Chapter 10: The Climax of Iron and Wit
[Morning – Stark Lab Main Chamber – Day 3]
The air was thick with the scent of fear and the promise of death. Adam and Bixby were pinned against the wall, a dozen armed Hydra agents closing in on them. The cyborg, still pinned under the I-beam, was a testament to Adam's wit, but it was a small victory in a losing battle.
"Last chance," the Hydra agent said, his voice a cold whisper. "Drop the tech, and we'll let you go. We don't want to kill you. We just want to finish what we started."
"We're not giving you anything," Adam said, his voice defiant. He had to fight. He had to use everything he had. He had to use his power.
[SYSTEM: Warning: Mana output is at critical levels. Sustained use of high-level cards will cause Chronal Instability. Warning: System is at 90% overload. Proceed with caution.]
Adam ignored the warning. He had no choice. He pulled out a new card, a shimmering, translucent card that pulsed with a faint blue light. "Telekinesis Card." He focused his mind, a strange sensation of power and will flowing through him. He lifted a massive, rusted I-beam, a silent testament to his power. The Hydra agents, shocked, took a step back.
"This is too much power," Adam said, his voice a low growl. "I can feel the world pushing back."
He was a hurricane, a storm of power and will. He threw the I-beam at the Hydra agents, a silent, deadly projectile that slammed into the wall, sending a shower of sparks and dust flying. The agents, scattered and confused, returned fire. Bullets ricocheted off the walls, a symphony of destruction.
Bixby didn't hesitate. She ran, a blur of motion, towards a bank of monitors. She had an idea. A desperate, final gambit. She turned to look at Adam, her face a mask of determined resignation.
"I'm going to create a diversion," she yelled over the din of the gunfire. "I'm going to set off the alarms. They'll have to get out."
Adam's heart hammered in his chest. "No! It's too dangerous. I can't lose you."
"I'm not losing you either," she yelled back, a final, defiant smile on her face. "We're a team, remember? You're the chess master, I'm the distraction. You have to win."
She turned and began to smash the monitors, a frantic, desperate act that sent a shower of sparks and broken glass flying. The alarms blared, a piercing, deafening sound that made the entire lab tremble. The Hydra agents, disoriented, stopped firing. Adam didn't hesitate. He focused all his power, all his will, on the roof above the Hydra agents. He could feel the world pushing back, a silent, powerful force that was trying to stop him. He gritted his teeth and pushed. He had to win.
The roof gave way. A terrible, grinding crash echoed through the lab as the I-beams and concrete collapsed, a final, decisive move. Adam ran, not looking back. He had won. But the price was high. He had used too much power. He had pushed the System too far.
[SYSTEM: Warning: Chronal Instability Detected. Host has exceeded safety parameters. Warning: The System is now irreversibly altered. New directives will be issued.]
He ran out of the lab, the explosion a silent, fiery scream behind him. He didn't know if Bixby had made it. He had sacrificed her to save himself. He had won the game, but he had lost his partner. He collapsed in a heap, his body trembling, his mind a jumbled mess of panic and exhaustion.
He heard a voice. A small, defiant voice.
"You're an idiot, you know that?"
Bixby was standing over him, her face smudged with soot, a bleeding gash on her forehead. She was alive. She had made it. He let out a ragged sob of relief.
She knelt down beside him. "I'm not a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent anymore," she said, her voice a low murmur. "I'm a ghost. They'll come for me. They'll come for us both."
She had decided to go rogue. She had chosen him over her duty, her loyalty, her past. Adam looked at her, his eyes wide with a new kind of terror. He had won. But the game had just begun.
