Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: Cry Out in Despair

Chapter 61: Cry Out in Despair

The wind from the greatsword howled. In that moment, [Hunter]'s spirit and will were completely focused. He had never felt so powerful. He had spent almost all of his resources on the [Mountain-Crushing Blow] ability, but his stats had been too low to unleash its true power. Now, empowered by his new lineage, he could feel it. He was an anomaly among the [Paper]-tier. He was now confident he could even slay some of the weaker Reincarnators at the [Mortal]-tier.

The smile had not yet faded from Kaito Shirogane's face. He watched as Hunter, who had seemed to be in the depths of despair, suddenly exploded into action, his desperate sword strike cleverly creating a patch of shadow for him to attack from. The ingenuity of the move made Kaito want to applaud.

As expected, a man in a desperate situation can always unleash an extraordinary potential.

The rhythm of Kaito's breathing changed. He took a single step to the side.

BAM!

The greatsword, as wide as a man's palm, slammed into the ground where he had been standing, and a terrifying force erupted.

BOOM!

The ground shook violently, as if a monster were trying to shake the very foundations of the earth. The more powerful a fighter, the more they value precision. A small dodge would have allowed Kaito to counter-attack instantly, but Hunter's Mountain-Crushing Blow wasn't just a simple slash. Even if it missed, the force channeled into the ground was meant to stagger and unbalance his foe.

Though Kaito wasn't knocked over, the shockwave did make him sway.

In that moment, inside the wooden house, the Upper Rank demons all moved at once. Kaito was standing less than a meter from the house. For powerful demons like them, this was well within the range of close-quarters combat.

Kokushibo's hand went to his sword. Douma raised his fan. Aside from Akaza, who frowned and stepped back, unwilling to gang up on a single opponent, all the other Upper Ranks prepared to strike. Even Nakime looked up, her hand on her biwa. She just needed a single opening, and she could teleport this arrogant human directly into the Infinity Castle. Then, his fate would be entirely up to Lord Muzan's mood.

Suddenly, Kaito, who was staggering, lightly tapped his toe on the ground. As if he were a weightless feather, the minor tremor from the ground launched him high into the air.

Hunter, who was holding his greatsword and preparing for an upward swing, saw "Mercenary Tao" seemingly fly into the air. His expression changed. The next moment, he saw Kaito grab the flying door panel in mid-air.

Hunter closed his eyes, his face a mask of utter despair.

"It's not fair… agh!"

Nakime was even more shocked. She saw his eyes. He wasn't looking at the most powerful presence, Kokushibo. She was certain that this human's peripheral vision had been locked on her the entire time.

He… he knows about my ability!

A grin spread across Kaito's face. In the sunlight, the demons' senses were indeed weakened to their absolute limit. Not only was Nakime's Blood Demon Art unusable, but even their abnormal perception was suppressed.

In the air, Kaito swung the massive door panel. The muscles in his waist and back twisted, the sound of them grinding and stretching was clearly audible. And in that same instant, the violent pounding of a heartbeat began to echo from within his chest. The thought of what he was about to do sent a jolt of excitement through him, and his heart began to beat at an unprecedented rate.

At the same time, on the roof of a wooden building far away, Elizabeth looked through her optical binoculars, her pupils dilated.

"That… madman!"

BOOM!

The entire door panel, swung with a force of over a thousand pounds, moved with the fury of a hurricane. [Hunter], who was standing on the ground below, was suddenly exposed as the shadow from the door panel vanished. Sunlight poured down on him. He trembled, feeling death's approach. He looked up at the eccentric Reincarnator in the pink robe and, with his last ounce of strength, roared, "Mercenary Tao is a special Reincarnator!"

POP!

It was impossible to tell if he was annihilated by the Nexus or disintegrated by the sunlight. In an instant, Hunter exploded into a cloud of dust. Although Kaito had caused his death, the Nexus did not judge it as a special kill, as he had neither directly damaged nor controlled him.

But Kaito had no time to pay attention to such things. His muscles were swelling, his body so engorged with blood that his eyes seemed to be nothing but white.

CRACK!

The massive swing of the door panel created an effect like a sonic boom, which exploded outwards. Because Kaito had leaped so high, the Upper Ranks inside the house couldn't see what he was doing at first. They only heard the terrifying sonic boom. The next moment, Akaza's entire body trembled, his pupils shaking.

His [Technique Development - Destructive Death: Compass Needle] had already activated. An intense wave of killing intent and fighting spirit, so powerful it even surprised him, had just erupted from outside.

BAM!

A wave of incandescent white air exploded like a shockwave. The roof of the wooden house was instantly pulverized, as if a giant had swept a massive warhammer across it. Kaito, with the power of his fully unleashed [Absolute Territory], had used the giant door panel to smash the top of the house to pieces.

As wood splinters flew everywhere, sunlight naturally poured down through the now-open roof.

In that instant, Muzan Kibutsuji's entire body trembled. A sense of mortal danger that he hadn't felt since the death of that man suddenly washed over him.

I'm going to die. Here, I'm going to die!

In a fraction of a second, every cell in Muzan's body seemed to come alive. Countless faces appeared on his skin, and numerous fleshy tumors began to crawl out from his body. The elegant noble lady was gone. The man-eating demon, in the face of its own demise, had instantly revealed its true form.

Kokushibo, Douma, Akaza, Gyokko, Hantengu—the powerful Upper Ranks were all stunned.

From his position in the air, Kaito looked down at the panicked demons. He held a splintered fragment of the door in his hand and began to laugh, a wild, unrestrained sound.

"Hahahahaha… Muzan! Cry out in despair!"

Kaito flipped over in mid-air. His right hand flickered, seeming to disappear. The motion was an exact replica of the ninja's shuriken throw.

SPLAT!

Nakime's right hand and the biwa in her lap shattered at the same time.

Kaito, now swollen to a height of over two meters, spread his legs and descended from the sky, stomping down on the demons now exposed to the sun.

BOOM!

As Kaito landed, a ripple of Hamon appeared on both his hands. In that instant, everything seemed to move in slow motion.

Muzan's heart seemed to skip a beat. His face was a mask of sheer terror. The wisdom he had gained from his "revelation" seemed to vanish in an instant. Immense fear and rage completely overwhelmed his thoughts.

"Damn it, damn it, damn it!" he shrieked. "DAMN IT ALL!"

The searing pain of the sunlight was already upon him. He could feel death approaching.

Kaito's right palm drew back, twisting to an extreme degree, and a terrifying power erupted.

[Sage Art - Rakshasa's Palm]!

Kaito prepared to kill Muzan Kibutsuji with a single blow. As Muzan gasped, countless whip-like tentacles erupted from his body, but Kaito paid them no mind and thrust his palm forward.

[Destructive Death: Annihilation Style]!

A pattern of icy-blue snowflakes lit up on the ground. A figure with magenta-pink hair instantly appeared in front of Kaito, throwing a punch that collided directly with his Rakshasa's Palm.

BOOM!

A terrifying force exploded outwards. The blood vessels in Kaito's right arm began to burst. His expression changed. The one who had suddenly appeared before him was Akaza.

Because he had forcibly deployed his technique, Akaza was now exposed to the sun. The fine wood dust from the shattered roof could no longer shield him, and his body began to burn. But his fighting stance was still flawless.

As if he couldn't feel the pain, Akaza's eyes burned with a feverish intensity as he stared at Kaito.

"HA!"

A grin spread across Kaito's face. He stomped his foot, and his left hand, formed into a blade, shot forward.
