Later that evening, Elena sat behind her desk at Valerie's place, her phone already dialing before she'd even made up her mind. The line barely rang once before Jay picked up.

"Jay," Elena began, the trace of amusement already threading her voice. "Quick question , where did you decide for your vacation?"

A pause. "My… what?"

"Your vacation," she repeated, leaning back in the chair with a faint smile. "You know, that thing people take when they've worked themselves half to death and start aging faster than they should?"

He huffed out a soft laugh. "I don't really have a place in mind. I'm not big on vacations."

Elena rolled her eyes, though he couldn't see it. "I heard France is good this time of year. Quiet, charming, good wine and nice views ."

I'm sure it is," Jay said, tone skeptical. "But I'd rather stay close. Just in case you need me "

"Jay." Her voice turned silk over steel. "You're going. End of discussion."
