Chapter 2 - A Cliché Encounter

Chapter 2 – A Cliché Encounter

As Wang Lai left the mayor's office, he stretched lazily and yawned. But just as he was about to head home, he heard a voice muttering nearby.

"…just you wait, Chen family. Three years from now, I'll take my revenge…"

He turned, spotting a boy no older than fifteen, fists clenched, face pale with anger. The boy's voice trembled between grief and madness.

Wang Lai chuckled. "Ah, the classic revenge monologue. You're missing thunderclouds and dramatic background music, though."

The boy flinched and spun around. "O-Officer Wang?!"

"Yes, yes, the same lazy official everyone knows," Wang Lai said, waving casually. He studied the boy—thin, gaunt, aura fractured like broken glass. A cultivator who should have been a genius, yet whose path had been cut short.

"What's your name?"

"…Chen Mo."

"Oh ho, a Chen plotting to destroy the Chen family." Wang Lai grinned. "Very poetic. I like it. But tell me, Chen Mo—are you sure you can even kill a chicken in your state?"

Chen Mo's eyes hardened. He whispered into the air beside him, voice low.

"Master… he's just Officer Wang, a mortal everyone trusts. We can believe him, right?"

Wang Lai pretended not to notice the faint spiritual presence drifting at the boy's side. He even has a ghost master. Hah, this world really loves its clichés.

He smiled, his tone suddenly deep, almost magnetic.

"You must not have a place to stay. Why not come with me? Spend the night. If you want to leave tomorrow, you can. But if you stay…" Wang Lai's eyes gleamed. "I'll give you your revenge in less than six months."

Chen Mo's lips trembled. He glanced toward the invisible figure, then back at Wang Lai.

"…Alright. I'll come."

"Good boy," Wang Lai said with a lazy grin. He turned, hands tucked behind his back. "Now come along. Don't lag behind. The mosquitoes out here are vicious, you know."

Chen Mo followed quietly, his fate already twisting.

Cliffhanger:

As they disappeared down the street, the faint spiritual figure trailing Chen Mo frowned deeply. She whispered, unheard:

"…this mortal… what are you?"
