Chapter 17 - I Liked You Better Before

Few days had passed sense Eris told Levi about everything, Levi then bought all books about Dragons and Dragon culture and learned about everything about Dragons.

Levi and Kyouya stood in the forest outside Axel, the wind moving the trees just enough to be annoying.

They stared at each other.

Kyouya spoke first.

"So. A goddess made you royalty?"

Levi nodded. "Yeah."

"You now have an older brother."

"Correct."

"He's a half-dragon."

"Yes."

"With a crow theme."

Levi sighed. "Unfortunately."

"And a fleet of airships is currently on the way to Axel."

"Yes."

Kyouya took a long, slow breath. The kind someone takes when deciding whether to scream or accept fate.

"…I liked you better when you were just a normal reincarnator."

Levi snorted. "Same."

They stood there in silence for a moment.

Then Kyouya frowned. "Wait. Doesn't that mean—"

"Yes," Levi said flatly. "I technically outrank the local nobility now."

Kyouya rubbed his temples. "This town can barely handle Aqua. It is not ready for royal politics."

Levi looked up at the sky. "Neither am I."

Back in Axel, chaos had already begun.

Rumors spread fast.

Too fast.

By the time Levi returned, people were whispering.

"Did you hear?"

"They say he's a dragon prince."

"I heard he owns the ocean."

"My cousin said he eats nobles."

Levi walked past the guild counter.

Luna froze when she saw him.

"…Why are people bowing?"

Levi leaned on the counter. "Short version? I have a brother, a crown I didn't ask for, and incoming airships."

Luna stared.

"…I need a raise."

Wiz was calm. Too calm.

She sipped her tea while Yunyun paced in circles.

"Airships?" Yunyun said. "Royal ones? From the sea?"

Wiz nodded. "That explains the strange mana fluctuations."

Levi dropped into a chair. "You're taking this way too well."

Wiz smiled softly. "Levi-san, I am a lich. I have watched kingdoms rise, fall, and accidentally explode."

She paused.

"Though… a crow-themed dragon prince is new."

Yunyun stopped pacing. "Does this mean you're leaving?"

Levi looked at her.

"…No."

That answer came fast. Too fast to be a lie.

"I didn't choose this. And I'm not letting some divine paperwork drag me away from Axel."

Wiz's smile widened just a little. "That's good."

Elsewhere in town—

Aqua was yelling.

"WHY DOES HE GET AIRSHIPS?!"

Kazuma stared at her. "You caused this."

"I DID NOT!"

"You literally admitted you didn't read his file."

Aqua pointed dramatically. "DETAILS!"

Kazuma sighed. "I knew picking you was a mistake."

Aqua gasped. "HOW DARE—"

The ground trembled.

Everyone froze.

A distant horn echoed through the sky.

Slow. Deep. Regal.

Levi stepped outside and looked up.

Far on the horizon—

Metal shapes cut through the clouds.

Airships.

He exhaled slowly.

"…I really liked my life better before gods started fixing their mistakes."

Everyone looked up.

The sky above Axel was no longer empty.

Airships—dozens of them—cut through the clouds in slow, deliberate lines. Each one carried the same flag: a serpent-like dragon, long and coiled, with branching tendrils flowing from its body.

A Leviathan.

The biblical kind.

The gate guards froze.

Adventurers stopped mid-argument.

Aqua squinted at the sky.

"…Is that your face?"

Levi did not look away. He gently picked up his slime.

"Yeah," he said calmly. "Here we go."

The largest airship descended directly before Axel's main gate. The wind alone nearly knocked people over as it settled into place.

The ramp lowered.

Silence followed.

Then—

Boing.

King Slime hopped down first, wobbling happily.

Everyone stared.

"…Why is there a king slime?" someone whispered.

Then the real presence stepped out.

He had the same blue eyes as Levi.

The same sharp gaze.

Black hair like a moonless night.

He wore royal attire trimmed in dark silver, a feathered cloak resting on his shoulders. A sword hung at his side—ornate, but clearly used.

[Insert image here]

He stopped a few steps from Levi.

And smiled.

"LEVI!"

Levi raised a hand casually.

"…Hi, Triton."

For a split second, the man's expression froze.

Then he laughed—low, genuine, relieved.

"Good. You do remember my name."

He stepped forward and pulled Levi into a one-armed hug that nearly crushed his ribs.

"Glad to see you're still alive, little brother."

Axel collectively broke.

"LITTLE BROTHER?"

"PRINCE?"

"WHY IS THE SLIME BOWING?"

Kazuma slowly turned to Aqua.

"…Did we accidentally join a royal civil war?"

Aqua nodded. "I hate it here."

---

Triton finally stepped back and looked Levi over from head to toe.

"…You look smaller."

Levi deadpanned. "You look louder."

Triton laughed again. "Still sharp. Good."

His eyes shifted, scanning the crowd.

"Interesting place you've chosen to disappear to."

Levi crossed his arms. "I didn't disappear. I relocated."

"To a frontier town."

"With low taxes."

"And exploding people."

Triton raised a brow. "Exploding—?"

A distant BOOM echoed.

Megumin waved from somewhere.

Triton paused. "…I see."

Wiz stepped forward, polite and calm.

"You must be Prince Triton of Atlantis."

Triton inclined his head. "And you must be the lich watching over my brother."

Wiz smiled. "More like keeping him from breaking reality."

Triton nodded approvingly. "A noble duty."

Yunyun peeked from behind Levi. "…S-so this means Levi-sama is really—"

Levi sighed. "Don't say it."

"A prince?"

"…Damn it."

Triton looked back at Levi, his tone shifting—less playful now.

"Father is worried."

Levi stiffened.

"The Oracle said you'd lost your memories. That you'd forgotten us."

Levi met his gaze. "I didn't forget. I just… chose my own life."

Silence stretched.

Then Triton smiled again, softer this time.

"…Figures. You always were like that."

He turned toward the ships.

"We're not here to drag you back. Not yet."

Levi blinked. "That was an option?"

"Oh, absolutely."

Kazuma fainted.

Triton looked back at Levi.

"But the sea is changing. And when it does… we'll need you."

Levi exhaled slowly.

"…Let me guess. World-ending stuff."

Triton smirked. "Of course."

Levi glanced at Axel. At his party. At the chaos.

"…Give me time."

Triton nodded. "You have it."

He turned, cloak fluttering.

"And Levi?"

Levi looked up.

"…Try not to cause an international incident before I leave."

Levi smirked.

"No promises."

Triton looked at Levi and held out a sealed letter.

"From Mother."

Levi took it, glanced at the familiar crest, and slipped it into his coat.

"I'll check it later."

Triton didn't comment. He just nodded, like he expected that answer.

The moment Triton stepped back, everything exploded.

"EXPLAIN. NOW."

Kazuma grabbed Levi by the shoulders and shook him. "YOU'RE A PRINCE?!"

Levi blinked. "Yes."

"OF WHAT?!"

"Atlantis."

Kazuma released him and stared into the distance.

"…I hate isekai protagonists."

Aqua gasped loudly. "WAIT—Atlantis?! That's a divine sea kingdom! That means I outrank you!"

Triton turned slowly toward her.

"…Who?"

Aqua pointed at herself proudly. "I'm Aqua. A goddess."

Triton stared.

Then he bowed—perfect posture, flawless form.

"Ah. A local deity."

Aqua puffed up. "See?! Respect!"

Triton straightened. "…Levi, why is this goddess drunk?"

Aqua: "HEY."

Levi: "Long story."

Megumin's eyes were shining.

"Royal airships… ancient symbols… a hidden prince living among commoners…"

She grabbed Levi's arm.

"LEVI. THIS IS PERFECT FOR AN EXPLOSION-FOCUSED SIDE STORY."

"No."

Darkness slammed a hand on her chest. "A royal bloodline… forbidden politics… tragic destiny…"

"No."

She leaned closer. "I volunteer to be your knight."

"Absolutely not."

Wiz approached politely, hands folded.

"So the Kingdom of Atlantis truly exists… and it's technologically advanced enough to build airships."

Triton smiled. "Magic, engineering, and a lot of stubborn sea spirits."

Wiz nodded in awe. "Fascinating…"

Yunyun hesitated, then bowed deeply.

"P-Please take care of Levi-sama!"

Triton blinked.

"…She's polite. I like her."

Yunyun almost cried.

Luna, the guild receptionist, finally stepped forward, her smile completely professional—too professional.

"So… Prince Levi."

Levi felt a chill.

"The guild would like to clarify whether your presence places Axel under foreign jurisdiction."

"…No."

"And whether the arrival of your airships constitutes a military action."

"…Also no."

"And whether the guild can expect funding."

Triton leaned in. "How much?"

Luna's smile sharpened. "Yes."

Later, after the chaos settled—

Levi stood with Triton near the gate, watching the town slowly return to normal.

"You're really staying here?" Triton asked.

"For now."

Triton glanced at the letter in Levi's coat.

"…Mother won't like that."

Levi smirked faintly. "She never does."

Triton laughed quietly.

"Still," he said, turning back toward the ships, "when the sea calls…"

Levi nodded. "…I'll answer."

Triton looked at Levi as he spoke.

"So, before I leave…"

His gaze shifted to Wiz, Yunyun, Megumin, Darkness, and Aqua.

"Who," he asked calmly, "are actually in your party?"

Levi pointed at Wiz and Yunyun without hesitation.

"They're my party members."

Wiz gave a polite smile and bowed slightly.

Yunyun straightened up, visibly proud.

Triton nodded. "Understood."

Then his eyes moved to the remaining three.

"What about them?"

Levi pointed over his shoulder.

"The idiot I'm managing," he said flatly, gesturing to Kazuma, "found them a few days before you arrived."

Kazuma immediately protested. "HEY—!"

Triton looked at Megumin, Darkness, and Aqua again.

"…So they're not yours."

Megumin crossed her arms. "We're a highly specialized elite party!"

Darkness struck a dramatic pose. "Bound by fate and mutual suffering!"

Aqua puffed out her chest. "And divine authority!"

Triton turned back to Levi.

"You attract… interesting disasters."

Levi sighed. "I know."

Triton nodded sympathetically. "Mother warned me about that."

Kazuma froze.

"…EVEN HIS MOM KNOWS?!"

Triton gave Levi one last look, half-amused, half-concerned.

"Try not to conquer the world before I get back."

"No promises."

Triton smiled—and with that, turned and walked back toward the airship.

Once Triton left and the airships vanished into the sky, Levi finally relaxed.

He reached into his coat and pulled out the letter.

Megumin's eyes lit up. "Oh! Let me read it!"

Levi immediately pushed her face away with two fingers.

"No. You're not reading a family letter, gremlin."

"HEY!"

"I'm only letting three people read this with me."

He paused.

"…Why did I say three?" Levi muttered to himself.

He looked up.

"Wiz. Yunyun."

Neither of them was surprised. Wiz nodded politely. Yunyun stood a little straighter.

Then Levi sighed.

"And Aqua."

The reactions were instant.

Aqua blinked. "Huh?"

Kazuma stared. "WHY HER?"

Megumin looked offended. "WHY NOT ME?!"

Levi pointed at Aqua.

"Because she's technically the reason this mess exists."

Aqua puffed up proudly. "See? Important!"

"That's not a compliment."

Levi turned and started walking.

"Come on. My place. Somewhere private, before this turns into a riot."

As the three followed him, Levi felt a knot in his stomach tighten.

Whatever was written in that letter…

It was about to make his life even worse.

The four of them stopped at the edge of the Axel River.

Levi didn't say anything. He just stepped forward.

The water began to rotate.

Slow at first. Then faster. A deep whirlpool formed, spiraling down into glowing blue light. Mana lines flared beneath the surface like runes activating.

Aqua gasped. "Ooooh! Is this a dungeon entrance?!"

"It's my front door," Levi said, stepping in.

Wiz followed calmly, already impressed. Yunyun hesitated for half a second before grabbing Levi's sleeve and jumping in.

The world twisted.

Then—

They emerged inside Levi's underwater mansion.

Crystal walls shimmered with soft blue light. Water pressed against invisible barriers like living glass. Mana conduits ran through the ceiling like veins. Outside, massive sea creatures drifted past, completely uninterested.

Aqua's jaw dropped.

"…Why does your place look like a final boss area?"

Wiz clasped her hands. "This is… ancient magic. Very old. And very expensive."

Yunyun whispered, "I've only seen places like this in legend books…"

Levi scratched his cheek. "Yeah, I own all of it. Surprise."

They moved into the living room.

Levi sat on the couch. Wiz took the seat to his left. Aqua plopped down on his right like she owned the place.

Yunyun hesitated—

"Sit," Levi said, gently pulling her down onto his lap.

She froze. Steam practically came off her head.

"O-OKAY."

Aqua squinted. "Hey, that's unfair."

"Read the room," Levi replied, already opening the letter.

The paper wasn't normal parchment.

It shimmered faintly, water-resistant, with a wax seal shaped like a coiled leviathan wrapped around a trident.

Levi broke the seal.

He cleared his throat.

---

"My dearest Levi,"

Levi winced.

"…She always starts like this."

---

"If you are reading this, then you are alive. Good. Your brother worried you were dead. I told him you were simply lost."

"You always were bad with directions."

Aqua snorted.

"Heh."

Levi continued.

---

"First: you are grounded."

Everyone paused.

"…I'm eighteen," Levi muttered.

---

"Second: Eris has been disciplined. Politely. Firmly. With paperwork."

Aqua leaned forward.

"Oh wow. She did mess up."

Levi exhaled slowly.

"…So she knows."

---

"Third: Atlantis is not a kingdom in the way surface nations understand it."

Levi's eyes narrowed slightly. Wiz leaned closer.

---

"Atlantis is a High-Level Sovereign Domain."

"In adventurer terms: a Level 20-locked region."

Yunyun gasped.

"Level twenty…?"

Levi swallowed.

---

"Only those of royal blood, dragon lineage, or divine clearance can enter freely."

"You, unfortunately, qualify for all three."

Aqua raised a finger.

"Hey! So do I!"

Levi didn't look at her.

"That explains so much."

---

"Atlantis operates on Ancient Rule Sets."

"No resurrection magic."

"No cheap revival items."

"Permanent consequences."

The room went quiet.

Even Aqua stopped smiling.

---

"Your class, Gunner/Mage, has been registered as a Hybrid Mythic Variant."

Wiz's eyes widened.

"That's… rare."

Levi nodded slowly.

---

"Your pet Slime has been reclassified as a Leviathan Familiar."

Aqua blinked.

"…Wait, the slime?"

From Levi's coat, the slime made a happy plop sound.

Yunyun stared.

"Your slime… outranks me?"

"Yes," Levi said flatly.

---

"Your luck stat concerns me."

Levi groaned.

"She noticed."

---

"Finally: Triton is not coming to retrieve you."

"He is coming to observe."

Levi's hand tightened on the letter.

---

"Because if you remain on the surface too long…"

"Atlantis will start to surface instead."

Silence.

The mana lights hummed softly.

Wiz spoke first, carefully.

"…That would destabilize multiple regions."

Yunyun nodded.

"It would create overlapping biomes… like a world event."

Aqua tilted her head.

"…That sounds bad."

Levi lowered the letter.

At the very bottom, in smaller handwriting, was one final line.

---

"Come home when you are ready, my son."

"Or don't."

"You were always stubborn."

---

Levi leaned back against the couch.

"…Yeah," he muttered. "That tracks."

Aqua stretched.

"Well! At least your mom sounds nice."

"She just declared my existence a late-game trigger," Levi replied.

Yunyun hugged his arm a little tighter.

"…You're not going to leave, right?"

Levi looked at the letter one last time.

Then folded it carefully.

"No," he said.

"Not yet."

Outside the mansion walls, far above, the world of Axel carried on—

Completely unaware it was living next to a Level 20 endgame zone that hadn't activated yet.

And Levi?

He sighed.

"I really liked being a nobody."

Levi flipped the letter over.

"…There's more."

The ink on the back shimmered, reacting to mana—written later, rushed, and very clearly added as an afterthought.

He read it out loud, flat and resigned.

---

"One last thing, my son."

"I hope you have found suitable mates."

---

Silence.

Aqua froze mid-breath.

Wiz's face went crimson, hands immediately folding in her lap, shoulders stiff.

Yunyun made a tiny strangled noise and buried her face against Levi's chest, ears practically steaming.

Levi didn't react.

Outwardly.

Inside his head:

…Yeah. I did.

Aqua recovered first, jabbing a finger at him.

"WAIT—mates?! As in plural?!"

Wiz whispered, voice shaking just a little,

"D-Dragons… they don't… they don't mean casual courtship, do they…?"

Yunyun, still pressed against him, squeaked,

"Is this… official dragon-law now…?"

Levi rubbed his face with one hand.

"Dragon culture is very direct," he said. "If you like someone and they can survive your life, that's basically a proposal."

Aqua's jaw dropped.

"THAT'S IT?!"

"Yes."

"That's not romance—that's a survival checklist!"

Wiz tried to stay composed.

"…Does that mean your family would… approve?"

Levi glanced at the letter again.

Then, without hesitation, he nodded.

"Yeah," he said. "They would."

Yunyun's grip tightened.

Aqua stared at him for a long moment, then crossed her arms, cheeks puffed out.

"…Hmph. Of course I'm on the list. I'm a goddess."

Levi smirked.

"You barely passed."

"HEY!"

Wiz let out a small, embarrassed laugh, trying to calm herself.

"…So this means… you're tied to Atlantis now?"

Levi leaned back into the couch, the weight of the letter settling in.

"Tied," he said, "but not owned."

He looked at the three of them.

"I chose Axel. I chose this party. I chose you."

The room went quiet again—but this time, warm.

Outside, the sea drifted peacefully.

Far above, fate shifted—just a little.

And somewhere in Atlantis, a dragon queen smiled, already knowing the answer.
