As they passed a large window overlooking the gardens, Alaric's eyes flickered to the side. Just as quickly as it moved, his gaze returned to the path ahead.
He had noticed one of the Empress's personal maids, standing just out of sight, pretending to be absorbed in the scenery. He gave no outward sign, his face remaining a perfect, unreadable mask.
He led her back through the long corridors, the sounds of their footsteps echoing in the quiet palace halls, until they reached the Emperor's study.
Without knocking, Alaric opened the door and gestured for Daphne to enter. She walked in, her head held high, and found the Emperor seated at his desk, a scroll in his hand.
"We have returned, Your Majesty," Alaric said, his voice formal.
The Emperor looked up, his gaze moving between the two of them. "And your report, Rose Daphne?"
