"Daphne," Finn called out, his tone different from his teasing just moments ago. "What are you going to wish for?"
They knew that the Emperor had already offered to exchange her freedom for a solution to the harem's infertility issues.
"I'll figure it out." she said softly.
Just then, a servant rushed into the room, out of breath and looking flustered. "A thousand pardons, my Lord," he said, bowing low. "An imperial messenger has arrived. He requests Rose Daphne's presence at the palace immediately. Order from the Emperor."
Lord Thomas rose, "Tell the messenger that my daughter needs time to prepare..."
"It's alright, Father," Daphne said gently, squeezing his hand. "I must go."
"But, my dear," Lady Elizabeth said, her voice trembling. "What if—"
"Nothing will happen, Mother," Aidan interjected, his voice firm and filled with a certainty that surprised everyone. "I've no doubt this is a matter of state, not of the heart."
