Chapter 42 - Chapter : 42 : The Avengers Plan Is Exposed

"The Cosmic Cube… can another channel be opened from Terra?" The director's voice trembled ever so slightly, drawing the attention of the panel of experts seated around the massive conference table. They exchanged solemn looks, their expressions dark with the weight of uncertainty.

This might be the only device capable of opening portals to other worlds. The Cosmic Cube.

"The Cube from the Earth Era… it was last recorded on Terra," one scientist muttered.

"Is it still there now?" another questioned.

"Director," an advisor interjected firmly, "I recommend that the Federation immediately mobilize all resources to track down the Cube. It cannot remain unguarded."

The director gave a grave nod. It wasn't just the Cube they needed to recover, there was also the Scepter. Both artifacts held power beyond comprehension. If even a fragment of their mysteries could be uncovered, humanity might stand a chance.

[ The director was about to secure the Cube in a containment case when a commanding voice interrupted him. ]

[ Loki, clad in sleek Asgardian armor, strode forward, a sinister grin curling his lips. "Please… stay your hand. I'll be taking that." ]

[ "We don't need unnecessary conflict," the director warned. ]

[ "Conflict?" Loki's smirk deepened. "I've traveled across realms for this moment. I am Loki of Asgard, burdened with a glorious purpose." ]

[ Dr. Eric Selvig blinked in disbelief. "Loki? Thor's brother?" ]

[ "Brother?" The director's tone hardened. "Then surely you know there is no reason for hostility. "]

[Loki tilted his head arrogantly, his gaze sharp. "An ant and a boot do not quarrel… until the boot decides to step." ]

[ "You intend to trample us, then?" the director asked solemnly. ]

[ "Not trample," Loki replied smoothly, "enlighten. I bring good news, a vision of a world free of shackles." ]

[ "Free of what shackles?" the director pressed. ]

[ "Freedom itself," Loki sneered. "The lie of choice has poisoned your species. Remove it, and you will finally know… peace." ]

[ Loki raised the gleaming Scepter, its tip glowing with an eerie blue light. He leveled it at Selvig. In an instant, the scientist's pupils turned an unnatural black, his will erased. ]

[ From the shadows, Hawkeye stepped forward, bow drawn, his tone cold. "Sir, Commander Fury is stalling for time. This facility will collapse any second." ]

[ "Indeed," Selvig said in a flat voice. "The portal destabilization will bring this entire structure down within minutes. If we don't leave, we die here." ]

[ Without hesitation, Hawkeye fired an arrow, striking Fury squarely in the chest. Loki seized the Cube's case as the agents fell back, retreating into the chaos. ]

"Freedom is a lie?" someone gasped in disbelief as the broadcast played out.

"Loki's insane!"

"Thor has that for a brother?!"

"That Scepter… It's terrifying. Just one touch and you're a puppet!"

"If he manages to wield it unchecked, he could enslave the entire planet!"

"Director Fury… he's not dead, is he?!"

"And the Cube! Loki took the Cube!"

"He's building a world with no freedom… I've got a bad feeling about this."

"Loki's confidence is chilling."

"Wait, are we already living in the world he created?!"

"...If that's true, I swear I'll take it down myself!"

Elenora, still recovering from the sheer chaos of recent global events, froze as Loki's words echoed through the broadcast. Could it be… that he was speaking the truth she had longed to hear?

Her eyes glimmered with something between curiosity and dread as she fixed her gaze on Loki's image. The parallels between his rhetoric and her own ambitions were undeniable.

"The envoy has made his move," the director growled. "This is no longer speculation; the Chitauri are coming. We must prepare for invasion."

The words sent ripples of unease through the command center. Confirmation had arrived at last. The first massive bio-mechanical creature they captured, dubbed the "mechanical whale", was of Chitauri origin. And that was only their scout.

"Based on the Earth Era's archives, the devastation back then was catastrophic," one general muttered gravely.

Military leaders exchanged grim looks. Their arsenals, once thought formidable, felt woefully inadequate in the face of interstellar warfare.

"Nuclear weapons?" one officer proposed reluctantly.

"Even if Earth Era perfected them, nukes are a double-edged blade," another countered sharply. "Detonating them on our soil could devastate humanity as much as the enemy."

The room fell silent. The truth was evident. Such weapons would likely slaughter their own before saving anyone.

On the live broadcast, a running chat scrolled past: "What if Loki already reshaped our world? What if we're all living in his illusion?"

The experts chuckled nervously, but their laughter rang hollow. Could that possibility truly be dismissed?

"If Fury falls," one agent whispered, "S.H.I.E.L.D.'s last line of resistance crumbles with him."

But then relief swept the room, on-screen, Fury staggered to his feet, revealing a bulletproof vest under his jacket. He wasn't dead. Not yet.

[ Fury barked orders into his comms. "Hill, we've got a traitor. Barton's compromised. Move now!" ]

[ A firefight erupted, chaos spreading through the base. Loki and his forces retreated, detonations ripping the facility apart. ]

[ As a helicopter extracted Fury and his team, the massive underground structure imploded. Shockwaves rocked the aircraft, forcing evasive maneuvers as Loki's Scepter unleashed a devastating energy blast, sending the chopper spiraling. ]

[ Leaping clear of the wreckage, Fury clutched his radio. "Hill! Casualty report!" ]

[ "Too many buried. Unsure how many survivors," Hill's grim voice replied. ]

[ "Alert everyone. I want every hand searching for that Cube. Level Seven alert. This… is war." ]

[ "What's our next move, sir?" Colson asked. ]

[ Fury's expression hardened like steel. "We start the Avengers Initiative." ]

"The Avengers Initiative! He's serious!"

"Even aliens won't scare him off!"

"Fury's been planning this all along!"

"But how do you fight someone like Loki? That Scepter is unstoppable!"

"If only Rogers were alive… the super-soldier could turn the tide."

"Rogers fought during Howard Stark's era. No way he's still around."

"Forget that, look at this! Another live feed!"

[ The screen cut to a grimy factory. Inside, Natasha Romanoff, The Black Widow, sat bound to a chair, a gag tied around her mouth. Her captors sneered down at her. ]

[ "We didn't plan for this tonight, but you're going to tell us who you work for," their leader snarled, tipping her chair backward so she teetered over a ledge. ]

[ "Some legend you are," one thug mocked. "The infamous Black Widow… just a pretty face." ]

A phone rang suddenly, cutting through the tension. The leader frowned, answering cautiously.

[ "Your location is the 3rd floor of Building 14, Solensky Square," a calm voice announced. "We have an F-22 locked on your position. Hand her the phone, or we'll level the building." ]

[ Pale-faced, the man shoved the phone into Natasha's bound hands. ]

[ "We need you," came Colson's voice. ]

[ "I'm working," Natasha retorted dryly, muffled through the gag. ]

[ "Hawkeye's compromised. We need extraction now." ]

[ "Don't hang up," Natasha ordered coolly, kicking one captor squarely in the chest. ]

[ What followed was a blur of strikes and counters; bound or not, she dismantled the entire squad in seconds. The chair shattered as she flipped free, snatching her heels and the phone before striding out as if nothing had happened. ]

"She's insane!"

"Black Widow's a one-woman army!"

"That's what a real agent looks like."

"This is it! The war's about to start!"

"The Avengers Initiative… It's happening!"
