A heavy silence filled the room as Emily met his gaze, her mind raced with thoughts of what would come next.
She wasn't about to let him break her. She had been broken before, her life at the Winter's had seen to that but she had learned how to gather the shattered pieces and keep walking.
Still, the road ahead was uncertain, and she had no idea how difficult this confrontation might become.
At least now, she would play this game smarter.
"Grandpa, this marriage only had two parties…I and Lucian. And if he thinks I am worthy of him, then I am."
"Don't push my buttons." He warned sternly. A cold chill crept up Emily's spine, but she held her breath, unwilling to give him the feeling of defeating her.
"I am not. But I just want to make it clear…the Sterling family shouldn't be so stuck on defining a marriage for a grown man as Lucian."
"If he's capable of handling the boardroom," she continued, "shouldn't he be capable of handling something as simple as choosing his own wife?"
