Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Are You Not Greedy Enough?

Forty-one days remained until the destruction of the Ninja World. Hidden Rain Village was draped in a heavy, oppressive darkness, the kind that seemed to seep into the very bones of anyone who entered. Dense clouds blocked the sun, and fine rain fell endlessly, like tears mourning the unspoken tragedies of this isolated place.

Jiraiya moved silently through the deserted streets, his senses sharp, every step measured and deliberate. Though years had passed since he last walked these paths, the oppressive atmosphere felt unfamiliar—laden with an ominous tension that made his chest tighten. This time, his mission was no ordinary reconnaissance; he had come to investigate the mysterious Akatsuki Organization and the enigmatic figure at its core.

He could sense faint fluctuations of Chakra nearby, subtle and elusive, yet his instincts told him his presence had not gone unnoticed. His intuition was rarely wrong.

Deep within the cold, damp tower that loomed over the village, Nagato's Rinnegan slowly opened.

"Konan, Jiraiya Sensei has arrived," he said, his voice calm yet carrying the weight of inevitability.

Konan, standing silently beside him, trembled faintly. The name Jiraiya evoked memories of warmth, of a past filled with care and guidance—memories long buried under years of hardship and loss.

"Jiraiya Sensei…" she murmured softly, her eyes reflecting a complex mixture of nostalgia and melancholy.

Nagato was quiet for a long moment, his expression unreadable, before he finally spoke with measured certainty. "Go. Bring him here, Konan."

Jiraiya continued through the rain, each step bringing him closer to the towering structure at the heart of the village. His eyes narrowed as he sensed a familiar and unmistakable Chakra signature. White paper sheets, countless in number, drifted from the sky, fluttering and spinning with uncanny life. Slowly, they converged, forming a human shape before him.

Jiraiya's eyes widened. The figure was unmistakable: Konan, once a young girl under his tutelage, now grown into a beautiful yet cold young woman.

"Konan…" he breathed, awe mingling with unease.

Her expression remained unreadable, her voice emotionless as she said, "Jiraiya Sensei, Pain wants to see you."

"Pain?" Jiraiya repeated, surprised. But Konan did not give him a chance to question further. The paper wings behind her extended with a sudden grace, forming massive appendages that lifted her lightly into the air. "Follow me," she instructed.

Despite the absence of hostility, Jiraiya remained alert, aware that any misstep could lead to confrontation. He followed her silently, the rain blurring the world around them as the cold droplets beat against his face.

The tower loomed ahead, tall and forbidding, shrouded in a mist that blurred its edges. At its apex stood a solitary figure, radiating an aura that was both majestic and terrifying. Tendo Pain, controlled by Nagato, exuded a presence that demanded attention, an oppressive calm that made Jiraiya's chest tighten.

When Pain turned, his gaze met Jiraiya's, the Rinnegan in his eyes cold and unyielding. His voice was calm yet carried the weight of judgment. "Jiraiya Sensei, it has been a long time."

"What exactly do you want to do?" Jiraiya asked, his tone tense.

"The Ninja World… it is time for a complete change," Pain replied. "I wish to guide it toward the correct path using the Rinnegan."

Jiraiya's heart skipped a beat. Alarm and disbelief surged within him. "Are you Nagato or Yahiko?" he demanded, his voice low, solemn.

"I am Pain," came the measured reply.

The words struck like a challenge, a declaration of intent that seemed to span the entire Ninja World. Jiraiya's mind raced. Here stood a man—or perhaps an ideal—prepared to impose his will upon countless lives.

"You really think your power alone can challenge the entire world?" Jiraiya asked, his voice steady yet filled with skepticism.

Nagato shook his head faintly, calm and confident. "I am not alone, and I do not intend to conquer the world through force. I have methods… methods that will compel even the Five Great Nations to set aside arrogance and learn cooperation willingly."

Jiraiya's brow furrowed. His mind raced back to the intelligence he had gathered from Kakashi. "Isn't your method… to destroy the Ninja World? To make everyone experience suffering so they will learn?"

Nagato and Konan exchanged glances, a flicker of surprise crossing their faces. "Jiraiya Sensei… you misunderstand," Konan said softly. "We never intended to destroy the world. Our goal is to save it."

"Save?" Jiraiya echoed, astonished. He had prepared for battle, expecting confrontation, not dialogue.

"Yes," Nagato confirmed. "We aim to use Akatsuki as a central force to unite the great nations, guiding them to resist disaster and crisis together. Not through annihilation, but through unity and understanding."

Jiraiya's chest tightened, unease mixing with awe. The calm before him belied the scale of ambition, and yet, the sincerity in their words forced him to reconsider the meaning of their actions.

For a long moment, silence hung heavy between them, broken only by the relentless patter of rain.

Meanwhile, at the outskirts of Hidden Rain Village, Root operatives gathered in disciplined formation. Danzo, at the forefront, stared silently at a distant waterfall, lost in thought. Jiraiya… he had already reached the village and encountered that Rinnegan wielder.

Danzo closed his eyes briefly, and in a fleeting dream, memories of long ago surfaced. Shisui appeared before him, in heated argument with a young Uchiha Gen.

"You say I am greedy?" Shisui demanded.

Gen, calm and composed, let a hint of mockery curl his lips. "Giving too much… is a form of greed. Greed for kindness, greed for loyalty. Repaying too much… a craving for trust, an obsession with righteousness."

He chuckled softly, turning away, seemingly unconcerned by Shisui's words. "You claim to be selfless, Shisui… yet your actions betray an insatiable hunger for the benevolence of others. Are you not… greedy enough?"

The tension between them thickened, chilling the night air. Gen's words pierced deep, undermining long-held beliefs.

"You are a demon…" Shisui whispered, his composure shaken.

Danzo snapped back to reality, blinking as he saw Kakashi standing nearby.

"Lord Danzo," Kakashi said, his voice cautious but firm.

"Kakashi…" Danzo acknowledged, his mind still heavy with thought.

Kakashi had reached Hidden Rain ahead of schedule, and with his insight, he had uncovered critical truths about the Mangekyo Sharingan—the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. If used wisely, this knowledge could alter the balance of power dramatically.

Yet, as Danzo and Kakashi exchanged glances, a subtle shift passed between them, an unspoken understanding that the events unfolding in Hidden Rain were far more complex than either had anticipated. The shadows of ambition, trust, and betrayal intertwined, hinting at consequences that would ripple across the entire Ninja World.

The rain fell silently, relentless and indifferent, as if marking the calm before a storm the likes of which the world had never seen.

And in the heart of Hidden Rain, Jiraiya prepared himself for whatever revelations awaited him, unaware that the choices made in the past, by children and elders alike, were converging toward a destiny that none could evade.
