At Hun's palace, Malushahi and Rajula were reunited. But Vikhipal, consumed with jealousy, offered Malushahi a poisoned meal. In many tellings, the young prince died in Rajula's arms, their love immortalized in the ballads of Kumaon.
Yet, in gentler versions sung by wandering minstrels, the story does not end in death. They tell of Rajula and Malushahi fleeing together into the high mountains, hand in hand, their love defying kings and curses.
