpses.

Six figures dismounted. They wore heavy crimson armor, their faces covered by masks made of bone. They moved with military precision, forming a perimeter around the headless body of the Seeker.

One of them, clearly the leader, knelt by the Seeker's corpse. He touched the ground, his hand glowing red.

"He died here," the leader's voice drifted up, amplified by magic. "An arrow? From the tower?"

He stood up and turned toward the village. He pointed a gloved finger straight at Rylan's position.

"Burn it all."

The five other elites raised their hands. Fire began to gather in their palms.

"Lyra," Rylan said softly.

Lyra's hand was shaking on the detonator. These were elite cultivators. If the trap failed, they would storm the walls in seconds.

"Lyra!" Rylan hissed.

Lyra squeezed the trigger.

CLICK.

For a microsecond, sound vanished from the field. The air buckled inward, creating a visible distortion sphere around the six elites. The ambient spiritual energy was sucked into the vacuum.

The fire in their hands snuffed out.

Then, the inversion hit.

CRUMP.

It wasn't a fiery explosion. It was a concussive implosion. The earth heaved upward. The corpses of the refugees, the Seeker, and the soil itself were pulverized into a slurry of bone and mud.

The four elites closest to the center simply popped. Their armor crumpled inward as their bodies were liquefied by the pressure wave.

The two on the perimeter—the leader and one other—were blasted backward, their shields shattering. They slammed into the ground, skipping like stones across a pond.

The Blood-Drakes shrieked, launching themselves into the air, their wings tattered by the shockwave.

"Now!" Rylan roared, leaping from the roof.

He didn't take the stairs. He jumped twenty feet down, using his Wind Qi to cushion the landing.

He sprinted toward the gate. Mei threw the lever, and the heavy doors groaned open.

Rylan charged into the field, his sword drawn, his Imperial Aura flaring like a beacon in the night.

The Crimson Lotus leader was staggering to his feet. His bone mask was cracked, revealing a face burned by spiritual friction. He was disoriented, his Qi chaotic.

He saw Rylan coming—a demon in the dust.

"Ambush!" the leader screamed, trying to summon a blood shield.

But Rylan was already there.

He didn't use a technique. He used momentum. He drove his shoulder—his injured shoulder—into the leader's chest, tackling him to the ground.

The pain was blinding, but Rylan rode it. He pinned the leader's arms with his knees.

"Welcome to Oakhaven," Rylan snarled.

He drove his sword into the man's throat.

[Ding! Threat Neutralized: Crimson Lotus Elite Captain.] [Combat Rating: Brutal.]

The last elite was trying to crawl away, his legs broken.

Rylan stood up, ripping his sword free. He walked over to the crawling man.

The elite looked up, eyes wide with terror. "Who... who are you?"

Rylan looked at the devastation around him. The liquefied remains of his enemies. The desecrated bodies of the refugees. The smoke rising from the craters.

"I am the consequence," Rylan said.

He swung the sword.
