Chapter 20 - Chapter 19: Shade’s Eyes in the Dark

Eastside's Uneasy Silence

At Eastside High, victories were supposed to be loud.Normally, after a raid, the halls would echo with laughter and the pounding of fists on lockers. But tonight, the corridors were quiet.

Those who had returned from the Ridgeview skirmish carried more than bruises — they carried embarrassment.

Crusher leaned against the rusted bleachers outside the gym, his massive arms crossed, a scowl carved into his face. His crew gathered around, whispering nervously, nursing their injuries.

One of them muttered, "We should've crushed them… they're Ridgeview, for crying out loud…"

Another snapped back, "Don't say that too loud. Crusher's pissed."

And he was. His pride burned hotter than his fists. Losing — even halfway — was something Eastside didn't do.

The Whisperer Emerges

From the shadows at the far end of the gym, footsteps echoed. Slow, deliberate.

Shade emerged.

He wasn't big. He wasn't intimidating in the usual sense. Thin-framed, messy-haired, wearing the same dull uniform as everyone else. But the way he moved — calm, steady, unbothered — made everyone stiffen.

Because when Shade appeared, something always followed.

"Crusher," Shade said quietly, his voice like a low hiss. "You lost."

Crusher's teeth ground together. "We didn't lose. It was a warm-up. My guys got sloppy, that's all. Next time—"

Shade cut him off with a faint smile that never reached his eyes. "Next time, sloppiness won't be excused. Ridgeview was supposed to crumble. Instead…" He turned his head slightly, as if listening to whispers only he could hear. "…they're laughing. They think they're strong."

The room tightened. No one dared interrupt.

Shade's Manipulation

He walked among the bruised students, his steps quiet but his words sharp.

"You let a nobody — a weakling named Gray — turn into their banner. Do you understand what you've created? A symbol."

Someone muttered, "He's just lucky. He's nothing."

Shade's eyes flicked toward the speaker, cold and piercing. The boy froze, unable to meet his gaze.

"Symbols don't need strength," Shade said softly. "They only need believers. And right now, Ridgeview has seventy, maybe more. Do you know how dangerous that is?"

Crusher snarled, slamming his fist into the bleachers with a deafening clang. "Then I'll crush the symbol. I'll tear this Gray apart in front of everyone."

Shade tilted his head, lips curling faintly. "You'll get your chance. But not yet. Crushing him too soon will make him a martyr. What we need…" He leaned closer, whispering as if weaving poison into the air, "…is despair. Let his followers taste defeat. Let them doubt. And when Gray can no longer carry them, when his so-called friends scatter…"

Shade's expression darkened. "…then you crush him. Publicly. Permanently."

Crusher's Reluctant Nod

Crusher hated it. He hated waiting, hated being told what to do by someone who couldn't even throw a proper punch. But even he couldn't ignore the logic. Shade always had a way of making brutal sense.

He finally gave a slow nod. "Fine. We'll wait. But when it's my turn, no one's stopping me."

Shade's smile widened, though it looked more like a shadow than joy. "Good. Patience will deliver Ridgeview into our hands."

The Seeds of Fear

As the Eastside crew dispersed, Shade lingered alone in the dim light. His eyes seemed distant, almost unfocused, as though he were watching invisible strings being pulled.

"Gray," he whispered to himself, voice barely audible. "You don't know it yet, but you're already dancing for me. The more they believe in you… the more satisfying it will be when you fall."

His smile thinned into something cruel. "And when you fall, Ridgeview falls with you."

Meanwhile at Ridgeview…

Across town, Gray sneezed loudly while trying to bandage a bruise on his knee. His little brother laughed. "What, did someone bad-mouth you?"

Gray groaned. "At this point, probably the whole city is bad-mouthing me…"

He didn't know how right he was.
