Chapter 9 - 9 A Sense of Noble Resolve

A tall woman walked past, handing the lead guard a black package. It was heavy, but I couldn't tell what it was.

Curious, I moved closer to take a look.

The woman turned her head and gave me a fierce glare. She looked like a younger, crueler version of Empress Dowager Cixi. Her eyes were like venomous snakes, so sharp that just one glance made my skin crawl.

I quickly retreated, returning to my original position.

The transport vehicles departed, and the guards took the prisoners to the inspection room, where every inmate had to undergo a body check to ensure they weren't bringing in dangerous items like knives or drugs.

Once they were done, Sister Kang called me over. As I approached, I noticed that the "Empress" was still eyeing me, her gaze cold and calculating. Then, with a metallic edge to her voice, she said, "Go check the inmates."

Check the inmates? But I'm a man.

Sister Kang spoke to her, "Warden, this is Xiao Zhang, the psychological counselor. He's a male."

The woman was none other than the prison warden—the highest authority here. No wonder she acted so high and mighty.

The warden's voice was sharp, "Go quickly!"

Her tone wasn't intentionally menacing, but it naturally had that effect.

I mumbled, "Okay…" and hurried off to the inspection room, unsure why she was angry at me.

I couldn't help but feel confused. I hadn't done anything wrong. Why was she so hostile?

It was clear that in this place, power was everything.
