Chapter 9 - I will succeed in making you mine

"Let's not jump to conclusions. Maybe he is not dating the omega." Axel cautioned and Jace smiled faintly, appreciating his friend's attempts to make him feel better.

"I maybe jealous and I may want him as well but that's not enough to forgive him for what he did. The plan still stands. Lucian Hayes is a dead man." Jace's voice was made up and Axel grimaced slightly as he watched the Alpha walk up the stairs to his bedroom.

His best friend's resolve was quite terrifying and there was not much that Axel could do about it.

.....

Kyle had just arrived home and with a small smile, he fell into his bed and dialed Lucian's number.

A few seconds later, Kyle tried not to let heat rise to his cheeks once he had the alpha's deep and familiar voice on the other end of the line.

"Hello Lucian, I arrived at home safely." Kyle informed the alpha once they had exchanged causal greetings.

"That's good." Lucian answered and contemplated hanging up after a short silence on Kyle's end.

"Lucian, I hope it's not much to ask for but can we be.... friends. I enjoyed your company." Kyle crossed his fingers as he made the request.

He silently hoped that Lucian did not turn him down.

"Sure, let's be friends." Lucian's voice was calm once he figured that he had nothing to lose by letting himself be friends with the omega.

He wasn't cruel enough to turn down an offer of friendship from a decent enough person like Kyle.

Lucian just had to make sure that their relationship stayed strictly platonic.

"I honestly thought that you were going to turn me down." Kyle's surprised voice on the other end made Lucian's lips curl into a subtle smile.

"I was close to refusing your offer but that could have been unreasonable. It's not like you were asking me out on date." Lucian explained and Kyle's heart was crushed.

"You could have rejected me if I had asked you out on a second date?" Kyle asked, his voice light and playful in a way that contradicted the painful sting in his chest.

"Yes." Lucian's voice was certain and curt, leaving no room for his intentions to be misunderstood.

The alpha was clearly not looking for a romantic relationship with Kyle.

For a brief second, Kyle wondered why he was really subjecting himself to such disappointment.

If only he hadn't wanted Lucian so much, he could have already given up on pursuing the cold alpha.

Kyle forced an amused chuckle, glad that the Alpha couldn't see the hurt expression on his face.

"Well, I was not going to ask you out on a date anyway. Now that we are friends, I hope it won't be weird if I keep checking on you." Kyle tested the waters and his heartbeat was erratic from anticipation as he waited for Lucian's reply.

Lucian was relieved once his worries that Kyle wanted to be more than just friends with him were dispelled.

"It won't be weird." Lucian's voice was certain as he reassured the omega on the other end.

"Good. You are a nice person Lucian and I would like to get to know you better. Let's start with the simple questions. What's your favorite color?" Kyle asked, his disappointment slowly slipping away as it was replaced with genuine curiosity about his love interest.

He barely knew a thing about Lucian except that he was a mafia Lord and quite prominent in the business world as well.

Lucian was thoughtfully silent, not really having an answer to the question.

Things like colors seemed trivial and although he had a mild preference for black and grey, they were not his favorite colors.

The dark forest green shade of his mate's eyes flashed through his mind right before he gave Kyle an inconclusive reply and Lucian's ashen grey eyes light up.

He hadn't realized he really like the color of Jace's fierce eyes until he was questioned about his favorite color.

"My favorite color is.... green." A small smile danced on the corners of Lucian's lips.

"What's yours?" He asked politely and Kyle who had really hoped it could be blue was mildly disheartened.

"Brown. Particularly beige." Kyle refrained from being cheesy and admitting that he liked the ashen grey shade of Lucian's eyes.

Lucian was not good at asking casual questions so he remained quiet and waited for Kyle to say more.

"You must be tired after a long day so I will pause the questions for now. Goodnight Lucian." Kyle's voice was thoughtful as he tried to blink away the sleepy feeling that made his eyelids heavier.

His day had been both eventful and uneventful since he had successed in getting an inch closer to Lucian but the alpha clearly didn't want him in a romantic way.

Not yet anyway.

Kyle was still far from giving up as he waited for Lucian's reply.

"Goodnight Kyle." The alpha's deep voice warmed a specific part of his chest as Kyle reluctantly hung up and hugged a large pillow to his chest.

One day, I will succeed in making you mine Lucian.

Kyle murmured softly before he slowly drifted off to sleep.

.....

In a high end casino he owned, Lucian leisurely sat in a spacious couch, his legs crossed as he scrutinized the business man that sat opposite from him.

His ashen grey eyes were cold and his aura intimidating as he gestured for one of his men to close the door to the private lounge.

He was exhausted and wanted nothing more than to return to his house and relax but he needed to deal with the man before him whose body posture was alert like he was ready to bolt for his life.

The poor alpha was almost shaking in fear as he noticed that he had been left alone in a room with the feared and merciless mafia Lord.

Lucian's reputation for dealing with those who crossed him justified the man's reaction.

He didn't break bones and end lives like his father had done and although his approach to running his empire was a touch more refined, it was two times as brutal.
