After a month of grueling training, Borin summoned them to his office. Greta, Cain, and Isolde were already there.
"We have a contract," Borin announced, unrolling a map of the city's merchant district. "Emporium Valerius. One of the largest textile importers in the city. For the past two weeks, their main warehouse has been plagued. Bolts of rare, pre-Shattering silk have been vanishing from sealed crates. The night guards are found in the morning, confused, with no memory of the last few hours."
"A Memory Denier," Ronan said immediately.
"Perhaps," Borin said, his eyes narrowed. "The client's report is vague. The Guardians of Balance have dismissed it as simple theft. Valerius is willing to pay the Iron Compact a handsome sum to solve the problem quietly." He looked around the room. "This will be your first field mission as a full team." He then looked directly at Liam and Ronan. "You two will be on point with Cain and Isolde for reconnaissance. Greta and I will provide tactical support. Do not engage. Your job is to observe and report. This is a test. Do not fail it."
The message was clear. This was their chance to prove they were more than just apprentices.
