'The plague? Was the plague still around even though magic was available, was it that the poor couldn't afford treatment?' a million thoughts went through Remiels head. "How much did you and your husband usually make if I may ask?"
"Together we made about about a gold a week, a lot of the clothing sold for for a handful of coppers, and some of the dresses sold for a few for a few silver" she replied.
Remiel thought about it, 'Cross can you hear my thoughts'
[Affirmative, how may I help]
'How much is 1 gold a week, if you were to convert it to Earth standards.'
[About 100 USD, or 720 RMB]
'for a family, that's so little' Remiel couldn't help but feel sad and look at Marie he looked at her hands and saw how worn they are looked at the little girl trying to frantically pull her mother away so that she could see the magic show.
"Alright, are you good with people? or would you rather clean?" Remiel asked Marie, maybe it was dumb, but he kind of didn't want to let a single mom struggle out their if he could help it, and it's not like on Earth a working mom was anything weird. 'What can I offer her for salary Cross?'
[100 points a day for your first three employees, which is equivalent to 1 gold]
"I can do either, my husband was bad at talking to customers so I handled front of house a lot".
"Okay, I pay in guild points, but the payout is equivalent to 1 gold a day, so 7 gold a week, it comes with room and board, and their is staff breakfast and dinner. You may want to find a house later and that's okay, it will be a little cramped but you and your daughter can share a room, each room has a bathroom attached so their is a bath and such."
Marie looked completely shocked, the wages were too good to be true, and most houses didn't have a bath, and had to go to bathhouse. "Can I get paid daily instead of guild points? I don't really understand those" she asked scared that something must be wrong.
"Absolutely, I will show you how to cash out the points myself and you can take them out whenever you want, I'll have you be the receptionist, you can sit by the front desk for now and I'll teach you your job after I do some more interviews, you can keep an eye on your daughter and she can watch the movie. I mean enjoy the entertainment."
Remiel gave a welcome smile and held out his hand unsure of the hiring customs, she looked at him blanky for a moment, and he coughed, "Sorry, where I'm from we tend to shake hands when a deal has been made."
"Oh" she quickly reached out both her hands to shake his hands, unsure of the procedure, he sort of just gripped her hand and gave it a little shake, the little girl happy knowing that she'd get to see the magic screen again cheered pulling her mom as she awkwardly let go.
"Well Cross 1 down 2 go, not quite sure how to judge a cook here, I mean anyone could probably do it, especially if I train them with my recipes, maid seems like the easier pick, but how do I vet if they are a thief or not?"
[Guild can notify of theft inside guild domain, but not outside of it.]
"Well there is that at least, They're watching that fantasy movie about a kid wizard, so we got a good 2 hours. Lets try to get all these people interviewed and be ready for when the people of the town realize a giant building appeared in the dark."
Luckily for him or perhaps unluckily for him, when he went to find the next person to interview the group had grown slightly. There were now 4 men left to interview and 2 women one of which looked like she might be able to beat all the men in a fight. "Ladies and Gentlemen the Receptionist job has been filled, so their is only two staff jobs remaining. I'm in need of a cook and a maid still" Remiel wanted to make this a little faster so he asked outright "Do any of you have butchering experience or cooking experience" they all frowned besides the ladies. "What experience do you have?"
"I cooked for my family, so I'm fairly well versed"
"I can gut a fish, a deer, you name it I can gut it my dad was a hunter and taught me how"
The first one seemed ordinary, but the woman that looked overly rough was the second, she outright looked like the type that would be a hunter, or a barbarian, maybe a barbarian hunters, do they have barbarians here? I'll have to ask someone later he thought.
I'll interview the two of you, the rest of you, if you want go watch the movie, after the gates open and I get the staff settled in I will start signing adventurer jobs up. We'll find you work of some sort that's what adventurers do.
The first woman looked ordinary but honestly she kind of reminded him of a chubby nun, she even had a little scapular on like a nun, "I'm Melinda, I traveled here with my family I have a teenage son that's watching the moving picture out their and my husband is passed out drunk in the caravan",
Remiel told her about the room and board as well as the points, at first she seemed excited but realizing how cramped the room is she thought she's be better off living in town with the money she makes but is a bit worried about the gate closing. Realizing that it might be an issue as he hasn't even gone in the town yet. Remiel was left with a curt, "I'd like to see you back later if I can, I have a feeling we'll need more then 1 cook, and I definitely will need to ask in town about the gate closing." After giving her a smile and dismissing her he called in the next woman and before he could even say anything.
"I'm Trish, honestly I live near here and just came to see what all the noise was I was planning on selling some hide in town, but I heard jobs and I was like damn sign me up."
The bluntness kind of took him by surprise, but he started his spiel the moment he got to 100 points being a gold, she stopped him mid sentence and just shouted. "I'll do it, I'll cook, I'm not the best at it, but I can butcher whatever you send my way, and you can teach me to cook whatever."
Honestly he wasn't expecting them to know how to cook to begin with, and he was kind of scared what the cooking of this world was like, yeah he would try it, but if had access to the foods from earth, it would probably be better to teach them how to make some things he liked. "Alright your hired, I'd send you straight to the kitchen to serve breakfast, but I think I'll show you to your room first, you need a bath before you go in my kitchen."
