Chapter 4 - Mysterious Rank

"Son, you're home. I have missed you all this time, my child." Margret said as she clung Xavin in a warm embrace. The woman had a striking hair color, white eyes, and a graceful body. Xavin mother's hair was white—a hue so rare that upon seeing it, he would miss his father. The woman assumed something had gone wrong, but everything seemed to be just the same yet unfading.

Margret has not visited him for a long time and she expected to see some changes . She repeatedly inspected him to see any changes. She noticed he had grown taller and was looking more charming than before. She caressed his face and smiled. Xavin smiled also.

"Come on. Get inside; I prepared a nice dish. Lucky it's your favorite," Margret teased. Xavin smiled and carried his bags to his room. It was already clean. His mother had taken it upon herself to clean it every day. Xavin laughed at himself.

It was a wonder to see how the cold Xavin smiled as he was at home. His smile made him more charming and cute, but no one apart from his family had seen it. He hardly ever smiled or laughed; he had a good talent in controlling himself.

He offloaded his clothes and other belongings into his cupboard. Then he glanced at a necklace that his father had given to him before he died. It was a necklace made up of a demon, and the teeth served as an orb.

[NB: Orbs are special stones that radiate magic to interpret magic energy. Orbs were generally formed from demons and their counterparts. The Learner's Orb was forged from the scrotum of the Arcayan Chronicles.]

Xavin squeezed the necklace tightly before tears rolled down his cheek. He clenched it so tightly that for a moment, it could have broken. Margret stormed into the room to see her son shedding tears. She knew it was related to his father—Mr. Holder.

She walked closer to him and placed her hands on his hands. Xavin's eyes opened, and he saw his mother. He felt a bit embarrassed. Xavin only felt emotions toward his parents. He could never feel embarrassed to another person apart from his mother.

"Don't worry. I see a greater Holder in you. By the way, what was your rank?" Margret asked. Xavin looked at her. He knew she was going to be disappointed at him, but he could not reverse time. Besides, he was never really serious about the magic classes.

"Newbie." Xavin said shortly.

"Newbie?" Margret asked, perplexed. Xavin stared at her and noticed she was not angry but crying.

"How? What was your class and energy type?" she asked further. Xavin stared.

"Warlock... and I think I saw something like Death Order," Xavin said ignorantly.

"Then how did you become a Newbie? That is unheard of," Margret commented.

"Which job are you going to contract with such a contradictory result?" Margret asked, a bit shamed and confused.

Margret left Xavin's room and moved into the dining room to eat. Xavin had a quick shower came out to meet his mother, understanding. A dish of spaghetti and cream was brilliant at home. The woman was pouring all she had on comforting Xavin and engaging with him. This was his favorite dish; he seemed to have been missing it for years, and it made her happy.

Margret watched him eat. He seemed to have been missing it, she loved it, and it made her happy. She watched her son feel better here at home. The woman was not even able to tell.

"So, tell me, what about your friends?" Margret asked. His social life was the main reason Xavin was out of the house.

"I do not have any," he said bluntly. Margret stared at him, shocked. How could a young man go through school for five years without making even a friend. Not even a single acquaintance. She was mildly disappointed.

"You mean you have no friends?" Margret asked again, to be sure. Xavin nodded politely.

"Sigh That was the main objective of me sending you in the first place," Margret said.

"Mage Academies are to have much social activity," Margret commented.

Xavin said nothing. Oschetard's Mage Academy was a very social environment. The social life of the academy was high. Xavin only chose not to be entertained and socialized.

"What of the girls?" I mean, did you not see a beautiful girl to capture your heart?" Margret asked. She really struck Xavin real bad.

"No," Xavin said shortly. Margret dropped her fork and stared at Xavin, perplexed.

"Guess what a waste your features must be since you can't attract a girl," Margret said sadly. She wanted to marry early and now to see her grandson's children.

Actually, Xavin had captured the interest of every girl in the academy, but his inability to speak made it an impossible task to be asked. But at the same time, the girls crushed on him, and Xavin knew but felt indifferent about it.

"Son, you have to learn to socialize. That is the only thing that can keep you surviving in this world. Your father died as an introvert, but I don't wish the same for you," Margret explained, but Xavin kept on eating. Margret sighed in exhaustion.

"What about your class and energy type?" Margret asked, trying to switch the topic.

Xavin finished his food and gave a light hum.

"Normal," he said coldly. Margret stared at him.

"You know, we have the bloodline of the Nobles, but it is only a partial that is why it can't be detected easily," Margret said. "I expected a higher rank from you, but I understand you hold no interest in all these. But your energy type is really confusing. If you were to cast a spell, that would mean you dying since the energy of your spell is higher than your EXP. I advise you do not use your spells," Margret said.

"I know," Xavin replied. Margret had read so much about Magehood. She had endeavored herself to it after trying to find out why her brother, who was a Summoner, had a pause in his magic. This made her enthusiastic for more information about Mages.
