Chapter 152: Bloodline Refinement, a New Trait
Kaito confirmed his current inventory of Singularities: one A-rank, one B-rank, and one C-rank.
Considering that the A-rank Singularity had been generated from an event that had nearly wiped out an entire team, and that the Reincarnator who had used the Hadoken was clearly a powerhouse who had died in the process, he knew that A-rank Singularities were exceptionally rare.
This meant that the price for either [Refinement] or [Enlightenment] for his new constitution was terrifyingly high. As far as he knew, to wash away the [Weakness to Light] from a common demon lineage, even with the worst luck, would only cost about 4 C-rank Singularities. A single B-rank Singularity was already almost equivalent to the price of removing a fatal flaw. And yet, for his special constitution, a single attempt at an unknown result cost the same.
This lineage was an unimaginable money sink. Of course, the Nexus was fair. A high price inevitably meant a high effect. This constitution, which even the Goddess called "valuable," must have a powerful, hidden potential.
"One refinement."
The Goddess's eyes curved into crescent moons. She felt that this stingy, sharp-tongued Reincarnator had never looked so pleasant. She pointed a giant finger. Kaito's body involuntarily floated into the air. The next moment, a purple-gold light was extracted from his body. The Goddess opened her mouth, and the light vanished into it.
[You have lost 1 B-rank Singularity.]
The Goddess had an expression of pure satisfaction. Even in the talent-rich East Sector, a tribute of this level was exceedingly rare. She then looked at him, her eyes glowing, and Kaito instantly felt his blood begin to boil. It wasn't an illusion. A terrifying heat was truly rising from within his body. The smell of blood began to seep from his pores.
This was followed by an immense, agonizing pain—the feeling of his entire body being ironed from the inside out. The pain instantly caused Kaito's eyes to turn white as his muscles swelled. He instinctively activated his talent to mitigate the pain, but this only made his blood flow faster, evaporating even more rapidly.
A blood-red steam began to pour from his body. Finally, after waves of black smoke and a thick, grimy filth were expelled, the dark, bulging veins on his skin began to fade. His body had lost so much blood that his Hamon breathing technique automatically failed.
The Goddess watched this with a smile. She raised her right hand, and Kaito felt a limitless, pure life force drill into his body, replenishing what he had lost. It was completely different from the "positive energy" of Hamon; it was more like a pure, non-attribute life force. Soaking in it, Kaito felt as if every cell in his body was greedily breathing, absorbing the nourishment. His muscles began to revive, his blood vessels softened and grew stronger, his shattered bones healed, and a new layer of skin began to grow as the dead, burned layer peeled off in large sheets.
After washing away the filth, Kaito felt that the world had become clearer. He could even see the countless tiny particles floating in the air, glowing with a faint blue-white light.
"Those are spirit particles, you weak little Reincarnator. A rather nice form of energy," the Goddess said, her voice like a dream. "Created by living beings, and then reabsorbed by them. A beautiful, harmonious energy. Much less trouble for me than all those other scattered, evil forces…"
Perhaps this was the one advantage of a humanoid goddess over a giant ball of light. She was at least interactive.
Kaito only allowed himself to be distracted for a moment before his focus returned to his own body. He could now feel that, in addition to the rushing of his hot blood, there was another hidden, icy network, flowing quietly within him, containing the very essence of death. And within it, he could feel the faint, cold presence of souls, constantly struggling to break free.
[You have completed one Refinement. Effect: Excellent.]
[Underworld Erosion status has been weakened.]
[Spirit Curse status has been weakened.]
[Constitution and Spirit have been slightly restored.]
Kaito checked his status. The [Underworld Erosion] debuff to his Constitution had been reduced from -4 to a permanent -3. His Constitution was now at 20+ (19+3). The [Spirit Curse] had seen an even greater improvement, dropping from -4 to -2. His Spirit attribute was now at 19. Both were now approaching the limit break.
"Four attributes, all approaching the limit. That is… quite rare, little one. I will remember you," the Goddess said, though her words were meaningless to Kaito. She didn't bother to correct his disrespectful thoughts this time, simply waiting for him to spend more Singularities.
"One enlightenment."
[You have lost 1 B-rank Singularity.]
The Goddess pointed. Kaito was instantly lifted into the air, and the world around him vanished. He was back in that all-white world, on the banks of the River of the Underworld, surrounded by countless faceless spirits. But this time, unlike his first visit, his appearance was like an alien object. In an instant, every single spirit turned to look at him. A riot broke out in the river. Countless spirits surged toward him, all of them trying to possess the only living soul in this dead place and return to the world of the living.
Whoosh…
Kaito's body trembled, and he came to his senses. He was staring into the Goddess's giant face. Her ruby-like eyes, filled with countless intricate patterns, were shimmering with a mysterious glow. Seeing him awake, she just laughed and floated back up into the sky.
[You have completed an Enlightenment. Effect: Good.]
[You have acquired the new bloodline trait: Spirit Infusion (Scarce)]
[Spirit Infusion (Scarce): Your soul walks between the worlds of the living and the dead. You can now easily arouse spiritual bodies. You can also actively use this ability to randomly select one of the ten thousand spirits from your Underworld Pulse to infuse your body. Upon infusion, your Spirit will be eroded and tested. During this time, however, your attacks will also inflict a synchronous spiritual test on your enemies. Those who fail will be controlled by the spirit.]
Kaito frowned. It was a powerful trait, but it came with a great risk.
"What is it? Are you afraid of this trait? For the price of a Singularity, I can remove it for you~" the Goddess cooed, though she had already read Kaito's arrogant, confident thoughts.
Kaito's lips curled into a grin. He had been planning to use his last B-rank Singularity to upgrade his Reincarnator authority. But now, he suddenly remembered his [Secret Trove: Cursed Blood Origin] and the high probability that he could gather the materials for it in the next mission world. He needed to save that last B-rank for it.
He turned and left the Goddess's Sanctum.
The Goddess, who could read his mind, slowly descended from the sky. She watched his departing back, then looked up at the ever-changing clouds.
"So this is fate," she mused. "How interesting."
The delicate machinations of fate had designed everything. This Reincarnator had "coincidentally" obtained all the materials he needed, which had "coincidentally" made him decide not to upgrade his Authority, which in turn meant that he could still be tracked. And yet, before this, a series of other coincidences had made him completely untrackable.
"Is it clever, strong luck," she wondered, "or just the malicious prank of Lady Fate? I suppose we'll see… in the next world."
